The aging male: Relationship between male age, sperm quality and sperm DNA damage in an unselected population of 3124 men attending the fertility centre for the first time.

Objective: the aim of our study was to put forward insights to treat any possible correlation among sperm quality, sperm DNA damage and male age as they may have fertility implications for men who choose to delay fatherhood.

Materials And Methods: Our study is a non-interventional retrospective analysis of 3124 semen samples from patients that were investigated for the conventional semen parameters. Tunel test assay was set up for the evaluation of the sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI).

Infrastructure for hand hygiene in a teaching hospital.

Objective: To evaluate the hospital infrastructure and the knowledge of the coordinators about the unit structure for hand hygiene.

Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional design study carried out in a teaching hospital in the South of Brazil, in the period between December 2016 and January 2017. Eighteen inpatient care units were evaluated, and 16 coordinators were interviewed.

Isthmocele: From Risk Factors to Management.

Objective:  The aim of the present study was to perform a comprehensive review of the literature to provide a complete and clear picture of isthmocele-a hypoechoic area within the myometrium at the site of the uterine scar of a previous cesarean section-by exploring in depth every aspect of this condition.

Methods:  A comprehensive review of the literature was performed to identify the most relevant studies about this topic.

Results:  Every aspect of isthmocele has been studied and described: pathophysiology, clinical symptoms, classification, and diagnosis.

Comparison of Psychosocial Variables Associated With Loneliness in Centenarian vs Elderly Populations in New Zealand.

Importance: Loneliness is associated with reduced health-related quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality and typically worsens with aging.

Objectives: To evaluate associations between demographic and psychosocial variables and loneliness, examine any age-specific associations, and compare centenarians (aged ≥100 years) with elderly people (aged 65-99 years).

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study, previously collected data from all New Zealanders 65 years and older who completed their first international Resident Assessment Instrument-Home Care (interRAI-HC) assessment during the study period (January 1, 2013, to November 27, 2017) were reviewed.

Post-abortion long-acting reversible contraception in a sample of Italian women: intrauterine device versus subdermal implant.

Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) represent an especially effective kind of post-abortion contraception. We aimed at assessing satisfaction, discontinuation, efficacy, and tolerability associated with either levonorgestrel intrauterine device (L-IUCD), the copper intrauterine device (C-IUCD) and implant (IMP) after termination of pregnancy (TOP). We recorded baseline data about the patients and performed phone surveys at 3, 6 and 12 months after insertion to assess the bleeding profile.

Technology Use Patterns Among Patients Enrolled in Inpatient Detoxification Treatment.

Background: Technology-based interventions offer a practical, low-cost, and scalable approach to optimize the treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs) and related comorbidities (HIV, hepatitis C infection). This study assessed technology use patterns (mobile phones, desktop computers, internet, social media) among adults enrolled in inpatient detoxification treatment.

Methods: A 49-item, quantitative and qualitative semi-structured survey assessed for demographic characteristics, technology use patterns (ie, mobile phone, text messaging [TM], smart phone applications, desktop computer, internet, and social media use), privacy concerns, and barriers to technology use.

Sustained low-efficiency dialysis for metformin-associated lactic acidosis in patients with acute kidney injury.

Background: The choice of the specific modality and treatment duration of renal replacement therapy (RRT) to adopt in metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) is still debated. We aimed to verify if sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED) is a rational choice in patients with MALA and acute kidney injury (AKI).

Methods: We collected serial serum metformin measurements, clinical parameters, and outcome data in ten consecutive patients (mean age 77 years [range 58-88], 5 males) admitted to our renal intensive care unit for suspected MALA associated with AKI and hemodynamic instability.

Identifying hoarding disorder in the elderly using the interRAI.

Objectives: Hoarding disorder (HD) is prevalent in older adults and contributes to morbidity and mortality. We attempted to estimate rates of hoarding amongst the elderly using the international Residential Assessment Instrument - Home Care (interRAI-HC).

Setting: The interRAI is a mandatory prerequisite in New Zealand (NZ) for government-funded community support or for entry into aged residential care.

Management of Transverse Vaginal Septum by Vaginoscopic Resection: Hymen Conservative Technique.

Transverse vaginal septum is a rare female genital tract anomaly, and little is described about its surgical treatment. We report the case of a patient who wished to preserve hymenal integrity due to social and cultural beliefs. We performed a vaginoscopic resection of the septum under laparoscopic view, followed by the introduction of a Foley catheter in the vagina, thus preserving the hymen.

Biomolecular basis related to inflammation in the pathogenesis of endometrial cancer.

Objective: Endometrial cancer (EC) is a complex gynecological neoplasm with several clinical, histopathological and genetic features. Different hormonal, metabolic and biochemical axes are involved in pathogenesis. Obesity is a well-known risk factor for this disease and the role of local and systemic effects of adipose tissue, especially in the promotion of subclinical chronic inflammation, is an important issue.

Fetal Noncompaction Cardiomyopathy and Histologic Diagnosis of Spongy Myocardium: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCCM) and left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC), in their isolated form, are rare cardiomyopathies. They are characterized by a thickened myocardium due to the presence of deep trabeculae recesses, and to thick trabeculae. This condition is associated with a variable clinical phenotype including heart failure, thromboembolism, and sudden death.

Role of interventional radiology in pregnancy complicated by placenta accreta spectrum disorder: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: To evaluate the potential benefit of interventional radiology (IR) in improving the outcome of women undergoing surgery for a placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorder.

Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases were searched for studies comparing outcomes of women with a prenatal diagnosis of PAS who underwent an IR procedure before surgery vs those who did not, using a robust collection of terms relating to PAS. The primary outcome was intraoperative estimated blood loss (EBL).

The role of elective and emergency cesarean delivery in maternal postpartum anhedonia, anxiety, and depression.

Objective: To compare levels of anhedonia, anxiety, and depression in women following elective and emergency cesarean delivery.

Methods: An observational study was conducted between January 1, 2015, and May 31, 2017, among Italian women who delivered healthy neonates at term at the Policlinico Abano Terme, Italy, by vaginal, elective cesarean delivery (ElCD) or emergency cesarean (EmCD) delivery. The women completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), including specific factors within each category, 2 days post-delivery to measure postpartum depressive symptomatology.
