In this study, we provide a quantitative description of the adsorption of water-soluble -substituted glycine oligomers (peptoids) to supported lipid bilayers that mimic mammalian plasma membranes. We prepared a small array of systematically varied peptoid sequences ranging in length from 3 to 15 residues. Using the nonlinear optical method second harmonic generation (SHG), we directly monitored adsorption of aqueous solutions of 3- and 15-residue peptoids to phospholipid membranes of varying physical phase, cholesterol content, and head group charge in physiologically relevant pH buffer conditions without the use of extrinsic labels.

Indomethacin adsorbed to gel-phase lipids with a high binding affinity, suggesting that like other arylacetic acid-containing drugs, it preferentially interacts with ordered lipid domains. We discovered that adsorption of indomethacin to gel-phase phospholipids was endothermic and entropically driven, whereas adsorption to fluid-phase phospholipids was exothermic and enthalpically driven.

In this study, we show that silk galleries produced by the embiopteran Antipaluria urichi exhibit a highly hydrophobic wetting state with high water adhesion macroscopically equivalent to the rose petal effect. Specifically, the silk sheets have advancing contact angles above 150°, but receding contact angle approaching 0°.

The SERMs investigated in this study include raloxifene, tamoxifen, and the tamoxifen metabolites 4-hydroxytamoxifen, N-desmethyltamoxifen, and endoxifen. Equilibrium association constants (Ka) were measured for SERMs using varying lipid compositions to examine how lipid phase, packing density, and cholesterol content impact SERM-membrane interactions.

Here, we present nonlinear vibrational surface spectra of fused silica substrates functionalized with quinuclidine diastereomers during exposure to 10(11) to 10(13) molecules of ozone per cm(3) in 1 atm helium to model ozone-limited and ozone-rich tropospheric conditions. Kinetic studies show that diastereomers that orient their reactive C=C double bonds toward the gas phase exhibit heterogeneous ozonolysis rate constants that are 2 times faster than diastereomers that orient their C=C double bonds away from the gas phase.

The heterogeneous reactions of ozone with hydrocarbons covalently linked to oxide surfaces serve as models for studying heterogeneous oxidation of biogenic terpenes adsorbed to mineral aerosol surfaces commonly found in the troposphere. Vibrational SFG is also used to track the C=C double bond oxidation reactions initiated by ozone in real time and to characterize the surface-bound product species.
