The alphavirus determinants of intercellular long extension formation.

The alphavirus chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a serious human pathogen that can cause large-scale epidemics characterized by fever and joint pain and often resulting in chronic arthritis. Infection by alphaviruses including CHIKV and the closely related Semliki Forest virus (SFV) can induce the formation of filopodia-like intercellular long extensions (ILEs). ILEs emanate from an infected cell, stably attach to a neighboring cell, and mediate cell-to-cell viral transmission that is resistant to neutralizing antibodies.

A hand-washing community-based educational intervention to reduce abscess incidence among people who inject drugs: a cluster randomised controlled clinical trial protocol (the HAWA study protocol).

Background: Besides the high prevalence of HIV and HCV infections, people who inject drugs (PWID) have a cumulative risk of acquiring skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) from, among other things, social precariousness, homelessness/unstable housing, and unhygienic injecting practices. We propose to evaluate whether a two-component educational hand hygiene intervention which combines training in hand-washing with the supply of a single-use alcohol-based hand rub, called MONO-RUB, is effective in reducing injection-related abscesses in the PWID population. Specifically, we shall implement a nationwide, two-arm, multi-centre, cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this intervention in PWID.

Longitudinal profiling of human androgenotes through single-cell analysis unveils paternal gene expression dynamics in early embryo development.

Study Question: How do transcriptomics vary in haploid human androgenote embryos at single cell level in the first four cell cycles of embryo development?

Summary Answer: Gene expression peaks at the fourth cell cycle, however some androcytes exhibit unique transcriptional behaviors.

What Is Known Already: The developmental potential of an embryo is determined by the competence of the oocyte and the sperm. However, studies of the contribution of the paternal genome using pure haploid androgenotes are very scarce.

Underestimation of glyphosate intake by the methods currently used by regulatory agencies.

The acceptable daily intake (ADI) is an estimate of the amount of a substance in food or beverages that can be consumed daily over a lifetime without presenting an appreciable risk to health. To assess the risk of ingesting glyphosate, regulatory agencies compare glyphosate daily intake to ADI. Based on published data on urine glyphosate levels measured according to known quantities of ingested glyphosate, our objectives were to test the robustness of the mathematical model currently used to calculate glyphosate daily intake, and to propose alternative models based on urinary excretion kinetics.

Development and validation of a short version of the questionnaire of stressful life events (QSLE).

Stressful life events (SLE) tend to occur before the onset of psychosis, this highlights the importance of its detection and evaluation in these patients. The need to have instruments that assess SLE easily and quickly underpins the objective of this study, which is to validate a short version of the questionnaire of stressful life events (QSLE). 124 patients with first-episode psychosis and 218 healthy controls aged between 11 and 52 years were recruited.

Measurement of Direct-Photon Cross Section and Double-Helicity Asymmetry at sqrt[s]=510 GeV in p[over →]+p[over →] Collisions.

We present measurements of the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry A_{LL} of direct-photon production in p[over →]+p[over →] collisions at sqrt[s]=510  GeV. The measurements have been performed at midrapidity (|η|<0.25) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

Adverse events in the global healthcare practice of an Occupational Mutual Insurance Company in Spain.

Background: Patient safety is currently a main issue in healthcare practice. Adverse events (AEs) management is a key instrument for the application of strategies to prevent harm to patients.

Total RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is an important tool in the study of mosquitoes and the RNA viruses they vector as it allows assessment of both host and viral RNA in specimens. However, there are two main constraints. First, as with many other species, abundant mosquito ribosomal RNA (rRNA) serves as the predominant template from which sequences are generated, meaning that the desired host and viral templates are sequenced far less.

Purpose: The association between egg consumption and cardiovascular events remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate this association in cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic coronary heart disease (ICHD), stroke, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and CVD mortality in an Iranian population.

Methods: This prospective cohort study included 6504 adults (age ≥ 35 years) with no history of CVD event at baseline.

Validation and reproducibility of a semi-qualitative food frequency questionnaire for assessment of sodium intake in Iranian population.

A new tool to screen patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea in the primary care setting: a prospective multicenter study.

Background: The coordination between different levels of care is essential for the management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The objective of this multicenter project was to develop a screening model for OSA in the primary care setting.

Methods: Anthropometric data, clinical history, and symptoms of OSA were recorded in randomly selected primary care patients, who also underwent a home sleep apnea test (HSAT).

This cross-sectional study was designed to examine the association of adherence to the dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean (MED) dietary patterns with the distribution of blood pressure and pre-hypertension prevalence.

Methods And Results: This cross-sectional study was carried out in 1363 non-hypertensive adults.

Influence of PACE score and conduction disturbances in the incidence of early new onset atrial fibrillation after typical atrial flutter ablation.

Purpose: Patients undergoing cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) ablation for typical flutter (AFL) have a high incidence of new onset atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to analyze the influence of PACE score to predict new onset AF in this subset of patients to stratify thromboembolic risk.

Methods: Between 2017 and 2019, patients undergoing CTI ablation for AFL and without history of AF were prospectively included.

Probing Gluon Spin-Momentum Correlations in Transversely Polarized Protons through Midrapidity Isolated Direct Photons in p^{↑}+p Collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV.

Studying spin-momentum correlations in hadronic collisions offers a glimpse into a three-dimensional picture of proton structure. The transverse single-spin asymmetry for midrapidity isolated direct photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200  GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because direct photons in particular are produced from the hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force, this measurement is a clean probe of initial-state spin-momentum correlations inside the proton and is in particular sensitive to gluon interference effects within the proton.

Red and processed meat consumption and risk of incident cardiovascular disease and mortality: Isfahan cohort study.

To investigate the cardiovascular risks associated with red and/or processed meat intake in a large population-based cohort study in Iran. A total of 5432 participants from the Isfahan Cohort Study (ICS) were enrolled. Diet was assessed using a validated, 48-item food frequency questionnaire.

IER2-induced senescence drives melanoma invasion through osteopontin.

Expression of the immediate-early response gene IER2 has been associated with the progression of several types of cancer, but its functional role is poorly understood. We found that increased IER2 expression in human melanoma is associated with shorter overall survival, and subsequently investigated the mechanisms through which IER2 exerts this effect. In experimental melanoma models, sustained expression of IER2 induced senescence in a subset of melanoma cells in a p53/MAPK/AKT-dependent manner.

Frequency of outpatient care adverse events in an occupational mutual insurance company in Spain.

Background: Occupational mutual insurance companies (OMICs), in collaboration with the Spanish Social Security System, provide healthcare and manage the economic benefits for the workers in Spain. They have ambulatory care centers that attend outpatient trauma pathology, although most of the studies published have focused on surgical and hospital activity. The aim of this study was to detect adverse events (AEs) in outpatient trauma care in the context of an OMIC.

Rescuing monopronucleated-derived human blastocysts: a model to study chromosomal topography and fingerprinting.

Objective: To quantify the percentage of monopronuclear-derived blastocysts (MNBs) that are potentially useful for reproductive purposes using classic and state-of-the-art chromosome analysis approaches, and to study chromosomal distribution in the inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm (TE) for intertissue/intratissue concordance comparison.
