Due to its competitive nature, youth sports may provide an environment that invites the display of negative parenting behavior and exposes children to adults outside of their own household. This study aimed to quantify the frequency of negative parent and spectator behavior at youth sporting events and compare incidences across different sports and age ranges. Investigators attended baseball, basketball, soccer, and football events in Central O'ahu, Hawai'i for children ages 6 to 10 years.

It has already been reported that HbA1c levels measured by immunoassay (IA) (IA-HbA1c) during off-site health checkups present falsely lower results. We also reported that HbA1c levels measured by enzymatic assay (EA) (EA-HbA1c) during off-site health checkups are lower. In the present study, we compared IA-HbA1c levels or EA-HbA1c levels during off-site health checkups with on-site high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-HbA1c levels using the same samples.

Broadband mid-infrared amplified spontaneous emission from Er/Dy co-doped fluoride fiber with a simple diode-pumped configuration.

We report the femtosecond laser inscription of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in an Er-doped fluoride glass fiber used for lasing at a mid-infrared wavelength of 2.8 µm. The lasing evolution is discussed in terms of the FBG reflectivity, wavelength transition to the Bragg wavelength, and output power of the mid-infrared fiber laser.

In this Letter, we report a compact and robust coherent source, operating in mid-infrared (IR) and based on the Fe:ZnSe chalcogenide gain medium, optically pumped by an Er:ZBLAN fiber laser. The output power of 2.1 W with a 59% slope efficiency with respect to the absorbed pump power at liquid nitrogen cooling is achieved.

A case of aortic valve laceration after balloon aortic valvuloplasty with morphological features.

A 71-year-old man suffered from congestive heart failure due to severe aortic stenosis. We performed balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) as a bridge to transcatheter aortic valve replacement using transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) by the retrograde approach. Balloon dilatation was carefully performed using an 18 mm balloon.

Effective treatment of congestive heart failure using adaptive servo-ventilation in an end-stage renal disease patient on hemodialysis.

A 61-year-old man who was being treated with hemodialysis (HD) for end-stage renal disease presented with symptoms of severe congestive heart failure (CHF). Removing excess intravascular fluid during HD was difficult due to the patient's chronic hypotension induced by severe left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. The application of adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) increased the patient's cardiac output and blood pressure during HD, thus resulting in the effective removal of excess intravascular fluid.

If a embryo is implanted into the rudimentary horn, continuation of pregnancy is difficult due to the risk of uterine rupture. Lack of an association human dioxin detoxification gene polymorphisms with endometriosis in Japanese women: results of a pilot study.

Objectives: Endometriosis is a chronic disease caused by the presence of endometrial tissue in ectopic locations outside the uterus. Chronic exposure to the environmental pollutant dioxin has been correlated with an increased incidence in the development of endometriosis in non-human primates. We have therefore examined whether there is an association between the polymorphisms of ten dioxin detoxification genes and endometriosis in Japanese women.

Failure to detect significant association between estrogen receptor-alpha gene polymorphisms and endometriosis in Japanese women.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to test whether estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene polymorphisms are correlated with the risk of the development of endometriosis in Japanese women, as a preliminary study.

Methods: To compare allelic frequencies and genotype distributions, a case-control study of 100 affected women and 143 women with no evidence of disease was performed using 10 microsatellite repeat markers and 66 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ESR1 gene region.

Results: Although our results might be insufficient to detect genetic susceptibility, owing to the small sample size and low genetic power, statistical analysis of the differences in allelic frequency between the cases and controls at each microsatellite locus demonstrated that no microsatellite locus in the ESR1 gene displayed a significant association with the disease when multiple testing was taken into account.

A case of complete spontaneous regression of extremely advanced Merkel cell carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare locally malignant cutaneous tumor of neuroendocrine origin, most often occurring on the head and neck of the elderly. MCC is a highly aggressive tumor with a high percentage of recurrence, metastatic spread and mortality. Despite the highly malignant course of MCC, there have been several reports of spontaneous regression or resolution.
