In this document, we discuss the main difficulties faced by investigators in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and propose potential solutions. Challenges include the scarcity of experts in rare disorders, higher costs of supplies, underfunding, and limited patient advocacy groups. Establishing collaborations among patient advocacy groups, governments, investigators, and other stakeholders to create action plans can address many of these issues and promote research into rare diseases.

Method: Male C57BL6 mice were fed either a normal diet (control) or a methionine and choline-deficient diet for four weeks and then treated orally with simvastatin (4 mg/kg once a day) for two final weeks. At the end of the experimental period, liver integrity, biochemical analysis, hepatic lipids, histology, DNA damage, biomarkers of oxidative stress, and endoplasmic reticulum stress were assessed.
Rare genetic disorders are currently in the spotlight due to the elevated number of different conditions and significant total number of affected patients. The study of these disorders is extremely helpful for the elucidation of physiological processes related with complex disorders. Isolated populations are instrumental for the study of genetic disorders, considering their homogeneity and high proportion of affected patients in a small geographic area.

After 96 hr, TAA administration resulted in hepatic necrosis, significant increases in serum transaminase activity, and increases in hepatic lipoperoxidation.
