Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and plays an important role in several metabolic processes relevant for the human health. As the main metabolic pathway for tryptophan along the kynurenine axis is involved in inflammatory responses, changed metabolite levels can be used to monitor inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative colitis. As a progenitor of serotonin, altered tryptophan levels have been related to several neurogenerative diseases as well as depression or anxiety.

Transport of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs across an Oral Mucosa Epithelium In Vitro Model.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most prescribed drugs to treat pain or fever. However, oral administration of NSAIDs is frequently associated with adverse effects due to their inhibitory effect on the constitutively expressed cyclooxygenase enzyme 1 (COX-1) in, for instance, the gastrointestinal tract. A systemic delivery, such as a buccal delivery, of NSAIDs would be beneficial and additionally has the advantage of a non-invasive administration route, especially favourable for children or the elderly.

Direct-to-participant recruitment of mothers and infants: A strategic approach during challenging pandemic times.

Under traditional circumstances, most clinical trials rely on in-person operations to identify, recruit, and enroll study participants and to complete study-related visits. During unusual circumstances, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the typical clinical trial model is challenged and forced to explore alternative approaches to implementing study recruitment, participant enrollment, and data collection strategies. One such alternative is a direct-to-participant approach which leverages electronic resources and relevant technological devices (, smart phones) available to researchers and patients.

Directed Transport of CRP Across In Vitro Models of the Blood-Saliva Barrier Strengthens the Feasibility of Salivary CRP as Biomarker for Neonatal Sepsis.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a commonly used serum biomarker for detecting sepsis in neonates. After the onset of sepsis, serial measurements are necessary to monitor disease progression; therefore, a non-invasive detection method is beneficial for neonatal well-being. While some studies have shown a correlation between serum and salivary CRP levels in septic neonates, the causal link behind this correlation remains unclear.

An In Vitro Barrier Model of the Human Submandibular Salivary Gland Epithelium Based on a Single Cell Clone of Cell Line HTB-41: Establishment and Application for Biomarker Transport Studies.

The blood-saliva barrier (BSB) consists of the sum of the epithelial cell layers of the oral mucosa and salivary glands. In vitro models of the BSB are inevitable to investigate and understand the transport of salivary biomarkers from blood to saliva. Up to now, standardized, cell line-based models of the epithelium of the submandibular salivary gland are still missing for this purpose.

During the last years, the popularity of saliva has been increasing for its applicability as a diagnostic fluid. Blood biomarker molecules have to cross the blood-saliva barrier (BSB) in order to appear in saliva. The BSB consists of all oral and salivary gland epithelial barriers.

Racing dragons and remembering aliens: Benefits of playing number and working memory games on kindergartners' numerical knowledge.

Sources that contribute to variation in mathematical achievement include both numerical knowledge and general underlying cognitive processing abilities. The current study tested the benefits of tablet-based training games that targeted each of these areas for improving the mathematical knowledge of kindergarten-age children. We hypothesized that playing a number-based game targeting numerical magnitude knowledge would improve children's broader numerical skills.

Exploring Age-Related Metamemory Differences using Modified Brier Scores and Hierarchical Clustering.

Older adults (OAs) typically experience memory failures as they age. However, with some exceptions, studies of OAs' ability to assess their own memory functions-Metamemory (MM) - find little evidence that this function is susceptible to age-related decline. Our study examines OAs' and young adults' (YAs) MM performance and strategy use.

Nutritional Practices and Growth in Premature Infants After Surgical Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

Objective: The aim of the study was to describe the nutritional provisions received by infants with surgical necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and the associated effects on short-term growth.

Methods: Through the Children's Hospitals Neonatal Database, we identified infants born ≤32 weeks' gestation with surgical NEC from 5 regional neonatal intensive care units for 4 years. Excluded infants had isolated intestinal perforation and died <14 days postoperatively.

Nourishing a partnership to improve middle school lunch options: a community-based participatory research project.

Community-based participatory research is predicated on building partnerships that tackle important issues to the community and effectively improve these issues. Community-based participatory research can also be an empowering experience, especially for children. This article describes a university-community partnership in which students at a low-income middle school worked to improve the quality of the cafeteria food provided to the 986 students eligible for free and reduced price lunches.

Affordances--possibilities for action--are constrained by the match between actors and their environments. For motor decisions to be adaptive, affordances must be detected accurately. Three experiments examined the correspondence between motor decisions and affordances as participants reached through apertures of varying size.

Stochastic kinetics of intracellular huntingtin aggregate formation.

Neurodegeneration in Huntington disease is described by neuronal loss in which the probability of cell death remains constant with time. However, the quantitative connection between the kinetics of cell death and the molecular mechanism initiating neurodegeneration remains unclear. One hypothesis is that nucleation of protein aggregates containing exon I fragments of the mutant huntingtin protein (mhttex1), which contains an expanded polyglutamine region in patients with the disease, is the explanation for the infrequent but steady occurrence of neuronal death, resulting in adult onset of the disease.
