Due to its competitive nature, youth sports may provide an environment that invites the display of negative parenting behavior and exposes children to adults outside of their own household. This study aimed to quantify the frequency of negative parent and spectator behavior at youth sporting events and compare incidences across different sports and age ranges. Investigators attended baseball, basketball, soccer, and football events in Central O'ahu, Hawai'i for children ages 6 to 10 years.

However, previous studies yield conflicting results regarding the protective quality of leatherhead football helmets. There is limited research comparing the modern football helmet and the modern hockey helmet, with one previous study demonstrating the football helmet as providing a lower risk of concussion.

Additionally, physician shortages have decreased family planning resources available to patients. The objective of this study was to assess contraception availability by determining the number and location of healthcare providers in Hawai'i that prescribed at least one form of contraception.

We also reported that HbA1c levels measured by enzymatic assay (EA) (EA-HbA1c) during off-site health checkups are lower. In the present study, we compared IA-HbA1c levels or EA-HbA1c levels during off-site health checkups with on-site high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-HbA1c levels using the same samples.

It has been demonstrated that mid-infrared broadband emission extending from 2515 to 3735 nm was obtained by energy transfer between Er and Dy. We experimentally investigated the optimum design of Er/Dy co-doped ZBLAN fiber in terms of ion concentration, fiber length, pumping configuration, and pumping power.

She was followed up for 1 year and 5 months after completion of initial treatment for peritoneal cancer (preoperative chemotherapy + optimal surgery + chemotherapy). A gradual increase in the tumor marker CA125 occurred, and computed tomography and ultrasonography showed bilateral neck, left supraclavicular and right axillary lymphadenopathy.

The lasing evolution is discussed in terms of the FBG reflectivity, wavelength transition to the Bragg wavelength, and output power of the mid-infrared fiber laser.

Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional, exploratory study applied two instruments - the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and the World Health Organization QOL-Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) - in two cities of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Among the institutionalized elderly, G1 ( = 150), 50% were not mentally able to answer the questions correctly, 12% did not answer all the questions, and 7.
Although paper-based microfluidic devices are an ideal platform for point-of-care (POC) diagnostics, it is difficult to achieve microfluidic control required for sensitive analyses such as ELISA on a paper substrate. Here, we present a novel lateral-flow test chip that can perform operations similar to a pump, such as flowing, stopping, and replacing a solution, just by adding the solution onto an inlet port. The chip was fabricated by laminating paper, film, and adhesive tape.

A microgroove structure inscribed on a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrate functions as a superhydrophilic membrane similar to paper. We first estimated the flow rate for pure water on microgrooves fabricated at various laser fluences in the range from 9.

If a embryo is implanted into the rudimentary horn, continuation of pregnancy is difficult due to the risk of uterine rupture. We recently performed laparoscopic resection of the right rudimentary horn after two right rudimentary horn pregnancies in a woman, in whom a normal pregnancy occurred in the left unicornuate uterus, leading to successful delivery of a baby.

Objectives: Endometriosis is a chronic disease caused by the presence of endometrial tissue in ectopic locations outside the uterus. Chronic exposure to the environmental pollutant dioxin has been correlated with an increased incidence in the development of endometriosis in non-human primates. We have therefore examined whether there is an association between the polymorphisms of ten dioxin detoxification genes and endometriosis in Japanese women.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: The aim of the study was to test whether estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene polymorphisms are correlated with the risk of the development of endometriosis in Japanese women, as a preliminary study.
Methods: To compare allelic frequencies and genotype distributions, a case-control study of 100 affected women and 143 women with no evidence of disease was performed using 10 microsatellite repeat markers and 66 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ESR1 gene region.
Results: Although our results might be insufficient to detect genetic susceptibility, owing to the small sample size and low genetic power, statistical analysis of the differences in allelic frequency between the cases and controls at each microsatellite locus demonstrated that no microsatellite locus in the ESR1 gene displayed a significant association with the disease when multiple testing was taken into account.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare locally malignant cutaneous tumor of neuroendocrine origin, most often occurring on the head and neck of the elderly. MCC is a highly aggressive tumor with a high percentage of recurrence, metastatic spread and mortality. Despite the highly malignant course of MCC, there have been several reports of spontaneous regression or resolution.

However, recent epidemiological investigations have shown conflicting results. Although peritoneal fluid is a specific microenvironment playing a pivotal role in the development of endometriosis, to our knowledge, there is no published study evaluating the concentrations of dioxins in serum and peritoneal fluid simultaneously.
