Background: Several studies have suggested that laparoscopy might confer an oncological advantage in patients undergoing surgery for colonic cancer. A decreased inflammatory and angiogenic response has been proposed. This study compared the local and systemic inflammatory and angiogenic responses after open and laparoscopic surgery for colonic cancer.

The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and esophagogastric junction (gastric cardia) has risen rapidly over the past three decades in the United States and northern Europe. This increase had been most dramatic among White males. The majority of these cancers arise from Barrett's esophagus.

However, it brings about a series of changes in calcium and vitamin D metabolism and an increase in resorption which lead to a loss of bone mass.
Aim: The objective of this study is to compare sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) as regards loss of bone mass using bone densitometry and bone remodelling markers.
Introduction: The popular belief advocates the use of sitz (sitting) baths with cold water for the treatment of acute anal pain, but clinical practice guides recommend the use of hot water for its known effect on the at-rest anal pressure.
Aim: The objective of the study was to examine the analgesic effect on the quality of life, manometer data and clinical progress, of the two temperatures in sitz baths in patients with anal pain.
Material And Methods: A randomised clinical trial on patients with acute anal pain due to haemorrhoids or anal fissures, divided into Group 1: Sitz baths with water at a temperature of less than 15 degrees C, and Group 2: Baths with a water temperature above 30 degrees C.
Introduction: The aim of this paper is to assess the learning curve on compliance to the application of a multimodal rehabilitation program (MMRP) protocol and patient recovery after elective colorectal surgery.
Material And Methods: A comparative prospective study of 3 consecutive cohorts of 100 patients (P1, P2 and P3) who had colonic or rectal surgery. The same MMRP protocol was applied in all cases.
The temperature dependence of the crystalline phase of (nitrosyl)(tetraphenylporphinato)cobalt(II), [Co(TPP)(NO)], has been explored over the temperature range of 100-250 K by X-ray diffraction experiments. The crystalline complex is found in the tetragonal crystal system at higher temperatures and in the triclinic crystal system at lower temperatures. In the tetragonal system, the axial ligand is strongly disordered, with the molecule having crystallographically required 4/m symmetry, leading to eight distinct positions of the single nitrosyl oxygen atom.

Treatment is controversial, although surgery is used in the majority of cases. The aims of this study were to determine the incidence of perforations due to colonoscopy in our hospital and to find out the results of the treatment options used.

The diagnosis of alterations in bowel habit could be of interest for the management of this clinical disorder. The aim of the study was to study the relationship between fecal incontinence prevalence and alteration of bowel habit in patients of a metropolitan area of Barcelona.

Method: A cross-sectional multicentre study was undertaken.
Although hypertension is a major risk factor for cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and is highly prevalent in African Americans, little is known about how blood pressure (BP) affects brain-behavior relationships in this population. In predominantly Caucasian populations, high BP is associated with alterations in frontal-subcortical white matter and in executive functioning aspects of cognition. We investigated associations among BP, brain structure, and neuropsychological functioning in 52 middle-older-age African Americans without diagnosed history of CVD.

Material And Methods: A literature study which included all therapy articles published between 2005 and 2008. All kinds of clinical designs were considered, excluding editorials, review articles, letters to editor and experimental studies.
Aim: Evidence supporting outpatient treatment with oral antibiotics in patients with uncomplicated diverticulitis is limited. Our aim was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an ambulatory treatment protocol in patients with uncomplicated acute diverticulitis.
Method: All patients diagnosed with uncomplicated diverticulitis based on abdominal computed tomography findings from June 2003 to December 2008 were considered for outpatient treatment.
Background: Recent reports have suggested that anastomotic leakage is associated with greater rates of tumor recurrence and cancer-specific mortality after surgery for colorectal cancer. The impact of postoperative intra-abdominal infection on long-term oncologic results, however, is still controversial, and no direct causal relationship has been found between both processes. Our aim was to investigate the influence of postoperative intraabdominal infection on angiogenesis and tumor growth in an animal model of colon cancer.

This investigation and subsequent contrast-enhanced computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and endoscopic US with fine needle aspiration (FNA) revealed a 40 mm well-circumscribed mass in the uncinate process of the pancreas. Findings were suggestive of a mucinous or solid-cystic pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas, although other lesions such as a non-functioning neuroendocrine tumor could not be ruled out.

Material And Method: Data were analysed on 133 patients with faecal incontinence. Those in whom anal sphincter lesions were detected by endoanal ultrasound are described and their corresponding scores according to Starck classification calculated.
Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is defined by the presence of neurophysiological alterations, with an important impact in the quality of life, in the risk of performing dangerous tasks as leading cars and heavy machinery and increases risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy. MHE is present in a third of cirrhotic depending on liver function. Psychometric and neurophysiologic test are used in the diagnosis of MHE, mainly PHES (Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score) battery, electroencephalogram, evoked potentials and measurement of the critical flicker frequency.

This entity has mainly been described in patients with diabetes type 1 and, to a much lesser extent, in those with other endocrine disorders. We describe a case of diabetic mastopathy associated with diabetes mellitus type 2, which showed a rapid clinical course.

Methods: A total of 314 relaparotomies in 254 patients were performed between February 2004 and February 2008. We analyzed data about past medical history, first operation, as well as clinical and biochemical parameters previous to reoperation.
Introduction: Faecal incontinence is a high prevalence disease in the general population. The aims of this study were to analyse which severity grading systems of faecal incontinence are used in Spain and to find out if there are differences in their use among specialists who manage these patients.
Material And Methods: A postal questionnaire survey was sent to all hospitals of the National Health Service in Spain in order to study the attitudes and opinions of general surgery and gastroenterology specialists regarding the clinical evaluation of patients with faecal incontinence.
Background: stool type represents an important semiologic part of medical interviews. The Bristol Scale Stool Form is a clinical tool to evaluate stool consistency and form. The aim of this study was to translate and adapt the Bristol Scale Stool Form into Spanish.
