Training addiction counselors to deliver a brief psychoeducational intervention for chronic pain among patients in opioid agonist treatment: A pilot investigation.

Background: Despite high rates of chronic pain among their patients, opioid agonist treatment (OAT) counselors report an absence of training to manage chronic pain.

Methods: A multidisciplinary team developed a tailored training for counselors to screen and address chronic pain via a brief psychosocial intervention, and implemented it with 52 addiction counselors. Data on knowledge (9 true-false items) as well as attitudes, interest, and perceived ability (scored on 5-point Likert-type scales) were collected from counselors before (pre-test), after (post-test) training, and after 6 months (follow-up).

Here, to produce hFGF21 efficiently in Escherichia coli, the expression and solubility of hFGF21 were tested and optimised by fusing the protein with one of eight tags: hexahistidine (His6), thioredoxin (Trx), small ubiquitin-related modifier (Sumo), glutathione S-transferase (GST), maltose-binding protein (MBP), N-utilisation substance protein A (NusA), human protein disulphide isomerase (PDI), and the b'a' domain of PDI (PDIb'a'). Objective: To determine whether HLA-B27 expression alters the response of bone marrow monocytes from HLA-B27/human β2 -microglobulin-transgenic (B27-Tg) rats to tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and, if so, whether this affects the cells involved in bone homeostasis.

Methods: Bone marrow monocytes were treated with RANKL or with TNFα to promote osteoclast formation. Osteoclasts were quantified by counting.

Catatonia, associated with a variety of medical and psychiatric conditions such as mood disorders and schizophrenia, is frequently treated with either benzodiazepines or with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in treatment-resistant cases. Simultaneous treatment with both is usually avoided. Here, we report a case of the use of the benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil before ECT to facilitate the simultaneous use of lorazepam and ECT for the treatment of co-occurring catatonia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) accessory protein Nef directs virus escape from immune surveillance by subverting host cell intracellular signaling and membrane traffic to down-regulate cell-surface major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I). The interaction of Nef with the sorting proteins PACS-1 and PACS-2 mediates key signaling and trafficking steps required for Nef-mediated MHC-I down-regulation. Purpose: Celiac disease is associated with hypocholesterolemia, which is thought to contribute to a favorable cardiovascular risk profile. This led to suggestions that the diagnosis of celiac disease and its treatment with a gluten-free diet may result in elevation of the serum cholesterol level and worsen this risk profile. Background: To evaluate whether abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) growth in individual patients can be characterized as continuous or discontinuous (staccato).

Study Design: From 1996 to 2002, 609 patients presented with unruptured AAAs. Of these, 278 underwent prompt repair and 331 were observed.
