Mental illness disclosure in Chinese immigrant communities.

Support from social networks is imperative to mental health recovery of persons with mental illness. However, disclosing mental illness may damage a person's participation in networks due to mental illness stigma, especially in Chinese immigrant communities where social networks (the guanxi network) have specific social-cultural significance. This study focused on mental illness disclosure in Chinese immigrant communities in New York City.

The last two decades have seen a rapid increase of Fuzhounese immigrants (from Fujian Province, China) to the U.S. This group spurred the interest of researchers because of their new immigrant status and their demographic and sociocultural background that places them at a significant disadvantage compared with the majority of already-established Chinese immigrants.
