Mustard Meal Extract as an Alternative to Zinc Oxide for Protecting the Intestinal Barrier Against -Lipopolysaccharide Damage.

The present study aimed to investigate the ability of an aqueous extract derived from mustard seed meal to counteract the effects of endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the intestinal epithelium. Caco-2 cells were cultured together with HT29-MTX and used as a cellular model to analyze critical intestinal parameters, such as renewal, integrity, innate immunity, and signaling pathway. Byproducts of mustard seed oil extraction are rich in soluble polysaccharides, proteins, allyl isothiocyanates, and phenolic acids, which are known as powerful antioxidants with antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

Introduction: Tobacco use remains a significant public health issue worldwide, causing over 7 million deaths annually. Polytobacco use has become a common phenomenon. This study aims to analyze reasons for cigarette and tobacco product use, dual use and poly use among university students by sex, in China and Cyprus, selected owing to their still high consumption rates.

Efficacy of anti-seizure medications and alternative therapies (ketogenic diet, CBD, and quinidine) in KCNT1-related epilepsy: A systematic review.

Objective: KCNT1-related epilepsies encompass three main phenotypes: (i) epilepsy of infancy with migrating focal seizures (EIMFS), (ii) autosomal dominant or sporadic sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy [(AD)SHE], and (iii) different types of developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE). Many patients present with drug-resistant seizures and global developmental delays. In addition to conventional anti-seizure medications (ASM), multiple alternative therapies have been tested including the ketogenic diet (KD), cannabidiol (CBD-including Epidyolex © and other CBD derivatives) and quinidine (QUIN).

Sex-Related Differences in Post-Stroke Anxiety, Depression and Quality of Life in a Cohort of Smokers.

Background: We aimed to study anxiety, depression and quality of life in smokers after stroke by sex.

Methods: A longitudinal prospective study with a 24-month follow-up of acute stroke patients who were previously active smokers. Anxiety and depression were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale, and quality of life was evaluated with the EQ-5D questionnaire.

A Catalytic Approach for the Synthesis of Peptide-Oligonucleotides Conjugates in Aqueous Solution or On-Column.

Peptide-oligonucleotide conjugates (POCs) are covalent architectures composed of a DNA or RNA molecules linked to a peptide. These constructs have found widespread applications ranging from hybrid nanomaterials to gene-targeted therapies. Considering the important role of POCs, a new catalytic approach for their preparation is reported here, that could be applied either on solid support in anhydrous media, or post-synthetically in aqueous buffer.

Pre-emptive treatment of heart failure exacerbations in patients managed with the HeartLogic™ algorithm.

Aims: Heart failure (HF) is a chronic disease affecting 64 million people worldwide and places a severe burden on society because of its mortality, numerous re-hospitalizations and associated costs. HeartLogic™ is an algorithm programmed into implanted devices incorporating several biometric parameters which aims to predict HF episodes. It provides an index which can be monitored remotely, allowing pre-emptive treatment of congestion to prevent acute decompensation.

Lunate Pseudarthrosis: Our Clinical Experience.

Lunate pseudarthrosis is a complication of lunate fractures and few cases are described in the literature. We designed a case series of lunate pseudarthrosis, to acknowledge this topic and to show our clinical experience. Four patients were included in this study.

Treatment of scaphoid nonunion by arthroscopic cancellous bone grafting.

Introduction: In order to avoid Scaphoid Nonunion Advanced Collapse (SNAC) type osteoarthritis, which progressively affects the radial and midcarpal joints, several vascularized and non-vascularized grafting techniques have been described. Over the past decade, there has been growing interest in arthroscopic cancellous bone grafts for scaphoid nonunion. The aim of this novel prospective study was to assess the healing rate of scaphoid grafts under arthroscopy, and the prognostic factors for healing.

Jersey finger type IV: a case report.

Avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus, usually known as jersey or rugby finger, is a rare condition that can only be treated surgically. It is mostly reported in sports injuries, in which the diagnosis is easily made. It is less frequent in household accidents, but should not be ignored because good results are time-dependent.

Wide arthroscopic dorsal capsuloligamentous repair in patients with severe scapholunate instability.

A conventional arthroscopic capsuloligamentous repair is a reliable surgical solution in most patients with scapholunate instability. However, this repair does not seem to be sufficient for more advanced injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional results of a wide arthroscopic dorsal capsuloligamentous repair (WADCLR) in the management of severe scapholunate instability.

Cigarette, e-cigarette and waterpipe cognitions and use among university students in Guangzhou, China.

Introduction: There is currently little research on polytobacco use in China. The present study examined cognitions that predicted the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes and waterpipes in a Chinese sample of students.

Methods: A convenience sample of 281 university students, obtained using snowball sampling, completed an online survey during the 2019-2020 academic year in Guangzhou, China.

Background: The pathophysiology of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. While several studies have demonstrated an association between myocardial infarction and atrial fibrillation, the role of stable coronary artery disease (CAD) is still unknown. As a result, we aimed to assess the association between CAD obstruction and AF recurrence after persistent AF ablation in patients with no history of CAD.

Repair of the dorsal capsuloligamentous scapholunate septum during arthroscopic resection of painful dorsal wrist ganglion cyst: Comparative analysis of two techniques.

We compared arthroscopic cyst resection (ACR) of dorsal ganglia of the wrist, either associated to reconstruction of the dorsal capsuloligamentous scapholunate septum (ACR-DCSS) in 66 cases in which the ganglia were painful on exertion, or isolated ACR in 15 pain-free cases. A single-center retrospective study analyzed data for the period April 2013 to May 2021. The main aim was to compare pre- and post-operative functional results (pain at rest (on a numerical rating scale: NRS), pain under effort (NRS), range of motion (°), grip strength (kg)) and recurrence rate between the two techniques.

Control of hydrogen release during borohydride electrooxidation with porous carbon materials.

Due to their highly tunable electrical and structural properties, carbon materials are widely used in fuel cells. This study reviews the latest modifications carried out in order to improve the electrochemical properties of carbon-based anodes in Direct Borohydride Fuel Cell (DBFC). However, in this type of fuel cell, various types of carbon ( carbon black, activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, graphene and heteroatom-doped carbons and MOF-derived carbon materials) can provide not only catalyst support, but also hydrogen storage due to the extremely complex process of borohydride electrooxidation.

Aims: Atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation is a common procedure requiring in most cases the use of fluoroscopy. We aimed to evaluate the factors associated with a lower dose of fluoroscopy used during AF ablation with cryoballoon or radiofrequency.

Hyperselective neurectomy for the treatment of upper limb spasticity in adults and children: a prospective study.

Hyperselective neurectomy (HSN) procedures in the spastic upper limb aim to reduce tone by excising some branches of the involved peripheral motor nerves, at the point of entry of each motor ramus into the target muscle. In this prospective study, 42 patients with upper limb spasticity were treated by HSN for the muscles of elbow flexion, forearm pronation and wrist flexion and evaluated for their short-term results (average 6 months) and long-term outcomes (average 31 months). Results at both time points showed an effective reduction of the spastic tone, with no decrease of muscle strength in the operated spastic muscles.
