Exome sequencing of Singapore Chinese anti-citrullinated-protein-antibody-positive rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Objective: More than 130 susceptibility loci for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been identified with genome-wide association studies (GWAS). To investigate the genetic predisposition of Chinese anti-cyclic-citrullinated-peptides-antibody-positive RA, we carried out an exome sequencing study.

Methods: Patients were recruited from three major public hospitals in Singapore, Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Singapore General Hospital and National University Health System.

Rare case of haemoperitoneum secondary to a ruptured ovarian ectopic pregnancy superimposed by a bleeding corpus luteum cyst.

An adolescent female presented with an acute abdomen and elevated beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels and underwent a laparoscopy for a suspected ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Intraoperatively, a ruptured haemorrhagic corpus luteal cyst and tissues suggestive of products of conception were noted in the same ovary. Histology confirmed an ovarian ectopic pregnancy.

Comparative analysis of the safety and efficacy of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization and yttrium-90 radioembolization in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.

Purpose: To compare retrospectively the safety and efficacy of yttrium-90 ((90)Y) radioembolization with the safety and efficacy of chemoembolization in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Materials And Methods: Survival and complication rates were evaluated for patients with HCC who underwent chemoembolization or radioembolization at a single institution between August 2007 and April 2010. Complications were graded according to a standardized grading system for embolization procedures.

Total-body screening: preliminary results of a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: The authors performed a pilot randomized controlled trial of total-body screening to assess the feasibility of a full-scale study.

Materials And Methods: After informed consent, 50 asymptomatic people were randomized to either the intervention arm (total-body screening with multidetector computed tomography) or the control arm (no screening for 3 years). The study was approved by our institutional review board and was compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Coumadin knowledge deficits: do recently hospitalized patients know how to safely manage the medication?

There is much that patients must know to be able to safely manage warfarin (Coumadin). This study examined the extent of Coumadin-related knowledge patients living at home had 1 week following hospital discharge. Findings indicate that home care nurses need to concentrate on supplementing the inadequate knowledge patients have about Coumadin therapy, especially among the elderly.
