Biofilm is a syntrophic community of microorganisms enveloped by extracellular polymeric substances and displays remarkable adaptability to dynamic environments. Implementing biofilm in anaerobic digestion has been widely investigated and applied as it promotes microbial retention time and enhances the efficiency. Previous studies on anaerobic biofilm primarily focused on application in wastewater treatment, while its role has been significantly extended to accelerate the degradation of lignocellulosic biomass, improve gas-liquid mass transfer for biogas upgrading, or enhance resistance to inhibitors or toxic pollutants.

The aim of this study was to assess the concentration of Se and other minerals in sheep and the supplied feed. Four macrominerals (Ca, P, Mg, and S), 7 microminerals (Se, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, and Mo), and 2 toxic minerals (Cd and Pb) were analyzed in 69 feed and 292 sheep blood samples from 30 farms in different regions of Kosovo. The samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and mineral concentrations in whole blood were measured to assess their status in animals.

Inorganic selenium (Se) in the form of selenite is applied to livestock to avoid Se deficiency. Selenite is, however, an artificial Se source in diets of unsupplemented chickens. It is therefore hypothesized that organic Se sources, such as Se-enriched yeast and wheat, could be a more suitable Se supply in animal nutrition, although information on the transition of Se from organic Se sources in fast-growing chickens is scarce.

Grassland management varied in terms of time since establishment. Short-term grassland management (SG) was defined as establishment or reseeding every fourth year or more often, and long-term grassland management (LG) was defined as less frequent establishment or reseeding.

A sample was divided into four aliquots which were analyzed in parallel by 1D isoelectric focusing electrophoresis (IEF)-laser ablation (LA) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS), 1D sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS PAGE)-LA ICP MS, and, in duplicate, by 2D IEF-PAGE. On the basis of the 1 D electropherograms obtained, areas supposed to contain the largest concentrations of Se were subjected to LA ICP MS imaging to locate precisely the position of Se-containing proteins which were then identified in the parallel 2D gel by electrospray Orbitrap MS/MS.

The BGPs mainly utilize source-separated organic wastes and industrial food waste as energy sources and separate the ADR into an ADR-liquid and an ADR-solid fraction by centrifugation at the BGP. According to the Norwegian standard for organic fertilizers, the ADR were classified as quality 1 mainly because of high zinc (132-422 mg kg(-1) DM) and copper (23-93 mg kg(-1) DM) concentrations, but also because of high cadmium (0.

Commonly, food plant Se fortification is achieved by selenate fertilisation, but the effect of nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S) supply on the translocation and re-translocation of Se is unknown. Therefore the effect of N and S supply on ⁷⁵selenate/⁷⁵Se translocation and re-translocation during vegetative growth in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) was studied.

Wasting in tuberculosis (TB) patients is associated with the severity of lung disease and low serum level of selenium. Low serum levels of selenium may be due to low food intake or altered absorption/metabolism in the body. We therefore wanted to measure and compare the intake of selenium and sulphur amino acids in smear-positive TB patients and appropriately matched adults.

The proposed microwave digestion method eliminated the hazards associated with the use of HClO4 while maintaining excellent recoveries of selenium. A 2-step HNO3/H2O2 digestion procedure was developed.
