Synchronous Hürthle cell and medullary thyroid carcinomas.

Hürthle cell carcinoma (HCC) and medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTC) are uncommon histological subtypes of thyroid cancers, each accounting for around 3% of all thyroid cancers. A septuagenarian woman with a history of multiple primary cancer diagnoses presented with a growing left-sided neck lump. A diagnostic left thyroid lobectomy was performed, and pathological examination found two separate malignant foci: one HCC and an MTC.

A Rare Case of Eccrine Porocarcinoma of the Eyelid.

Background: To report a rare case of eyelid eccrine porocarcinoma and compare this to previous documented cases in the literature.

Main Observations: We report a case of an 86-year-old man who presented with three months' history of irritation in the right eye, who was found to have an irregular nodule on lower eyelid, which was later diagnosed as eccrine porocarcinoma (EPC). The lesion was excised and the defect repaired with Hughes flap.

Blood free morphine levels vary with concomitant alcohol and benzodiazepine use.

Aims: To record the concentration of morphine in post-mortem blood samples from fatalities arising directly from illicit drug abuse in Grampian, Scotland and to explore whether there is any difference in the morphine levels with co-existent drugs especially alcohol and benzodiazepines.

Methods: Drug-related deaths that had positive blood toxicology for morphine from the beginning of January 1995 until the end of December 2001 were identified from the database of toxicological data held in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and the data analysed in conjunction with the information in the files of the Forensic Medicine Unit, University of Aberdeen.

Results: One hundred and twenty-six cases were identified and consisted of 106 males and 20 females with an age range 17-51 (Median 26 years).
