Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate which oral device, an occlusal splint (OS) or a mandibular advancement splint (MAS), provided better sleep quality and comfort for individuals with sleep bruxism (SB) and their relationship with reduced jaw muscle activity (RMMA).
  • Data from 21 subjects indicated that while the OS was slightly more comfortable and resulted in better self-reported sleep quality, the MAS was more effective in significantly reducing RMMA activity.
  • The findings suggest that comfort from the oral device impacts sleep quality in SB patients, but the MAS may be more effective for reducing bruxism-related muscle activity despite having slightly less comfort than the OS.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of oral appliances (OAs) on sleep bruxism (SB), focusing on heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of autonomic nervous system activity during sleep.
  • A retrospective analysis of 21 participants indicates that using OAs significantly reduces rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) during sleep but does not change HRV parameters.
  • The findings suggest that while OAs help mitigate the damaging effects of SB, their action does not directly affect the underlying mechanisms of SB.

Knowledge of the risk factors for implant osseointegration is essential for clinical decision-making and optimizing treatment success. This clinical report presents a rare case of implant failure in a patient who received intravitreal injections of a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. Following CARE guidelines, the report presents a case rehabilitated with a mandibular 2-implant overdenture using the immediate-loading protocol and standard procedures.

Objectives: To examine the impact of adding a third midline implant with stud attachment to a mandibular two-implant overdenture on patient-oriented outcomes.

Methods: In this pre-post design clinical trial, following the standard procedures, mandibular two-implant overdentures of 17 edentulous individuals (61.9 ± 6.

Purpose: To describe the pattern of partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) designs over a 30-year period in a cohort of patients from the Université de Montréal, Faculty of Dentistry and to examine the effect of this design in PRDP complaints and the required treatment in a subsample of the patients' cohort.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective descriptive study, 1380 PRDP laboratory prescriptions (1980-2009) and 131 PRDP clinical complaint forms (2006-2008) from the archives of the undergraduate prosthodontics clinic of Université de Montréal were selected. Data on type of PRDPs, design, PRDP-related complaints, and the need for treatment were collected.

Objective: To provide 2-year clinical- and patient-oriented data with regard to mandibular overdenture assisted by 2 immediately loaded unsplinted implants.

Material And Methods: In this pre-post design, Phase-I clinical trial, 18 edentate individuals (62.4±7.

Objectives: To examine patients' expectations, the level of satisfaction, and the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) with regard to the implants' immediate loading protocol (ILP) in edentate individuals.

Methods: This pilot trial used a pre-post design to assess patient-centered outcomes in 18 edentate individuals (mean age 62.4 ± 7.

This study sought to develop a database in the field of removable prosthodontics by using a participatory action research method. Data collection consisted of a comprehensive literature review, focus-group discussions, and interviews. Applying action research methods ensures consideration of the needs, perspectives, and expertise of academia in the design and implementation of an evidence/ research-based patient record, and academic educators are well placed to conduct such research.

In this case report, we describe the successful long-term treatment of a patient with dental agenesis. The initial treatment plan included an orthodontic phase to provide adequate space for replacing missing lateral incisors with implants. However, because of some complications encountered after 2 years of orthodontic treatment, a revised treatment plan was considered to achieve functional and esthetic goals.

Objectives: To evaluate the level of association between patients' denture satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in edentate patients, and to identify the determinants of satisfaction that best predict OHRQoL. The effects of time and treatment type were also assessed.

Methods: Data from 255 edentate elders who participated in a randomised clinical trial were used.

Background: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a neurological motor complication eventually arising in one-third of patients chronically exposed to antipsychotic drugs. Some orodental peripheral factors have been reported to influence TD.

Objective: To measure orodental factors such as temporomandibular joint function, static occlusal contacts, and denture condition, and attempt correlations with orofacial TD intensity.

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the evidence on the occurrence of denture stomatitis (DS) and potential risk factors in patients wearing partial removable dental prostheses (RDPs).

Materials And Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched and complemented by manual searching. Outcome measures were the presence of DS in patients wearing partial RDPs and an assessment of associated risk factors.

Objectives: The superiority of mandibular two-implant overdentures (IODs) over conventional complete dentures (CDs) in terms of quality of life is still questioned. Furthermore, the stability and magnitude of the treatment effect over time remain uncertain. This follow-up study aimed to determine the stability and magnitude of the effect of IODs on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL).

Methods: Twelve subjects aged 27.6 ± 2.

Background: Anatomical changes associated with edentulism are thought to disturb seniors' sleep.

Objectives: (1) To determine sleep quality and daytime sleepiness of edentulous elders. (2) To examine the association between oral health-related quality of life and sleep quality.

Unlabelled: Sense of coherence (SOC) is an individual-based coping characteristic and believed to influence a person's ability to adapt to life stressors, such as edentulism and using complete denture. Thus, SOC may mediate the effect of prosthetic treatment on quality of life.

Purpose: The objective of this experimental study was to assess the efficacy and safety of a reinforced adjustable mandibular advancement appliance (MAA) on sleep bruxism (SB) activity compared to baseline and to a mandibular occlusal splint (MOS) in order to offer an alternative to patients with both tooth grinding and respiratory disorders during sleep.

Materials And Methods: Twelve subjects (mean age: 26.0 +/- 1.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine systematically the data published on the efficacy of mandibular implant-retained overdentures from the patient's perspective.

Material And Methods: Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and The Cochrane Systematic Reviews Database were searched and complemented by hand searching. All randomized-controlled trials published in English or French up to April 2007 were included, in which conventional dentures and mandibular implant overdentures in adult edentulous individuals were compared.

Many current studies of prosthodontic treatment use patient-based outcomes. Traditionally, these outcomes are measured using quantitative methods. However, qualitative research methods can provide important information that cannot be found using quantitative techniques.

The etiology of denture stomatitis remains controversial. Trauma due to unstable dentures has been suggested as an etiological factor. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that the prevalence of denture stomatitis is reduced when mandibular dentures are stabilized by implants.

Purpose: Switching from smooth to myceliated colonies, a virulent trait of Candida albicans, may be implicated in Candida-associated denture stomatitis. The purpose of this study was to verify the relationship between the presence of denture stomatitis and the frequency of myceliated colonies of C. albicans isolates in denture wearers.
