Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common neoplasm in male patients. To date, there's no certain indication about the maximum waiting time (WT) acceptable for treatment beginning and the impact on oncological and functional outcomes has not been well established.

Methods: Data from the National Research Council PCa monitoring multicenter project in Italy (Pros-IT CNR) were prospectively collected and analyzed.

Purpose: Therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer (PCa) have been evolving dramatically worldwide. The current article reports on the evolution of surgical management strategies for PCa in Italy.

Methods: The data from two independent Italian multicenter projects, the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA (started in 2007, holding data of 890 patients) and the Pros-IT-CNR project (started in 2014, with data of 692 patients), were compared.

Medullary carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor of the kidney. It affects individuals of African descent and all cases reported show evidence of sickle cell trait. We reviewed an unusual carcinoma arising in a white man, the ninth in the literature.

Purpose: We established diagnostic accuracy in terms of the sensitivity and specificity with which a rigorously trained canine olfactory system could recognize specific volatile organic compounds of prostate cancer in urine samples.

Materials And Methods: Two 3-year-old female German Shepherd Explosion Detection Dogs were trained to identify prostate cancer specific volatile organic compounds in urine samples. They were tested on 362 patients with prostate cancer (range low risk to metastatic) and on 540 healthy controls with no nonneoplastic disease or nonprostatic tumor.

To assess the efficacy and tolerability of D-mannose-containing product (Cystoman(®)) in preventing recurrence in patients who underwent surgical treatment for infection related urinary stones. From January 2011 to February 2013 we have enrolled all consecutive patients affected by staghorn calculi and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). All patients recommended for surgery were scheduled for percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

Purpose: To critically review and synthesize data of ureteroscopy (URS) in different circumstances that all urologists may encounter during everyday clinical practice, such as pregnancy, obesity, bleeding diathesis, renal stones larger than 2 cm, calyceal diverticula, and kidney malformations.

Methods: According to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review was performed to identify articles published between 1990 and December 2013 that reported different indications and special circumstances for URS. Articles were separated into the following categories: pregnancy, obesity, bleeding diathesis, stones larger than 2 cm in diameter, calyceal diverticula, and kidney malformations.

Introduction: Major kidney stones have traditionally been treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy. However, retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), which until a few years ago was considered inappropriate for this purpose, is becoming a viable, attractive alternative. The aim of the current study was to assess the efficacy and safety of RIRS combined with holmium laser lithotripsy for the treatment of stones > 2 cm in diameter in a large series of patients, reporting complications according to the Clavien-Dindo classification.

Despite years of intensive investigation that has been made in understanding prostate cancer, it remains a major cause of death in men worldwide. Prostate cancer emerges from multiple alterations that induce changes in expression patterns of genes and proteins that function in networks controlling critical cellular events. Based on the exponential aging of the population and the increasing life expectancy in industrialized Western countries, prostate cancer in the elderly men is becoming a disease of increasing significance.

Aims: To retrospectively evaluate and compare the incidence of acute genitourinary (aGU), upper gastrointestinal (uGI) and rectal (lGI) injuries after radiotherapy with hypo-fractionation by volumetric modulation arc therapy (VMAT, the Hypo-RapidArc group) and conventional fractionation by three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) in patients with localized prostate cancer treated, after radical prostatectomy, with prostatic bed irradiation.

Patients And Methods: Between 2007 and 2012, 84 consecutive patients with clinically localized prostate cancer submitted to radical prostatectomy were also treated with irradiation to the prostate bed. Forty-five received 3DCRT and 39 Hypo-RapidArc.

Background: To evaluate the feasibility and early side effects of a short course hypo-fractionated SBRT programme with Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and Flattening Filter Free (FFF) beams.

Methods: A prospective phase I-II study, started on February 2012. Inclusion criteria were: age ≤ 80 years, WHO-PS ≤ 2, PSA ≤ 20 ng/ml, histologically proven prostate adenocarcinoma, T1-T2 stage, no distant metastases, no previous surgery other than TURP, no malignant tumours in the previous 5 years, IPSS 0-7.

Objectives: To determine whether X-ray, computed tomography (CT), bone scan, and clinical impression accurately reflect the level of vertebral fracture in patients about to undergo vertebroplasty.

Design: Retrospective observational study, utilizing patient inpatient notes, referral correspondence, and clinicians' private notes.

Setting: Single center - all patients referred to one pain medicine physician for vertebroplasty who subsequently had the procedure.

The actual gold standard for the diagnosis of prostate cancer includes the serum prostate-specific antigen, the digital rectal examination, and the ultrasound-guided systematic prostate biopsy sampling. In the last years, the real-time elastography has been introduced as an imaging technique to increase the detection rate of prostate cancer and simultaneously reduce the number of biopsies sampled for a single patient. Here, we evaluated a consecutive series of 102 patients with negative digital-rectal examination and transrectal ultrasound, and prostate-specific antigen value ranging between 2.

Prostate cancer (PC) remains a cause of death worldwide. Here we investigate whether a single microfocus of PC at the biopsy (graded as Gleason 6 or less, ≤5% occupancy) and the PSA <10 ng/mL can define the archetype of low-risk prostate disease. 4500 consecutive patients were enrolled.

Unlabelled: What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Transrectal gray-scale ultrasonography guided prostate biopsy sampling is the method for diagnosing prostate cancer (PC) in patients with an increased prostate specific antigen level and/or abnormal digital rectal examination. Several imaging strategies have been proposed to optimize the diagnostic value of biopsy sampling, although at the first biopsy nearly 10-30% of PC still remains undiagnosed. This study compares the PC detection rate when employing Colour Doppler ultransongraphy with or without the injection of SonoVue™ microbubble contrast agent, versus the transrectal ultrasongraphy-guided systematic biopsy sampling.

Objective: Corporoplasty using plication of the albuginea is a simple technique but considered by many Authors at high risk for recurrence in respect to other corrective techniques using excision of the albuginea tunica. The aim of this study was to assess long-term functional and cosmetic results of this approach done in an outpatient environment.

Material And Methods: From January 1997 to December 2008 we submitted 217 patients presenting induratio penis plastica (183) or congenital curvature (34) to corporoplasty with albuginea plication.

Introduction: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels can show wide fluctuations when repeatedly measured. Here we investigatewd if: (a) biopsy timing influences the prostate cancer (PC) detection rate in patients with fluctuating PSA (flu-PSA) in comparison with patients with steadily increasing PSA (si-PSA); (b) PSA slope estimated in patients with flu-PSA predicts a different risk of cancer detection; (c) flu-PSA and si-PSA patients develop PC in topographically different sites; (d) the behaviour of pre-operative PSA is an expression of a disease with defferent characteristics to the following radical prostatectomy.

Methods: The study involved 211 patients who underwent at least a second biopsy after a first negative prostate biopsy.
