Article Synopsis
  • Recent increases in cheese consumption and the rising cost of traditional rennet have sparked interest in finding plant-based alternatives for cheese production, particularly for those with dietary restrictions.
  • This study investigates an aspartic protease from Salpichroa origanifolia fruits (SoAP), which was found to have lower milk-clotting capabilities compared to animal rennet but showed greater hydrolysis of α-casein.
  • The identification of several bioactive peptides from different casein types suggests that SoAP could not only serve as an alternative rennet but also offer health benefits, making it suitable for artisan cheese manufacturing.

Purpose: To derive a value set from Uruguayan general population using the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire and report population norms.

Methods: General population individuals were randomly assigned to value 10 health states using composite time trade off and 7 pairs of health states through discrete choice experiments. A stratified sampling with quotas by location, gender, age and socio-economic status was used to respect the Uruguayan population structure.

Obesity (OB) in adults is associated with insulin resistance, hypertension, and left atrial (LA) enlargement. This study aimed to determine the association between LA size and (1) different components of the metabolic syndrome (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], insulin levels, lipid levels, and blood pressure), and (2) left ventricular (LV) diameters and diastolic function. Data were collected cross-sectionally from 142 healthy adolescent boys age 16.

Background: Left atrial (LA) enlargement has been linked to obesity and insulin resistance in adults.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the association in children between LA area and: (i) different components of the metabolic syndrome including obesity (OB), measures of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR, proinsulin), and blood pressure (BP); and (ii) left ventricular mass (LVM) and diastolic function, measured using echo Doppler.

Methods And Results: Eighty-four (44 females) subjects, [40 OB (BMI>95%), 28 overweight (BMI>85%)], 16 non-OB (BMI<85%)] aged 9+/-2.

The relative contribution of heritable and nonheritable factors to disease expression in BRCA2 mutation carriers is largely unknown. This report describes a familial breast cancer syndrome in a pair of identical female twins. These twins showed an extremely high concordance in their clinical histories; both twins exhibited similar cancer-related risk factors, and developed breast cancer at the same age with the same disease stage and identical histological features.
