Setting: Division of respiratory medicine in a specialised infectious disease hospital in Rome, Italy.
Objective: Retrospective evaluation of tuberculosis (TB) care associated costs in an integrated in- and out-patient management programme.
Design: Review of the medical records of 92 human immunodeficiency virus negative TB cases admitted between September 2000 and May 2003.
Most published studies have found bowel ultrasound to be a useful tool in the management of Crohn's disease. Indeed, it has been successfully used as the imaging technique of choice in screening patients with clinically suspected Crohn's disease. In these patients, bowel ultrasound, which is well accepted by patients, non-invasive and of low cost, may be the first diagnostic tool employed for young patients and can be used in the preliminary diagnostic work-up prior to further invasive tests.

We present a case of a 62-year-old diabetic woman observed at our institution for the appearance of back pain and dysuria. A CT scan revealed a large lesion of left kidney with psoas muscle infiltration and the patient undrwent a nephrectomy.

Clinical course depends on the occurrence of multiple tumors as central nervous system tumors, phaeochromocytoma and renal cell carcinoma. BK activation of the B(2) receptor provoked: (a) the phosphorylation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2); (b) the translocation from the cytosol to the membrane of the conventional protein kinase C-alpha (PKC-alpha) and novel PKC-delta and PKC-epsilon; (c) the phosphorylation of protein kinase B (PKB/ Akt); (d) the proliferation of MCF-7 cells. The BK-induced ERK1/2 phosphorylation was completely blocked by PD98059 (an inhibitor of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK or MEK)) and by LY294002 (an inhibitor of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)), and was reduced by GF109203X (an inhibitor of both novel and conventional PKCs); Gö6976, a conventional PKCs inhibitor, did not have any effect.

VEGF-A has received most attention, as it is a potent stimulator of vascular growth. Results in clinical trials of VEGF-A as a therapeutic agent have fallen short of high expectations because of serious edematous side effects caused by its activity in promoting vascular permeability.

We here investigated the mitogenic effects and the signalling pathways of BK in primary cultured human epithelial breast cells obtained from a tumour and from the histologically proven non-malignant tissue adjacent to the tumour. BK provoked cell proliferation, increase in cytosolic calcium, activation of protein kinase C (PKC)-alpha, -beta, -delta, -epsilon and -eta and phosphorylation of the extracellular-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2).

Ease in expansion from adult bone marrow, as well as its separation from ethical issues, makes MSCs appealing for clinical application. MSCs treated with retinoic acid resulted in synaptic transmission, based on immunostaining of synaptophysin and electrophysiological studies.

This study demonstrates that P2Y2 activation provoked: (a) a cytosol-to-membrane translocation of PKC-alpha, -betaI and -epsilon; (b) the phosphorylation of the extra cellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2); (c) the expression of c-Fos protein; (d) no effects on the G1/S progression and overall cell proliferation. The P2Y2-stimulated ERK1/2 phosphorylation was: (a) completely blocked by PD098059, a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK) inhibitor or by W-7, a Ca2+-calmodulin (CaM) antagonist; (b) reduced by GF109203X, inhibitor of PKCs, or AG1478, inhibitor of EGFR tyrosine kinase, or LY294002/wortmannin, inhibitors of phosphoinositide 3-kinases, or cytochalasin D, inhibitor of actin microfilament bundles polymerization.

In particular, Crohn's disease (CD) for its pathologic characteristics (that is, inflammatory infiltration of the entire bowel wall with possible extension to the surrounding mesentery) is the disease entity which has mainly taken advantage from this non-invasive, radiation-free technique. Beside correctly defining anatomic location and extension of CD lesions within the bowel in the majority of cases, US also shows perigut abnormalities and may demonstrate complications such as fistulas and abscesses.

Treatments like external counterpulsation, transmyocardial laser revascularization, stem cell transplantation or spinal cord stimulation may be suitable for these patients. The analysis of major studies on spinal cord stimulation based on exercise ECG, Holter monitoring and positron emission tomography, has shown a reduction in anginal attacks and in nitroglycerin pills.

The kinin peptides are released during inflammation and are amongst the most potent known mediators of vasodilatation, pain, and oedema. A role in the modulation or induction of healthy breast tissue growth has been postulated for tissue kallikrein present in human milk. Moreover, tissue kallikrein was found in malignant human breast tissue and bradykinin (BK) stimulates the proliferation of immortalised breast cancer cells.

Our objective in this study was to investigate the hypothesis that P2Y6 also controls proliferation and Na+/K+ATPase activity; the pathways used in these actions were partially characterised. We found that P2Y6 activation controlled cell proliferation but not the activity of the Na+/K+ATPase.

The efficacy and safety of combination therapy (repaglinide plus pioglitazone) was compared to repaglinide or pioglitazone in 24-week treatment of type 2 diabetes. This randomized, multicenter, open-label, parallel-group study enrolled 246 adults (age 24-85) who had shown inadequate response in previous sulfonylurea or metformin monotherapy (HbA(1c) > 7%). Prior therapy was withdrawn for 2 weeks, followed by randomization to repaglinide, pioglitazone, or repaglinide/pioglitazone.
