Objective: To estimate the epidemiology of Leber's optic neuropathy (NOHL) in the Region of Madrid.
Material And Methods: The neuro-ophthalmologists who work at public hospitals of the CAM were interviewed by telephone. They were asked about the number of patients with NOHL that they had diagnosed during the time that they had been responsible for the neuro-ophthalmology department of that public hospital.
Zika virus (ZIKV) can infect human developing brain (HDB) progenitors resulting in epidemic microcephaly, whereas analogous cellular tropism offers treatment potential for the adult brain cancer, glioblastoma (GBM). We compared productive ZIKV infection in HDB and GBM primary tissue explants that both contain SOX2+ neural progenitors. Strikingly, although the HDB proved uniformly vulnerable to ZIKV infection, GBM was more refractory, and this correlated with an innate immune expression signature.

Most studies have focused on biomarker discovery rather than exosome function. Through sequencing we identified the miRNA repertoire of urinary exosomes from healthy volunteers; 276 mature miRNAs and 345 pre-miRNAs were identified (43%/7% of reads).

Methods And Results: A phase IIIb, randomized, parallel, double-blind study was conducted in 140 MFS patients, age range: 5-60 years, with maximum aortic diameter <45 mm who received losartan (n = 70) or atenolol (n = 70).

Biologic drugs have provided excellent results in the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis. Nevertheless, in routine clinical practice, combinations of biologic drugs with phototherapy or systemic drugs can increase efficacy, diminish toxicity, and reduce the cost of treatment. Published experience with these combinations is scarce, although the results are often satisfactory.

Recent data indicate a spectrum of exosomal functions, including RNA transfer, antigen presentation, modulation of apoptosis, and shedding of obsolete protein. Exosomes derived from all nephron segments are also present in human urine, where their function is unknown.

We obtained this high proteome and peptide (11.4 peptides/protein) coverage by a combination of extensive sample fractionation, high resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry, and combined database searching using the iProphet software as part of the Trans-Proteomics Pipeline.

Here, we identify H37N21.1 as a gene that regulates vulval induction in let-60(n1046gf), a strain with a gain-of-function mutation in the Caenorhabditis elegans Ras orthologue, and show that somatic deletion of Nrbp1, the mouse orthologue of this gene, results in an intestinal progenitor cell phenotype that leads to profound changes in the proliferation and differentiation of all intestinal cell lineages.

The present studies were undertaken to evaluate the utility of the H295R system as an in vitro assay to assess the potential of chemicals to modulate steroidogenesis. The effects of four model chemicals on the expression of ten steroidogenic genes and on the production of three steroid hormones were examined. Exposures with individual model chemicals as well as binary mixtures were conducted.

Design: We retrospectively studied 20 stable patients on NPPV for CRF secondary to: kyphoscoliosis (eight), morbid obesity (six), thoracoplasty (four), neuromuscular diseases (two), who underwent surgical procedures with general anaesthesia, between January 1998 and December 2003.
Material And Methods: The variables studied were: type of surgery, hours of orotracheal intubation, hours of stay in the postsurgical reanimation unit (PRU), postoperative pulmonary complications and days of hospital stay.
A novel bioassay with the human adrenocortical carcinoma cell line H295R can be used to screen for endocrine disrupting chemicals that affect the expression of genes important in steroidogenesis. This assay was employed to study the effects of organic contaminants associated with the freshwater pond sediments collected in the Ostrava-Karvina region, Czech Republic. The modulation of ten major genes involved in the synthesis of steroid hormones (CYP11A, CYP11B2, CYP17, CYP19, 17betaHSD1, 17betaHSD4, CYP21, 3betaHSD2, HMGR, StAR) after exposure of H295R cells to sediment extracts was investigated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

For example, any alterations in the pathways of steroid synthesis or breakdown have the potential to Cause endocrine disruption. Therefore monitoring these pathways can provide information relative to a chemical's ability to impact endocrine function.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe potential for a variety of environmental contaminants to disturb endocrine function in wildlife and humans has been of recent concern. While much effort is being focused on the assessment of effects mediated through steroid hormone receptor-based mechanisms, there are potentially several other mechanisms that could lead to endocrine disruption. Recent studies have demonstrated that a variety of xenobiotics can alter the gene expression or activity of enzymes involved in steroidogenesis.

Objective: To determine the influence of severity of obesity on morbidity and mortality following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and vertical ringed gastroplasty, with severity classified as morbid obesity (MO) defined by a body mass index (BMI) between 35 and 55 Kg/m2 and super-morbid obesity (SMO) defined by a BMI exceeding 55 Kg/m2.
Method: A series of patients who underwent the aforementioned type of gastric bypass surgery were followed for 5 years. The patients were classified as to whether they had associated sleep apnea syndrome, alveolar hypoventilation, or "overlap syndrome".
A prospective, multicenter pharmacovigilance study was carried out to evaluate the safety of a new 7-dose treatment schedule of subcutaneous immunotherapy as opposed to the conventional 13 doses normally recommended. The study was carried out in 14 centers and included 261 patients (children and adults) with respiratory allergic disease due to sensitization to mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and/or farinae). A total of 2290 doses were administered under the direct supervision of the participating specialists.

Topological, geometric, and electronic descriptors were obtained for model generation. Relationships between descriptors and the retention data reported were established by linear multiple regression, giving equations that can be used to predict the Kovats indices for compounds present in essential oils, both in DB-1 and DB-Wax columns.

Extra-anatomic axillofemoral bypass is a surgical procedure that is indicated in cases of occlusive aortoiliac pathology in which the transabdominal way is not feasible or in patients of high risk. We present a preliminary study in which we have prospectively evaluated 14 patients who were received an axillofemoral bypass during 1990. After preoperative evaluation two groups were identified: Group ALR (5 patients) with combined anesthetic blockade of supraclavicular brachial plexus and continuous subarachnoid blockade.
