Spirometra Faust, Campbell et Kellogg, 1929 is a genus of cestodes belonging to the family Diphyllobothriidae. To date, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals are known second intermediate hosts of these parasites; humans can also be infected (the zoonotic disease is known as sparganosis or spirometrosis). Although the number of phylogenetic studies on Spirometra spp.

Herein, we reviewed different aspects of the evolutionary biology with emphasis on the genome dynamic linked to the burst speciation process in this genus.

They live in temporary ponds and each generation must be completed in a few months, depending on environmental stochasticity. Annual fish survive the dry season through diapausing eggs buried in the substrate of these ponds.

This species was found in a single pond, a paleochannel of the Bermejo River, which is seriously disturbed by soybean plantations surrounding it. Despite intensive sampling in the area, this species was only registered in this pond where it was relatively scarce.

The annual fish offers exceptional advantages for studies of genetics, genomics, developmental biology, population dynamics, ecology, biogeography, and evolution. They inhabit extremely variable freshwater environments in Africa and South America, have a short lifespan and a set of unique and fascinating developmental characteristics.

It is a monophyletic genus, but morphological and molecular data do not resolve the relationship among intrageneric clades and high rates of substitution have been previously described in some mitochondrial genes. In this work, the complete mitogenome of a species of the genus was determined for the first time.

Larvae (L3) of two species of Contracaecum were found parasitizing species of Rivulidae in the Atlantic coastal basins from Uruguay. The aim of this study is to determine the patterns of differentiation of this host-parasite complex in order to clarify possible coevolutionary events in such interaction throughout phylogeographic approach using both nuclear and mitochondrial molecular markers (internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox-1)).

All phylogenetic analyses based on the COI mitochondrial gene were consistent to support the monophyly of the genus Odontesthes and to include O. argentinensis, O.

Annual fishes inhabit temporary ponds that dry out during the dry season when adults die. The embryos exhibit an atypical developmental pattern and remain buried in the bottom mud until the next rainy season.

The results revealed a remarkable antiproliferative activity of the triphenylphosphane mononuclear compounds 3-4 (series a, b, c) and the best inhibition was provided for 3c and 4c with the 2-phenylaniline ligand and a six membered chelate ring. Interestingly, 3c and 4c were 14 and 19 times more potent than cisplatin for the inhibition of the cisplatin resistant HCT116 human adenocarcinoma cell line, respectively.

Using histological markers of cellular injury, we also studied the morphological alterations of neurons and astroglial cells in different regions of neonate rats CNS after NaVO3 exposure. Dams of treated litters were intraperitoneally injected with 3mgNaVO3/kgbody weight/day during 12days starting on post-natal day (PND) 10.

The aim of this article was to report preliminary results of our clinical experience with HT in pediatric malignancies.
Methods: In this study 66 consecutive patients younger than 14 years old, treated with HT at our center between January 2006 and April 2010, have been included.
The European wild boar Sus scrofa was first introduced into Uruguay, in southern South America during the early decades of the last century. Subsequently, and starting from founder populations, its range spread throughout the country and into the neighbouring Brazilian state Rio Grande do Sul. Due to the subsequent negative impact, it was officially declared a national pest.

We also proposed to analyze the effect of 2,4-D on undernourished (UN) pups. Four experimental rat groups were used: well-nourished (WN) pups, litters with eight offsprings; UN pups, litters with fourteen offsprings; WN pups whose mother received 70 mg/kg/day of 2,4-D from postnatal day (PND) 9 to 21 (WN70 pups); and UN pups whose mother received 70 mg/kg/day of 2,4-D from PND 9 to 21 (UN70 pups).
