Amino acids modified with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators for the polymerization of styrenes and methacrylates were prepared. Fmoc-4-(1-chloroethyl)-phenylalanine (5) was synthesized in four steps from Fmoc-tyrosine.
