Constructing victimhood in Canadian news coverage of HIV criminalisation: Claims-making activities and HIV non-disclosure.

A robust body of research has documented the representational politics of news coverage in their depiction of HIV-positive people charged for HIV non-disclosure. News media representations of HIV-negative sex partners in cases of HIV non-disclosure have received far less scholarly attention. Adopting a social constructionist perspective, this article identifies how "victims" of HIV non-disclosure are constructed in news media.

B-1 B Cell-Derived Natural Antibodies against N-Acetyl-d-Glucosamine Suppress Autoimmune Diabetes Pathogenesis.

Environmental factors and host microbiota strongly influence type 1 diabetes (T1D) progression. We report that neonatal immunization with group A Streptococcus suppresses T1D development in NOD mice by promoting clonal expansion of N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (GlcNAc)-specific B-1 B cells that recognize pancreatic β cell-derived Ags bearing GlcNAc-containing posttranslational modifications. Early exposure to Lancefield group A cell-wall carbohydrate Ags increased production of GlcNAc-reactive serum Abs and enhanced localization of innate-like GlcNAc-specific B cells to pancreatic tissue during T1D pathogenesis.

Epitopes, paratopes, and other topes 30 years on: Understanding what we are talking about.

The question of which protein antigens, such as HLA class I or class II molecules, will bind, and how well, to a given antibody is often assumed to depend exclusively on the details of protein surface structure. These structures are usually based on static models resulting from X-ray crystallography. While these notions are useful, the ultimate causal factors determining how well a given antigen binds a given antibody are based in thermodynamics and can include atomic mobility and the time-varying conformations of proteins.

Pandemics and the English Language: Concepts Critical for Conversing About COVID-19.

We consider the multiple senses of several key terms that are used to discuss the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and clarify meanings of the corresponding concepts. Topics addressed include: 1) the meaning of immunity to an infectious agent in varying medical and scientific contexts, 2) the scientific factors that influenced the rapid generation and clinical implementation of safe and effective vaccines for COVID-19, 3) the difference between mutational abrogation of reactivity with B- or T-cell antigen receptors (immune escape) versus active interference with host immune mechanisms mediated by gene products encoded within the genome of the infectious agent (immune evasion), 4) the different ways by which the COVID-19 pandemic has "caused" deaths, and 5) briefly, the challenge of precisely defining the term .

Genes, Heritability, 'Race', and Intelligence: Misapprehensions and Implications.

The role of genetics in determining measured differences in mean IQ between putative racial groups has been a focus of intense discussion and disagreement for more than 50 years. While the last several decades of research have definitively demonstrated that genetic variation can influence measures of cognitive function, the inferences drawn by some participants in the controversy regarding the implications of these findings for racial differences in cognitive ability are highly dubious. Of equal importance, there is no compelling scientific rationale for focusing on and devoting substantial effort to determining mean differences in intelligence or other cognitive functions between groups with incompletely defined and dynamic (and therefore not definitively definable) boundaries.

Extracting Concepts for Precision Oncology from the Biomedical Literature.

This paper describes an initial dataset and automatic natural language processing (NLP) method for extracting concepts related to precision oncology from biomedical research articles. We extract five concept types: Cancer, Mutation, Population, Treatment, Outcome. A corpus of 250 biomedical abstracts were annotated with these concepts following standard double-annotation procedures.

Oral immune dysfunction is associated with the expansion of FOXP3PD-1Amphiregulin T cells during HIV infection.

Residual systemic inflammation and mucosal immune dysfunction persist in people living with HIV, despite treatment with combined anti-retroviral therapy, but the underlying immune mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we report that the altered immune landscape of the oral mucosa of HIV-positive patients on therapy involves increased TLR and inflammasome signaling, localized CD4 T cell hyperactivation, and, counterintuitively, enrichment of FOXP3 T cells. HIV infection of oral tonsil cultures in vitro causes an increase in FOXP3 T cells expressing PD-1, IFN-γ, Amphiregulin and IL-10.

The kids are not alright: A preliminary report of Post-COVID syndrome in university students.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and features of protracted COVID-19 symptoms in non-hospitalized university students who experienced mild-to-moderate acute illness.

Participants: COVID-19 positive participants with symptoms ≥ 28 days (N = 22), herein referred to as post-COVID syndrome, were compared to those who fully recovered (N = 21) and those never diagnosed with the disease (N = 58).

Methods: Students completed online study to earn research credit for class.

Examining HIV-related stigma among African, Caribbean, and Black church congregants from the Black PRAISE study in Ontario, Canada.

HIV-related stigma impedes adoption and implementation of effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies. It may also exacerbate racial/ethnic HIV disparities. Given high levels of religious observance within African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities and the social capital that faith-based organizations hold, these entities may be promising venues for stigma-remediation and effective partners in community-based, HIV-focused programing.

Love, Judgement and HIV: Congregants' Perspectives on an Intervention for Black Churches to Promote Critical Awareness of HIV Affecting Black Canadians.

We assess participants' experience of Black Pastors Raising Awareness and Insight of Stigma through Engagement (Black PRAISE), an intervention for Black churches to promote critical awareness of HIV affecting Black Canadian communities. We used a community-based participatory approach to implement Black PRAISE among six churches in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa, in October-November 2016. For the intervention, congregants received a booklet with validated HIV-related information, attended a sermon on compassion and justice, viewed a short film on HIV-related stigma, and completed baseline and follow-up surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

Black PRAISE: engaging Black congregations to strengthen critical awareness of HIV affecting Black Canadian communities.

In Canada, HIV disproportionately affects Black communities. Though Black faith leaders play an influential role engaging Black communities around social care and social justice, their response to HIV has been somewhat muted. Black PRAISE is a novel intervention for Black churches to strengthen congregants' critical awareness of HIV affecting Black communities.

A Disquisition on MHC Restriction and T Cell Recognition in Five Acts.

The seminal discovery in the early 1970s, credited to Peter Doherty and Rolf Zinkernagel, of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) restriction exhibited by cytotoxic T cells represented a major conceptual advance in understanding antigen recognition by conventional T cells. This advance also led to other major new insights into the ontogeny and immunobiology of T cells and catalyzed a renaissance in viral immunology. In this commentary in honor of Peter Doherty, I offer five brief reflections on different aspects of the phenomenon of MHC restriction and the process by which it was discovered and explained.
