We present a mechanism for producing a cosmologically significant relic density of one or more sterile neutrinos. This scheme invokes two steps: First, a population of "heavy" sterile neutrinos is created by scattering-induced decoherence of active neutrinos. Second, this population is transferred, via sterile neutrino self-interaction-mediated scatterings and decays, to one or more lighter mass (∼10  keV to ∼1  GeV) sterile neutrinos that are far more weakly (or not at all) mixed with active species and could constitute dark matter.

Accurate predictive models of future disease onset are crucial for effective preventive healthcare, yet longitudinal data sets linking early risk factors to subsequent health outcomes are limited. To overcome this challenge, we introduce a novel framework, redictive sk modeling using ndelian andomization (PRiMeR), which utilizes genetic effects as supervisory signals to learn disease risk predictors without relying on longitudinal data. To do so, PRiMeR leverages risk factors and genetic data from a healthy cohort, along with results from genome-wide association studies of diseases of interest.

While plastics like polyethylene terephthalate can already be degraded efficiently by the activity of hydrolases, other synthetic polymers like polyurethanes (PUs) and polyamides (PAs) largely resist biodegradation. In this study, we solved the first crystal structure of the metagenomic urethanase UMG-SP-1, identified highly flexible loop regions to comprise active site residues, and targeted a total of 20 potential hot spots by site-saturation mutagenesis. Engineering campaigns yielded variants with single mutations, exhibiting almost 3- and 8-fold improved activity against highly stable N-aryl urethane and amide bonds, respectively.

Objective: This study was undertaken to analyze whether the rate of breakthrough seizures in patients taking antiseizure medication (ASM) who have been seizure-free for at least 12 months varies among different types and etiologies of epilepsy. Given the relative ease of achieving seizure freedom with ASM in patients with post-ischemic stroke epilepsy, we hypothesized that this etiology is associated with a reduced risk of breakthrough seizures.
