Genetic perturbation of IFN-α transcriptional modulators in human endothelial cells uncovers pivotal regulators of angiogenesis.

Interferon-α (IFN-α) comprises a family of 13 cytokines involved in the modulation of antiviral, immune, and anticancer responses by orchestrating a complex transcriptional network. The activation of IFN-α signaling pathway in endothelial cells results in decreased proliferation and migration, ultimately leading to suppression of angiogenesis. In this study, we knocked-down the expression of seven established or candidate modulators of IFN-α response in endothelial cells to reconstruct a gene regulatory network and to investigate the antiangiogenic activity of IFN-α.

Ruptures of the Plantar Fascia: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Introduction: Rupture of the plantar fascia is a rare condition. It can also occur spontaneously and with no history of disease of the plantar fascia, above all in athletes. This review aims to systematically analyze all cases described in the literature regarding the rupture of the plantar fascia, evaluating incidence, risk factors, and treatments, considering which procedures show the best outcomes and the highest success rate.

White Blood Cell Count Is the Most Reliable Test for the Diagnosis of Septic Arthritis After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: An Observational Study of 38 Patients.

Purpose: (1) To evaluate the diagnostic testing performance of the synovial white blood cell (WBC) count, polymorphonuclear cell percentage, and synovial glucose, synovial protein, synovial lactate dehydrogenase, and synovial C-reactive protein levels as diagnostic markers for the diagnosis of septic arthritis after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction; (2) to define the ideal thresholds of the aforementioned tests, leading to the optimal sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy; and (3) to define the sensitivity of synovial fluid culture and synovial tissue sample culture, as well as determine whether previous antibiotic treatment may affect the accuracy of these tests.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of all patients readmitted from January 2009 to September 2019 with signs suggestive of septic arthritis and undergoing a knee aspiration for synovial fluid analysis and culture. The receiver operating characteristic curve and the associated area under the curve were constructed for the aforementioned synovial markers.

Indeed, only few biological targets of antifungal agents have been characterized and can be used for limiting fungal spread from decayed fruits/vegetables to surrounding healthy ones during storage. On this concern, a promising target of new antifungal treatments may be represented by mitochondrial proteins due to some species-specific functions played by mitochondria in fungal morphogenesis, drug resistance and virulence.

The role of gestational weight gain disorders in symptoms of maternal postpartum depression.

Objective: To examine the association of gestational weight gain (GWG), categorized according to 2009 IOM guidelines as adequate, inadequate, and excessive, with symptoms of mental disorders perceived by mothers after childbearing as anhedonia, anxiety, and depression, defined by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Previous studies indicated that disorders related to GWG are associated with an increased risk of postpartum psychological distress.
