Assessment of Fermented Soybean Meal on Infection in Neonatal Turkey Poults.

This study's objective was to evaluate the effect of the fermented soybean meal (FSBM) on (ST) to turkey poults using two models of infection. In the prophylactic model, one-day-old turkeys were randomly allocated to one of four different groups ( = 30 turkeys/group): (1) Control group, (2) FSBM group, (3) Control group challenged with ST (Control + ST), and (4) FSBM group challenged with ST (FSBM + ST). On day 9 of age, all poults were orally challenged with 10 colony forming units (CFU) ST and 24 h post-inoculation, intestinal samples were collected to determine ST recovery and morphometric analysis.

The redemption and contamination research form: exploring relations with narrative identity, personality traits, response styles, and life satisfaction.

Narrative identity is typically assessed by collecting participants' autobiographical scenes and then coding these stories for themes including redemption (negative beginning, positive ending) and contamination (positive beginning, negative ending). Complimenting this approach, we introduce a self-report measure capturing the degree to which individuals explicitly view their lives and social worlds in redemptive and contaminated ways - the Redemption and Contamination Research Form (RCRF). In Studies 1 and 2, participants completed the RCRF and a measure of life satisfaction.

Although age itself is not considered an independent risk factor for periodontal disease, there may be complicating factors associated with ageing that impact upon the planning and delivery of care.

Introduction: More than 30 million adults are released from incarceration globally each year. Many experience complex physical and mental health problems, and are at markedly increased risk of preventable mortality. Despite this, evidence regarding the global epidemiology of mortality following release from incarceration is insufficient to inform the development of targeted, evidence-based responses.

This study is the first systematic review of theories employed to explain why someone might kill their intimate partner. This review used rigorous methods to locate and synthesize literature that described explanatory theories of IPH perpetration.

Evidence of non-economic indicators as markers of success for youth in youth employability programs: Insights from a South African study.

Evaluation studies of youth employment programs prioritize employment and earnings outcomes and use these indicators to determine what labor market interventions are most successful. Evidence from pre and post data of a cluster randomized controlled longitudinal study, consisting of 1 892 youth between 18 and 25 years who participated in Youth Employability Programs (YEPs) in South Africa, confirms the importance of the inclusion of non-economic indicators to measure success for youth. This study provides evidence that non-economic markers of success such as job-search resilience, self-esteem, self-efficacy and future orientation are potentially important in the transition to employment in the longer term and points to the need for more evaluations that use these markers to predict youth's success in employment.

Infection with HIV is a chronic condition that requires daily medication to suppress viral replication. With appropriate treatment, people living with HIV have a life expectancy approaching that of the general population. However, they are at increased risk for comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, renal disease, type 2 diabetes, neurologic conditions, and cancers, often with worse outcomes than in patients without HIV.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, multi-institutional study from 8/2015-6/2017 within the Veterans Affairs (VA) System including veterans who underwent general, vascular, or thoracic surgery.

Imaging and clinical features of a true gastrogastric intussusception in a dog.

An 18-month-old male mixed breed dog was evaluated for acute vomiting and hematemesis. Clinical signs and initial radiographic findings shared commonalities with reported cases of pylorogastric intussusception in dogs. However, unlike previously reported cases, additional imaging [including ultrasound and computed tomography (CT)] revealed invagination of the gastric fundus into the gastric body, consistent with true gastrogastric intussusception.

Isolation and Characterization of Ice-Binding Proteins from Higher Plants.

The characterization of ice-binding proteins (IBPs) from plants can involve many techniques, a few of which are presented here. Chief among these methods are tests for ice recrystallization inhibition, an activity characteristic of plant IBPs. Two related procedures are described, both of which can be used to demonstrate and quantify ice-binding activity.

Urothelial malignancies are commonly treated with platinum-based therapies. Newer trials have tested antimitotic therapies such as enfortumab vedotin as viable treatment therapy for refractory malignany. Enfortumab vedotin targets nectin-4, a member of a family of calcium-dependent, immunoglobulin-like adhesion molecules found in adherens junctions and expressed in various epithelial malignancies, including bladder, breast, lung, ovarian, head/neck, and esophageal cancers.

Inflammation and salt in young adults: the African-PREDICT study.

Purpose: Low-grade inflammation and a diet high in salt are both established risk factors for cardiovascular disease. High potassium (K) intake was found to counter increase in blood pressure due to high salt intake and may potentially also have protective anti-inflammatory effects. To better understand these interactions under normal physiological conditions, we investigated the relationships between 22 inflammatory mediators with 24-h urinary K in young healthy adults stratified by low, medium and high salt intake (salt tertiles).

Methods: This is a five-year observational study (January 2012-June 2017). Two hundred twenty-seven VLBW infants were assessed in the neurodevelopmental clinic between Jan 2012 and June 2017.
