However, these responses are varied, and it is challenging to predict how elevated CO (eCO) will affect a particular plant-pathogen interaction. We investigated how eCO may influence disease development and responses to diverse pathogens in the major oilseed crop, soybean.

Anti-Apartheid at the periphery: a case study of grassroots activism in Dundee, 1967-1990.

The histories of the global anti-apartheid struggle, and particularly the British Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM), have predominantly been examined through a transnational and national prism, creating an inaccurate impression of a highly centralized and homogeneous movement. We argue, however, that refining the analysis to focus on the local setting reveals a more complex and diverse movement, which has not been fully captured in the existing scholarship. Using Dundee as a case study, this article charts the emergence, character, and evolution of anti-apartheid sentiment and activity in this small, peripheral industrial Scottish city.

Heterogeneity in Health Outcomes in the Strong Hearts, Healthy Communities-2.0 Multilevel Intervention in a Community-Randomized Trial: An Exploratory Study of Moderators.

Background/objectives: Multilevel interventions have demonstrated efficacy in improving obesity and other related health outcomes. However, heterogeneity in individual responses indicates the need to identify the factors associated with responses and non-responses to multilevel interventions. The objective of this report is to identify the potential sources of heterogeneity through the exploration of the moderation effects of participant characteristics (sociodemographic and baseline physical/mental health) in the Strong Hearts, Healthy Communities-2.

Who is in Our STEM Courses and How do We Know? Student Self-Descriptions, Intersectionality and Inclusive Education.

The aim of inclusive education is to provide a supportive space for students from every background. The theory of intersectionality suggests that multiple identities intersect within social spaces to construct specific positionalities. To support the heterogeneity of all students, there is a need to understand who is in our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses and how we would go about assessing this.

The fungal gut microbiota in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis.

Evidence suggests that the gut microbiome may play a role in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the majority of the studies have focused on gut bacterial communities; none have examined the fungal microbiota (mycobiota) in persons with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS). We examined the gut mycobiota in persons with and without POMS through a cross-sectional examination of the gut mycobiota from 46 participants' stool samples (three groups: 18 POMS, 13 acquired monophasic demyelinating syndromes [monoADS], and 15 unaffected controls).

Importance: Mentorship is increasingly recognized as a critical part of training across the spectrum of trainees. While explored more in-depth in the literature of other medical specialties, mentorship remains a nascent topic in the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) literature.

Implementation of a High-sensitivity Troponin Assay for Adult Patients Who Present to the Emergency Department With Chest Pain: The Role of Clinical Decision Support.

Background: The objective of this study was to assess the health outcomes for patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with cardiac chest pain after the implementation of an accelerated diagnostic protocol using a high-sensitivity troponin assay (hs-TnI).

Methods: This prospective before-after cohort study used population-based linked health administrative data for adult patients who presented to a Canadian urban ED with chest pain of suspected cardiac origin over a 2-year study period. The primary outcome was ED length of stay (LOS).

How Does Deep Neural Network-Based Noise Reduction in Hearing Aids Impact Cochlear Implant Candidacy?

Background/objectives: Adult hearing-impaired patients qualifying for cochlear implants typically exhibit less than 60% sentence recognition under the best hearing aid conditions, either in quiet or noisy environments, with speech and noise presented through a single speaker. This study examines the influence of deep neural network-based (DNN-based) noise reduction on cochlear implant evaluation.

Methods: Speech perception was assessed using AzBio sentences in both quiet and noisy conditions (multi-talker babble) at 5 and 10 dB signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) through one loudspeaker.

Image use in aphasia rehabilitation: Practices of speech-language pathologists in South Africa and international contexts.

Purpose: The study aimed to explore speech-language pathologists' practices regarding image selection and use in the treatment of people living with aphasia. Images are widely utilised with people living with aphasia, however, supporting their communication optimally remains challenging.

Method: Ninety-two speech-language pathologists from South Africa, Australia, USA, and the UK completed a custom-designed online survey.

'The upside-down' healthcare professional students' experiences of delirium: an all-Ireland focus group study.

Background: Delirium is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterised by an acute state of confusion, with a substantial impact on medical inpatients. Despite its growing recognition as a global healthcare concern, delirium remains underdiagnosed, partly due to a lack of awareness among healthcare professionals. The aim of this study was to explore how healthcare professional students experience caring for individuals experiencing delirium, the influence of their current pre-registration healthcare education, and importance of interprofessional teamwork in their role.

The Professional Identity of STEM Faculty as Instructors of Course-based Research Experiences.

The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who implement a CRE within an established iREC and to explore how this identity contributes to the success of these programs.

Long-term co-circulation of multiple arboviruses in southeast Australia revealed by xeno-monitoring and viral whole-genome sequencing.

Arbovirus surveillance of wild-caught mosquitoes is an affordable and sensitive means of monitoring virus transmission dynamics at various spatial-temporal scales, and emergence and re-emergence during epidemic and interepidemic periods. A variety of molecular diagnostics for arbovirus screening of mosquitoes (known as xeno-monitoring) are available, but most provide limited information about virus diversity. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based screening coupled with RNA sequencing is an increasingly affordable and sensitive pipeline for integrating complete viral genome sequencing into surveillance programs.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this cross-sectional study, the top 200 posts on an image-based social media platform tagged with #tonguetie, #liptie, or #buccaltie were collected using a de novo account on March 27, 2023.

Background: Indices of tumor heterogeneity on somatostatin receptor PET/CT scans may potentially serve as predictive biomarkers of treatment efficacy in neuroendocrine tumor (NET) patients undergoing [Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE PRRT.

Methods: NET patients who underwent [Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE therapy at the University of Iowa from August 2018 to February 2021 were retrospectively evaluated. Radiomic features on the pre-PRRT somatostatin receptor PET/CT were evaluated using a custom MIM Software® LesionID workflow.

Improved Zika virus plaque assay using Vero/TMPRSS2 cell line.

Unlabelled: Plaque assay is the gold standard for the quantification of viable cytopathic viruses like Zika virus (ZIKV). Some strains of ZIKV produce plaques that are very difficult to accurately visualize and count on the commonly used Vero cell line. From data generated in our lab, we became curious if Vero/TMPRSS2 cells may be a better alternative; therefore, we compared the plaque forming units of two strains of ZIKV on Vero/TMPRSS2 cells to those produced by Vero cells.

Identifying and Removing Fraudulent Attempts to Enroll in a Human Health Improvement Intervention Trial in Rural Communities.

Using the internet to recruit participants into research trials is effective but can attract high numbers of fraudulent attempts, particularly via social media. We drew upon the previous literature to rigorously identify and remove fraudulent attempts when recruiting rural residents into a community-based health improvement intervention trial. Our objectives herein were to describe our dynamic process for identifying fraudulent attempts, quantify the fraudulent attempts identified by each action, and make recommendations for minimizing fraudulent responses.

Thromboembolic complication is common in severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19), leading to an investigation into the presence of prothrombotic antibodies akin to those found in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). In a study of samples from 130 hospitalized patients collected 3.6 days after COVID-19 diagnosis, 80% had IgG antibodies recognizing complexes of heparin and platelet factor 4 (PF4/H), and 41% had antibodies inducing PF4-dependent P-selectin expression in CpG-treated normal platelets.

Informed consent in assisted reproductive technology: Implications for pediatric clinicians.

After conceiving through assisted reproductive technologies (ART), parents may present to their pediatrician with concerns related to their child's neurodevelopment, including whether their child's health may be related to their use of ART. Pediatricians may be unfamiliar with the ART process and what the families endured up to this point, resulting in difficulty counseling parents through these discussions. Before presentation to the pediatrician, parents have undergone extensive evaluation with reproductive endocrinologists.

NSW cannabis medicines advisory service retrospective enquiry analysis to inform clinical guidance resource development.

Background: An innovative New South Wales government funded statewide Cannabis Medicines Advisory Service (CMAS) operated between January 2018 and June 2022. The service provided comprehensive patient-specific and evidence-based information to support health professionals in prescribing and patient care decisions. This study aimed to describe real-world data collected by CMAS.

Background: In all health-care systems, decisions need to be made regarding allocation of available resources. Evidence is needed for these decisions, especially in low-income countries. We aimed to estimate how health-care resources provided by the public sector were used in Malawi during 2015-19 and to estimate the effects of strengthening health-care services.

Analysis of Tubular NF Plants in Scotland Indicates That Summer Temperatures and Redox-Sensitive Elements Are Correlated with Membrane Biofouling and Shortened Useful Life.

We investigate the effects of seasonal variations in water composition and temperature on the performance of two full-scale drinking water treatment plants in Scotland, equipped with tubular cellulose acetate nanofiltration membranes. Multiple environmental and water quality parameters, recorded over a 4.5-year period, were correlated against membrane permeance, cleaning frequency, and useful life.
