Human saliva contains natural antimicrobial enzymes. In this in-vitro study, we evaluate the antimicrobial activity of a dentifrice containing a salivary enzyme complex (SEC) with xylitol versus a standard 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) dentifrice.

The development of low fouling membranes to minimize protein adsorption has relevance in various biomedical applications. Here, electrically neutral peptoids containing 2-methoxyethyl glycine (NMEG) side chains were attached to polysulfone hollow fiber membranes via polydopamine. The number of side chains and grafting density were varied to determine the effect on coating properties and the ability to prevent fouling.

Background: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) is an uncommon tumor that is challenging to diagnose on cytology due to morphologic overlap with other pancreatic neoplasms. Recently, putative diagnostic markers for SPN have been reported in the surgical pathology literature, with nuclear positivity for lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1) and androgen receptor (AR) identified in >90% and >80% of cases, respectively. In the current study, the authors sought to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of LEF1 and AR on SPN cytology specimens and available corresponding surgical resection specimens.

A 16-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with intermittent fevers and worsening abdominal pain of 5 weeks duration. She had a history of travel to a less developed country and exposure to possible infectious diseases. Abdominal imaging and blood tests revealed diffuse mesenteric lymphadenopathy, elevated transaminases, and elevation of inflammatory markers.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed 152 cases using fine-needle aspiration/needle core biopsy (FNA/CNB) to evaluate blood-related diseases, finding that 81.6% of cases resulted in a definitive diagnosis without needing further invasive procedures.
  • - The diagnostic accuracy was notably high in cases of suspected lymphoma relapse (95.4%) and in patients with immunodeficiency (100%), highlighting the effectiveness of FNA/CNB in these specific scenarios.
  • - Although FNA/CNB was generally effective, some cases required follow-up excisional biopsies, with a small number experiencing diagnostic discrepancies, indicating that while FNA/CNB is useful, it has limitations in complex pathological situations.

Objectives: To characterize the expression of SOX11 and TFE3 proteins in solid-pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) and their histologic mimickers.

Methods: Immunohistochemistry for SOX11, TFE3, and β-catenin was performed on 31 cases of surgically resected SPNs. Neuroendocrine tumors, acinar cell carcinomas, and pancreatoblastomas served as controls.

Background: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) of the pancreas are rare malignant tumors that can be sampled via endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). Although diagnosing SPNs can be straightforward in cases with a classic morphology and a typical immunoprofile, challenges can occur with morphologic variants or limited specimens. Recently, 2 immunohistochemical stains, SRY-related high-mobility group box 11 (SOX-11) and transcription factor E3 (TFE3), have been demonstrated to be highly sensitive and specific for SPNs in pancreatic resection specimens.

Context: - Molecular testing in indeterminate thyroid nodules is a rapidly evolving field with variable reported outcomes.

Objective: - To report our experience at a tertiary thyroid referral center with the Afirma Gene Expression Classifier (Veracyte, San Francisco, California) in repeat fine-needle aspirations of thyroid nodules with a previous indeterminate cytologic result.

Design: - Results of cytopathology and the Afirma test were collected from August 2013 to March 2015, as were diagnoses from surgical resection when performed.

Background: Molecular testing provides an important ancillary study for thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology. The nomenclature shift to "noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features" (NIFTP) will impact the performance of molecular tests. For the current study, the authors reviewed the performance of the Afirma gene-expression classifier (GEC) and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) targeted mutation panel tests in thyroid nodules that were subsequently diagnosed as NIFTP on surgical resection.

The purpose of this study was to determine the agreement of physiological parameters measured during exercise testing on 2 devices at established power outputs (POs). Ten trained male cyclists were recruited. The devices used for comparison were the Lode stationary bicycle ergometer (SBE) (Lode Excalibur) and the PowerTap Pro+ (BPT) (Saris Cycling Group) mobile ergometer.
