The present work describes the development of a novel direct screening method, assayed in 96-well format, for evaluation of enzymatic alkyl glycoside production in a hexanol-water two-phase system. Alkyl glycosides are surfactants with a range of applications and with good biodegradability and low toxicity. Enzymatic synthesis makes it possible to prepare beta-d-glucopyranosides with high purity.

The serine/threonine kinases Plk1, Plk2, and Plk3 harbor a protein-protein interaction domain dubbed polo-box domain (PBD). Recently, the inhibition of the PBD of the cancer target Plk1 has been successfully explored as an alternative to the inhibition of the kinase by ATP-competitive ligands. However, because the PBDs of Plk1, Plk2, and Plk3 have very similar optimal binding motifs, absolute specificity for the PBD of Plk1 over the PBDs of Plk2 and Plk3 may also represent a big challenge for a small molecule.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: Even after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is ruled out, observational studies have suggested that many patients with nonspecific chest pain have a high burden of cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) and are at increased long-term risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD)-related mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the premise that evaluation in an observation unit for symptoms of possible ACS is a "teachable moment" with regard to modification of CRFs.
Methods: The authors conducted a baseline face-to-face interview and a 3-month telephone interview of 83 adult patients with at least one modifiable CRF who presented with symptoms of possible ACS to an academic medical center.
Proteins and peptides use their amino acids as medium for electron-transfer reactions that occur either in single-step superexchange or in multistep hopping processes. Whereas the rate of the single-step electron transfer dramatically decreases with the distance, a hopping process is less distance dependent. Electron hopping is possible if amino acids carry oxidizable side chains, like the phenol group in tyrosine.

We report a case where the patient, who chose to forgo any advanced conventional medical intervention (dialysis and mechanical ventilation), had failed to disclose his use of high-dose vitamin C and subsequently died. Intra-renal oxalate crystal deposition was demonstrated at autopsy.

This analytic review concerns the exceptions: the times when these cognitive processes fail and the final diagnosis is missed or wrong. We argue that physicians in general underappreciate the likelihood that their diagnoses are wrong and that this tendency to overconfidence is related to both intrinsic and systemically reinforced factors.

Here, we show that citrate promotes biofilm formation via stimulating both cell-to-surface and cell-to-cell interactions. Citrate-stimulated biofilm formation is independent of the ica locus, and in fact, citrate represses polysaccharide adhesin production.

The aim of this study was to compare the cardiac output values obtained with a transoesophageal echo-Doppler and those obtained with a continuous thermodilution cardiac output pulmonary artery catheter.
Methods: Twenty adult patients were prospectively studied during a 5 min hepatic vascular exclusion test performed at the end of the dissection phase.
Objectives: The objective of the study was to determine how many patient-related questions emergency medicine physicians have and how they answer them at the point of care.
Methods: We conducted an observational study of 26 physicians at 2 institutions. All physicians were followed for at least 2 shifts.

Background: Clinical decision support systems can improve medical diagnosis and reduce diagnostic errors. Older systems, however, were cumbersome to use and had limited success in identifying the correct diagnosis in complicated cases.
Objective: To measure the sensitivity and speed of "Isabel" (Isabel Healthcare Inc.
