Natural o-benzopolysulfanes are often thought to exist as either the trisulfane or pentasulfane; the nomenclature has evolved around such notions. No study makes reference to the possible existence of natural o-benzoheptasulfanes. The work performed here indicates that a facile equilibration takes place between the tri-, penta-, and heptasulfanes (o-C(6)H(4)S(3), o-C(6)H(4)S(5), and o-C(6)H(4)S(7)) in solution.

Field samples are commonly used to estimate disease prevalence in wild populations. Our confidence in these estimates requires understanding the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic tests. We assessed the sensitivity of the most commonly used diagnostic tests for amphibian Ranavirus by infecting salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum; Amphibia, Caudata) with Ambystoma tigrinum virus (ATV) and then sampling euthanized animals (whole animal) and noneuthanized animals (tail clip) at five time intervals after exposure.

A low-energy pathway for pentathiepin racemization has been found using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. 3-[1,2,3,4,5]pentathiepin-6-yl-propylamine served as a model compound for tunicate-derived pentathiepins. Pentathiepin racemization becomes a low-energy process in the presence of a thiolate ion nucleophile.

A mechanism is proposed for the formation of cyclic 5,6,7,8,9-pentathiabenzocycloheptene-1,2-diol, 4, from the reaction of o-benzoquinone with reduced elemental sulfur, H2Sx. 1,6-conjugate addition to the quinone is favored over 1,4-conjugate addition. Hydrogen bonding to the quinone oxygen enhances the nucleophilicity of H2Sx by facilitating the removal of the S-H proton.

Atelognathus patagonicus is an endangered leptodactylid frog endemic to a small region in and around Laguna Blanca National Park in northern Patagonia, Argentina. All of the lakes and small ponds of the region (except Laguna Blanca itself) contain A. patagonicus and in all but one of these lakes the species shows clinical signs of a previously undiagnosed disease, the characteristics of which suggested a ranavirus.

Metallic glasses, now that many compositions can be made in bulk, are of interest for structural applications exploiting their yield stress and yield strain, which are exceptionally high for metallic materials. Their applicability is limited by their near-zero tensile ductility resulting from work-softening and shear localization. Even though metallic glasses can show extensive local plasticity, macroscopically they can effectively be brittle, and much current research is directed at improving their general plasticity.

Biacetyl reacts with oxone to give bis-dioxirane [3,3'-dimethyl-3,3'-bidioxirane, 3B] and mono-dioxirane [1-(3-methyl-dioxiran-3-yl)ethanone, 3A)]. Bis-dioxirane 3B is formed when two oxygens are incorporated into biacetyl, while mono-dioxirane 3A incorporated only one. A greater stability is observed in 3B compared to 3A, which is attributed to an alpha-dioxiranyl (anomeric) effect in the former.

Using field, molecular and histological methods, an epizootic, systemic disease causing death within wood frog Rana sylvatica tadpoles and leopard frog Rana pipiens metamorphs at 3 different locations within Southern Ontario, Canada, has been investigated. Our results demonstrated that the probable cause of this disease was a ranavirus. Affected amphibians were found to exhibit necrosis within the hematopoietic cells.

1,5-Dithiacyclooctane is shown to chemically react more efficiently and to remove singlet oxygen from solution more rapidly than either thiane or 1,4-dithiane. These unusual characteristics of the 1,5-dithiacyclooctane reaction were explored using ab initio quantum chemical methods. A large number of persulfoxides, thiadioxiranes, and hydroperoxy sulfonium ylides were located and their structures analyzed.

The efficiency of polysulfane product generation has been investigated for n-propyl thiol reactions with ortho- and para-substituted benzo-1,2-dithiolan-3-one 1-oxides in acetonitrile-water (7:3) mixtures. The reaction is facilitated by reducing the electron density at the para position or by placing substituents bearing lone pair electrons ortho to the dithiolanone-oxide (S1) reaction center. Through-space and through-bond effects both contribute to the conversion of polysulfane products.

We report cerium-based bulk metallic glasses with an exceptionally low glass transition temperature Tg, similar to or lower than that of many polymers. We demonstrate that, in near-boiling water, these materials can be repeatedly shaped, and can thus be regarded as metallic plastics. Their resistance to crystallization permits extended forming times above Tg and ensures an adequate lifetime at room temperature.

The insulin-like growth factor I receptor (IGF-IR) is a transmembrane tyrosine kinase that is essential to growth and development and also thought to provide a survival signal for the maintenance of the transformed phenotype. Effects of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the USA were investigated in 25 patients with obsessive compulsive disorder and 27 normal controls 4-6 months after the attacks. Participants completed a 15-item questionnaire to retrospectively assess changes in mood, cognition, behavior and somatic complaints since September 11, 2001. Overall, both patients with obsessive compulsive disorder and normal controls reported minor changes in mood, behavior and somatic complaints.

A literature survey and theoretical calculations have been applied to explore bilateral symmetry in natural product systems. Molecular bilateral symmetry is defined to include C(2) (sigma plane or axis), C(s)(), and C(2)(v)() point groups in molecules. Natural products that possess chirality in the form of C(2)-axes or sigma planes of symmetry are present in higher proportions (69%) compared to molecules bearing achiral C(s)() or C(2)(v)() point groups (14% and 16%, respectively).
