Performance of a multidisciplinary robotic surgery program at a university hospital (2012-2022).

Robotic-assisted surgery has become widely adopted for its ability to expand the indications for minimally invasive procedures. This technology aims to improve precision, accuracy, and outcomes while reducing complications, blood loss, and recovery time. Successful implementation of a robotic surgery program requires careful initial design and a focus on maintenance and expansion to maximize its benefits.

Feasibility of the set-up for the different approaches in robotic head and neck surgery with the Versius Surgical System.

The Versius Surgical System is a next generation soft-tissue robot with instrument and endoscope arms split into individual modules. Despite its similarities with previous systems, the basic changes in the design raise concerns relating to the feasibility of the set-up for the different approaches in robotic head and neck surgery procedures. We used a complete unit with a surgeon's console and four modules on a training mannequin to depict the different configurations in the operating room.

Access to indolines from primary phenylethylamines by an unexpected palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization process.

A new method for the preparation of 2,2-disubstituted indolines from 2-phenylethylamines was developed under Pd catalysis and PhI(OAc) as oxidant. Imines derived from 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde were formed to direct a C-H activation process. The resulting imines were also oxidized to the corresponding amides in the same Pd-catalyzed process to obtain the final indoline as a picolinamide.

Correction of Spinal Deformity on a Lung Transplantation Recipient.

Background: The coexistence of lung disease and scoliosis entails a dramatic situation. There are no papers reporting scoliosis surgery in patients who suffered lung transplantation.

Purpose: To describe the case of a patient who underwent surgery to correct progressive spinal deformity after two consecutive lung transplants.

Large cell neuroendocrine - Adenocarcinona mixed tumour of colon: Collision tumour with peculiar behaviour. What do we know about these tumours?

Introduction: Mixed glandular-endocrine carcinomas are rare tumours of gastrointestinal tract (MANEC). They are more frequent in stomach and hardly one hundred cases have been described in colon. According to Lewis, they are classified into collision (side by side pattern), composite (intermingled) or amphicrine (neuroendocrine and glandular features inside a same cell).

Neutral and ionic platinum compounds containing a cyclometallated chiral primary amine: synthesis, antitumor activity, DNA interaction and topoisomerase I-cathepsin B inhibition.

The synthesis and preliminary biological evaluation of neutral and cationic platinum derivatives of chiral 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine are reported, namely cycloplatinated neutral complexes [PtCl{(R or S)-NH(2)CH(CH(3))C(10)H(6)}(L)] [L = SOMe(2) ( 1-R or 1-S ), L = PPh(3) (2-R or 2-S), L = P(4-FC(6)H(4))(3) (3-R), L = P(CH(2))(3)N(3)(CH(2))(3) (4-R)], cycloplatinated cationic complexes [Pt{(R)-NH(2)CH(CH(3))C(10)H(6)}{L}]Cl [L = Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2) (5-R), L = (C(6)F(5))(2)PCH(2)CH(2)P(C(6)F(5))(2) (6-R)] and the Pt(ii) coordination compound trans-[PtCl(2){(R)-NH(2)CH(CH(3))C(10)H(6)}(2)] (7-R). The X-ray molecular structure of 7-R is reported. The cytotoxic activity against a panel of human adenocarcinoma cell lines (A-549 lung, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 breast, and HCT-116 colon), cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, DNA interaction, topoisomerase I and cathepsin B inhibition, and Pt cell uptake of the studied compounds are presented.

Diagnostic capacity of non-echo planar diffusion-weighted MRI in the detection of primary and recurrent cholesteatoma.

Introduction And Aims: the aim of this study was to determine the certainty of non-echo-planar imaging diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (non-EPI DW MRI) in the diagnosis of primary and recurrent cholesteatoma in patients with clinical suspicion of cholesteatoma, assessing the sensitivity and specificity of the test in both groups.

Methods: Seventy-five patients with clinical suspicion of cholesteatoma were included in our study. Forty-eight cases had primary suspicion of cholesteatoma and 27 cases had recurrent suspicion of cholesteatoma.

Transoral robotic approach for laryngeal schwannoma.

Background: The laryngeal schwannoma is a rare benign tumor of the larynx, most frequently found in the aryepiglottic fold, which can be rather bulky when diagnosed.

Methods: We present a primary transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for a laryngeal schwannoma and highlight the advantages of the robotic assistance.

Results: Thanks to the high-definition 3D dynamic vision and an improved freedom of movement, it is possible to accurately accomplish surgical tasks that previously were much more complex or even unfeasible through a minimally invasive approach, potentially minimizing the surgical damage.

Catalytic C-H activation of phenylethylamines or benzylamines and their annulation with allenes.

Tetrahydro-3-benzazepines and tetrahydroisoquinolines are synthesized in one step from allenes and phenylethylamines or benzylamines, respectively. Mechanistically, it is assumed that activation of a C-H bond of an aromatic ring with Pd(II) occurs, directed by the primary amine, leading to the formation of a palladacycle into which an allene then undergoes insertion. The resulting π-allyl intermediate cyclizes to the products by an intramolecular allylic alkylation.

A kinetico-mechanistic study on the C-H bond activation of primary benzylamines; cooperative and solid-state cyclopalladation on dimeric complexes.

The cyclometallation reactions of dinuclear μ-acetato complexes of the type [Pd(AcO)(μ-AcO)L]2 (L = 4-RC6H4CH2NH2, R = H, Cl, F, CF3), a process found to occur readily even in the solid state, have been studied from a kinetico-mechanistic perspective. Data indicate that the dinuclear acetato bridged derivatives are excellent starting materials to activate carbon-hydrogen bonds in a facile way. In all cases the established concerted ambiphilic proton abstraction by a coordinated acetato ligand has been proved.

Cyclopalladated primary amines: a preliminary study of antiproliferative activity through apoptosis induction.

Twelve cyclometallated palladium(II) complexes containing primary aromatic amines [benzylamine (a), (R)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine (b) and 2-phenylaniline (c)] as anionic bidentate (C,N)(-) ligands have been evaluated against a panel of human adenocarcinoma cell lines (A549 lung, MDA-MB231 and MCF7 breast, and the cisplatin resistant HCT116 colon). The results revealed a remarkable antiproliferative activity of the triphenylphosphane mononuclear compounds 3-4 (series a, b, c) and the best inhibition was provided for 3c and 4c with the 2-phenylaniline ligand and a six membered chelate ring. Interestingly, 3c and 4c were 14 and 19 times more potent than cisplatin for the inhibition of the cisplatin resistant HCT116 human adenocarcinoma cell line, respectively.

Introduction. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) radical tonsillectomy is an emerging minimally invasive surgical procedure for the treatment of cancer of the tonsil. The detailed surgical technique and claims for its reproducibility have been previously published.

Zinc and copper changes in serum and urine after aerobic endurance and muscular strength exercise.

Aim: The role of zinc and copper has been shown essential in the scope of physical exercise. The outcomes of the studies about changes in the concentrations of these elements in blood, in physical effort situations, are sometimes discordant and seem to be related with the type of the exercise done. The purpose of the study was to determine the changes of zinc and copper in serum and urine produced by two kinds of exercise, designing two tests involving different types of physical exertion, which have been defined as aerobic endurance (AE) and muscular strength (MS).

Influence of atmospheric pressure on the incidence of spontaneous pneumothorax.

Background: This study analyses the relationship between the incidence of idiopathic spontaneous pneumothorax (ISP) and atmospheric pressure (AP).

Methods: A total of 288 cases of ISP were included, 229 men and 59 women. The AP of the day of diagnosis, of the 3 prior days and the monthly average was registered.

Perioperative chemotherapy for resectable gastroesophageal cancer: a single-center experience.

Backgrounds: Multimodal treatment for locally advanced gastric cancer has been reported to improve disease-free survival when compared to surgery alone. We aimed to clarify the efficacy and safety of perioperative chemotherapy for locally advanced gastric cancer patients treated in daily clinical practice.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with locally advanced gastric cancer were treated with perioperative chemotherapy and surgery.

Pt(II) complexes with (N,N') or (C,N,E)(-) (E=N,S) ligands: cytotoxic studies, effect on DNA tertiary structure and structure-activity relationships.

The cytotoxic activity of two series of platinum(II) complexes containing the polyfunctional imines R(1)-CHN-R(2) [R(1)=phenyl or ferrocenyl unit and R(2)=(CH2)n-CH2-NMe2 where n=1 or 2) (1 and 2) or C6H4-2-SMe (3)] acting as a bidentate (N,N') (4-7) or terdentate [C(phenyl or ferrocenyl),N,N'](-) (8-10) or [C(ferrocenyl),N,S](-) ligand (11) in front of A549 lung, MDA-MB231 breast and HCT116 colon human adenocarcinoma cell lines is reported. The results reveal that most of the platinum(II) complexes are active against the three assayed lines and compounds 6, 7 and the platinacycles 10 and 11 exhibit a remarkable antiproliferative activity, even greater than cisplatin itself, in the cisplatin resistant HCT116 human cancer cell line. Electrophoretic DNA migration studies showed that most of them modify the DNA tertiary structure in a similar way as the reference cisplatin.

Management of oropharyngeal Dysphagia in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer.

On considering a function-preserving treatment for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, swallowing is a capital issue. For most of the patients, achieving an effective and safe deglutition will mark the difference between a functional and a dysfunctional outcome. We present an overview of the management of dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients.

[Effect of vitamin D deficiency on hypocalcaemia after total thyroidectomy due to benign goitre].

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship between preoperative serum levels of vitamin D and postoperative hypocalcaemia after total thyroidectomy.

Material And Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted on 113 patients treated by total thyroidectomy due to benign disease. Preoperative vitamin D serum levels and postoperative albumin-corrected calcium and parathormone (PTH) levels were determined.
