Objective: To describe composite 30-day postoperative complication rates among patients undergoing hysterectomy during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to determine baseline and postoperative mental health symptoms, levels of social support, and socioeconomic status and their association with hysterectomy outcomes.
Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study at eight centers across the United States enrolled patients who underwent minimally invasive hysterectomy for benign indications during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients completed preoperative and postoperative surveys assessing mental health (PHQ-9 [Patient Health Questionnaire]), social support (MOS-SS [Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey]), and socioeconomic status (Hollingshead Index [Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Socioeconomic Status]).
Background: Patients who do not achieve positive outcomes with custom ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA) foot orthoses will often be escalated to other services for treatment, which may include surgery.
Objective: This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of custom hard-shell 3D-printed foot orthoses for patients who did not respond to treatment with custom EVA foot orthoses and were being considered for treatment escalation.
Design: An eight-week clinical evaluation and a two-year review of relevant medical records.
One of the main causes of implant failure and revision surgery in total hip replacement (THR) is aseptic loosening often caused by the accumulation of wear debris arising between the contact surfaces of the acetabular cup and femoral head during activities of daily living (ADL's). However, limited information is available regarding the contact force pathways between these two surfaces during specific ADL's. In this study, through musculoskeletal modelling, we aimed to estimate the orientation of the hip contact force pathway on the acetabular cup.

The method of foot shape capture used to produce insoles varies throughout orthotic services. This trial aims to investigate the effectiveness of two common shape-capture techniques on patient-reported outcomes in people who require insoles for a foot or ankle pathology.

The scale of this effect is of interest for both pre-clinical device testing and for pre-operative surgical planning. This work aimed to evaluate (1) patient variation in dynamic cup orientation; (2) whether walking speed was a candidate proxy measure for the dynamic cup orientation; and (3) the relationships between dynamic cup orientation angles and planar pelvic angles.

Restrictive opioid prescribing has been implemented in other surgical specialties to combat the risk for opioid misuse and diversion. The impact of this practice in the urogynecologic patient population is unknown.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with gynecologic cancer in the National Cancer Database during 2017-2020 were included. For the first aim, incidence rate ratios were calculated to compare gynecologic cancer diagnosis in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic to the three years prior, and factors associated with a reduction in diagnosis were identified.
Despite squatting being important in strength training and rehabilitation, few studies have investigated motor unit (MU) behaviour. This study explored the MU behaviour of vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) during the concentric and eccentric phases of a squat exercise performed at two speeds. Twenty-two participants had surface dEMG sensors attached over VM and VL, and IMUs recorded thigh and shank angular velocities.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pudendal nerve block on postoperative pain control and opioid consumption after vaginal surgery.
Importance: Discharge to home after surgery has been recognized as a determinant of long-term survival and is a common concern in the elderly population.
Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the incidence and risk factors for nonhome discharge in patients undergoing major surgery for pelvic organ prolapse.
Study Design: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database from 2010 to 2018.
Background: Haemophilia is an X-linked recessive genetic disorder characterised by bleeding within soft tissue and joints. The ankle is disproportionally affected by haemarthropathy when compared to the elbows and knees; reported as the most affected joints in patients with haemophilia. Despite advances in treatment, patients still report ongoing pain and disability, however, the impact has not been evaluated, nor has the effect on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) or foot and ankle patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

Changes in treatment recommendations have highlighted the burden of moderate haemophilia with a subset of patients with a severe bleeding phenotype. The ankle joint is disproportionally affected by ankle haemarthropathy however the impact has not been evaluated in moderate haemophilia, nor the effect on health related quality of life (HRQoL) or foot and ankle outcomes.

Previous studies have compared the kinematic output of different multi-segment foot models, however, no study has explored if different multi-segment foot models detect similar kinematic changes when wearing a foot orthoses. The aim of this study was to compare the ability of two different multi-segment foot models to detect kinematic changes at the hindfoot and forefoot during the single and double support phases of gait when wearing a foot orthosis.

Methods: Using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database, we identified outpatient FPRS performed 2011-2016. Isolated hysterectomy without concurrent prolapse repair was excluded.
Introduction: Haemarthrosis is a clinical feature of haemophilia leading to haemarthropathy. The ankle joint is most commonly affected, resulting in significant pain, disability and a reduction in health-related quality of life. Footwear and orthotic devices are effective in other diseases that affect the foot and ankle, such as rheumatoid arthritis, but little is known about their effect in haemophilia.

Objective: We sought to investigate racial and ethnic disparities in surgical interventions and complications among patients undergoing endometriosis surgery across the United States.
Study Design: We performed a retrospective cohort study of American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data from 2010 to 2018 identifying International Classification of Diseases, Ninth/Tenth Revision codes for endometriosis We compared procedures, surgical routes (laparoscopy vs laparotomy), and 30-day postoperative complications by race and ethnicity.
Objectives: To report the 12-month prevalence of joint bleeds from the National Haemophilia Database (NHD) and Haemtrack, a patient-reported online treatment diary and concurrent joint disease status using the haemophilia joint health score (HJHS) at individual joint level, in children and adults with severe haemophilia A and B (HA/HB) without a current inhibitor.
Design: A 2018 retrospective database study of NHD from which 2238 cases were identified, 463 patients had fully itemised HJHS of whom 273 were compliant in recording treatment using Haemtrack.
Setting: England, Wales and Scotland, UK.
Female Pelvic Med Reconstr Surg
September 2021
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the risk of complications associated with obliterative surgery versus reconstructive surgery in elderly and frail patients undergoing surgery for pelvic organ prolapse.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study utilizing the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database from 2010 to 2017. We compared characteristics and perioperative complications in patients aged 80 years or older who underwent obliterative surgery versus reconstructive surgery.
Background: Postoperative urinary retention is common after female pelvic reconstructive surgery. Alpha receptor antagonists can improve dysfunctional voiding by relaxing the bladder outlet and may be effective in reducing the risk of postoperative urinary retention.
Objective: This study aimed to determine whether tamsulosin is effective in preventing postoperative urinary retention in women undergoing surgery for pelvic organ prolapse.

Objective: To evaluate national trends in major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in female pelvic reconstructive surgery (FPRS).
Methods: Data from the National Inpatient Sample was used to identify women undergoing FPRS between 2012 and 2016. Demographic, procedural, and comorbidity data were collected.
Introduction And Hypothesis: It is predicted that the number of women aged 80 years or older will more than triple by 2050. In the US, women have a 13% lifetime risk of undergoing pelvic organ prolapse surgery. Our aim was to compare the perioperative outcomes following various reconstructive approaches for apical prolapse surgery in the very elderly.
