The role of a school nurse has evolved due, in part, to complex health conditions and the COVID-19 pandemic. In turn, nurse burnout and early retirement are contributing to school nurse shortages across the United States. Interprofessional support, training, and mentorship are needed to support school nurses new to the field.

In addition to promotion of rapid coagulation, resorption, and biocompatibility are desirable attributes. Plant starch-based polysaccharide hemostat powders are effective and widely used hemostatic agents, however their source and/or processing can affect characteristics such as in vivo degradability.

Despite its large reach, there is a need for the evaluation of changes in health-related outcomes for individuals engaged with Cooperative Extension. A team-based challenge was developed using community-engaged participatory research integrated with Cooperative Extension to encourage healthy eating and physical activity behaviors through Cooperative Extension programming.

Meanwhile, the sensitivity of seabirds and tussac to climate change is unknown because of a lack of long-term records in the South Atlantic. Our 14,000-year multiproxy record reveals an ecosystem state shift following seabird establishment 5000 years ago, as marine-derived nutrients from guano facilitated tussac establishment, peat productivity, and increased fire.

Methods: Cross-sectional study of FV behaviors of community members enrolled in a team-based challenge offered by Extension. t test and chi-square analyses examined differences in FV intake and FV stage of change.
Background: Chemically modified sodium hyaluronate and carboxymethylcellulose (HA/CMC) membrane clinically reduces adhesion formation following surgery but was not designed for laparoscopic use. HA/CMC powder of identical chemical composition has been developed to allow for application laparoscopically. We compared the adhesion reduction efficacy of HA/CMC powder and film when applied directly to or remote from sites of surgical trauma.

We hypothesized that hemostatic agents would be a significant nidus for adhesion formation and that a resorbable barrier would effectively reduce adhesions to hemostatic agents. Four commercial hemostatic agents, each composed of a different biomaterial matrix, were implanted in female Sprague-Dawley rats, and adhesion formation was examined 7 days after surgery.

We tested whether HA-CMC membrane hydrated in saline (slurry) is an effective alternative to HA-CMC membrane for preventing surgical adhesions in rat models of abdominal surgery.
Materials And Methods: All studies were performed in rat cecal abrasion or sidewall defect models of adhesion formation.
A retrospective review of an outbreak of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus soft tissue infections in a high school football team was conducted. Thirteen players had 20 infections. Available community-acquired methicillin-resistant S.

In this study, a composite prosthesis that was designed to be less susceptible to adhesion formation than PPM was evaluated in a rabbit incisional hernia repair model.
Materials And Methods: A 5 x 7-cm full-thickness defect was created in the abdominal wall of 30 female New Zealand White rabbits.
The effect of a phenacyl imidazolium compound (LY177507 or Proglycosyn, Eli Lilly) on the direct (glucose-->glucose-6-phosphate-->glycogen) and indirect (three-carbon compounds-->glucose-6-phosphate-->glycogen) pathways of liver glycogen synthesis was studied in conscious rats. [1-13C]Glucose (99% enriched) was infused intraduodenally into chronically catheterized Proglycosyn-treated (n = 7) and saline-treated (n = 7) rats for 120 min. Net hepatic glycogen synthetic rates were increased twofold in drug-treated rats compared with saline-treated controls.

Isolated, perifused rat islets were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde, detergent permeabilized, and labeled with a mAb specific for alpha-PKC. The labeling was visualized by confocal immunofluorescent microscopy.

To examine in vivo effects of IGF-I in obese Zucker rats (another model of insulin resistance) 6 obese and 6 lean rats received euglycemic IGF-I infusions (0.65 nmol.

The effects of dietary supplementation of dihydroxyacetone and pyruvate (DHAP) on metabolic responses and endurance capacity during leg exercise were determined in eight untrained males (20-30 yr). During the 7 days before exercise, a high-carbohydrate diet was consumed (70% carbohydrate, 18% protein, 12% fat; 35 kcal/kg body weight). One hundred grams of either Polycose (placebo) or dihydroxyacetone and pyruvate (treatment, 3:1) were substituted for a portion of carbohydrate.

The precise manner by which this occurs is unclear but may involve intrinsic mechanisms related to the muscular pump, neural influences, and chemoreceptor control. Recent observations suggest that submaximal threshold loads may result in hyperventilation.

The effects of dietary supplementation of dihydroxyacetone and pyruvate (DHAP) on endurance capacity and metabolic responses during arm exercise were determined in 10 untrained males (20-26 yr). Subjects performed arm ergometer exercise (60% peak O2 consumption) to exhaustion after consumption of standard diets (55% carbohydrate, 15% protein, 30% fat; 35 kcal/kg) containing either 100 g of Polycose (placebo, P) or DHAP (3:1, treatment) substituted for a portion of carbohydrate. The two diets were administered in a random order, and each was consumed for a 7-day period.

The effect of blood glucose extraction on the perception of exertion was examined during prolonged arm exercise. Eight male subjects consumed in counter-balanced order a standard daily diet containing either (1) 75 g dihydroxyacetone and 25 g sodium pyruvate (DHAP) or (2) an isocaloric amount of placebo, to manipulate blood glucose extraction. Following each 7-day diet, subjects exercised to exhaustion at 60% of peak arm oxygen consumption.

To test the hypothesis that these three-carbon compounds would improve glycemic control in diabetes, we evaluated the effect of DHP on plasma glucose concentration, turnover, recycling, and tolerance in 7 women with noninsulin-dependent diabetes. The subjects consumed a 1,500-calorie diet (55% carbohydrate, 30% fat, 15% protein), randomly containing 13% of the calories as DHP (1/1) or Polycose (placebo; PL), as a drink three times daily for 7 days.
