Adenosine to inosine (A to I) editing is mediated by adenosine deaminases acting on RNA (ADAR) enzymes. Inosines are interpreted as guanosines by the translational machinery. Consequently, A to I editing in mRNAs can lead to their recoding and the formation of proteins not encoded in the genome.

A-to-I RNA editing by ADARs is an abundant epitranscriptomic RNA-modification in metazoa. In mammals, Flna pre-mRNA harbours a single conserved A-to-I RNA editing site that introduces a Q-to-R amino acid change in Ig repeat 22 of the encoded protein. Previously, we showed that FLNA editing regulates smooth muscle contraction in the cardiovascular system and affects cardiac health.
