The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is the main driver of climate variability at mid to high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, affecting wildfire activity, which in turn pollutes the air and contributes to human health problems and mortality, and potentially provides strong feedback to the climate system through emissions and land cover changes. Here we report the largest Southern Hemisphere network of annually resolved tree ring fire histories, consisting of 1,767 fire-scarred trees from 97 sites (from 22 °S to 54 °S) in southern South America (SAS), to quantify the coupling of SAM and regional wildfire variability using recently created multicentury proxy indices of SAM for the years 1531-2010 AD. We show that at interannual time scales, as well as at multidecadal time scales across 37-54 °S, latitudinal gradient elevated wildfire activity is synchronous with positive phases of the SAM over the years 1665-1995.

We explored at global and regional levels the current distribution of protected areas along biophysical, human, and biological gradients, and assessed to what extent protection has pursued (i) a balanced representation of biophysical environments, (ii) a set of preferred conditions (biological, spiritual, economic, or geopolitical), or (iii) existing opportunities for conservation regardless of any representation or preference criteria.
Methods: We used histograms to describe the distribution of terrestrial protected areas along biophysical, human, and biological independent gradients and linear and non-linear regression and correlation analyses to describe the sign, shape, and strength of the relationships.

Aim: What are the reasons for institutionalising community-dwelling persons with dementia?
Method: A written survey of family caregivers and general practitioners was undertaken.
Results: Within 2 years 47 of 351 people with dementia (13%) were institutionalised. The person with dementia was involved in the decision in only 1/3 of the cases.
Objective: In research as well as in the practice of caregiver counselling, the subjective burden of family caregivers is considered an important characteristic of home care. The objective of the present study was to provide an extended validation of the German language version of the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers (BSFC) published in 2001.
Methods: Extended validation was performed using medical, interview, and health insurance data of 351 informal caregivers and their relatives who had dementia.
Background: Subjective burden is a central variable describing the situation encountered by family caregivers. The 10-item short version of the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers (BSFC-short/BSFC-s) was developed to provide an economical measure of this variable. Land-use change is the main component of regional environmental change, while protected areas represent a direct land use policy to prevent its potentially negative effects on biodiversity and environmental services. We combined an analysis of trends in land use and human demography with trends in creation of protected areas during the last three decades in northwestern Argentina, a subtropical region including a wide range of environments. The eighty nine administrative analysis units of the region were classified into four ecological groups based on their percentage of cover by the six eco-regions of the study area: (1) "Dry valleys"; dominated by Middle-elevation deserts; (2) "Highlands", dominated by High-elevation alpine zones and plateaus; (3) "Humid ecosystems", dominated by Foggy grasslands and Humid forests, and (4) "Dry forests".

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hyper- and hypothyroidism on thyroid hormone concentrations and deiodinase activities in nine regions of the rat brain. Four weeks of treatment with 75 microg thyroxine (T4)/kg body wt induced a two- to threefold increase in T4 levels in all of these brain regions, whereas the 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations were reduced in five brain regions and remained unchanged in four. Even after 8 wk treatment with 300 microg T4/kg, the T3 concentrations remained normal in cortical areas, the hippocampus and amygdala, and were elevated only in areas in which inner-ring deiodinase activity was low or absent, and in the hypothalamus.

Quantification of iodothyronine was performed by RIA following a newly developed method of purification and separation by HPLC. 3,5-T(2), 3,3'-T(2), rT(3) and T(2)S were detectable in the low femtomolar range (20-200 fmol/g) in most areas of the rat brain.
