Epigenetic regulation in colorectal cancer: The susceptibility of microRNAs 145, 143 and 133b to DNA demethylation and histone deacetylase inhibitors.

Globally, colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major health concern. Despite improvements in CRC treatment, mortality rates remain high. Genetic instability and epigenetic dysregulation of gene expression are instigators of CRC development that result in genotypic differences, leading to often variable and unpredictable treatment responses.

Evaluation of Access Disparities to Biologic Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs in Rural and Urban Communities.

The American College of Rheumatology guidelines provides a strong recommendation for the use of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) when conventional rheumatoid arthritis treatments fail to meet treatment targets. Although bDMARDs are an effective and important treatment component, access inequalities remain a challenge in many communities worldwide. The purpose of this analysis is to assess nationwide trends in bDMARD access in the United States, with a specific focus on rural and urban access gaps.

Display lag and gain effects on vection experienced by active observers.

Background: This study examined the effects of display lag and gain on visual self-motion perception (i.e., vection) in active observers.

Depth interval estimates from motion parallax and binocular disparity beyond interaction space.

Static and dynamic observers provided binocular and monocular estimates of the depths between real objects lying well beyond interaction space. On each trial, pairs of LEDs were presented inside a dark railway tunnel. The nearest LED was always 40 m from the observer, with the depth separation between LED pairs ranging from 0 up to 248 m.

Stereoscopic perception of real depths at large distances.

There has been no direct examination of stereoscopic depth perception at very large observation distances and depths. We measured perceptions of depth magnitude at distances where it is frequently reported without evidence that stereopsis is non-functional. We adapted methods pioneered at distances up to 9 m by R.

Long-distance 40-Gbit/s soliton transmission over standard fiber by use of dispersion management.

We demonstrate, through numerical simulations, the possibility of transmitting solitonlike pulses over 2000 km of standard fiber at a single-channel data rate of 40 Gbits/s. The system used here employs a novel dispersion map to overcome the large fiber dispersion. The longest transmission distance was achieved with pulses that did not exhibit the enhanced energy normally associated with dispersion management and indeed had lower energy than an equivalent average soliton.

An RZ DPSK receiver design with significantly improved dispersion tolerance.

We show an improved DPSK receiver design which can increase useful dispersion tolerance by up to a factor of two. The increased dispersion tolerance is achieved through optimization of the optical filter at the receiver and the delay of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In this paper we fully explain the concept, quantify the gain and provide an explanation for the operation of the receiver.

Sharpness overconstancy in peripheral vision.

Although much has been learned about the spatial sampling and filtering properties of peripheral vision, little attention has been paid to the remarkably clear appearance of the peripheral visual field. To study the apparent sharpness of stimuli presented in the periphery, we presented Gaussian blurred horizontal edges at 8.3, 16.

Blur and contrast as pictorial depth cues.

Studies have shown that blur can act as a pictorial cue to depth perception. But blurring a stimulus reduces its contrast, and studies have also shown that contrast can act as a pictorial cue to depth perception. To determine whether blur and contrast have separate influences on depth perception, each variable was independently manipulated in two experiments.

The effect of spatial frequency and field size on the spread of exclusive visibility in binocular rivalry.

We measured binocular rivalry between dichoptic, orthogonal, sinusoidal gratings both having spatial frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 c deg-1 in fields ranging from 0.5 to 8 deg of visual angle in diameter.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy: multicenter study of kidney and upper ureter versus middle and lower ureter treatments.

Six institutions throughout the United States participated in this study. Each center used a multifunctional flat table lithotriptor (Dornier MFL-5000) to treat 658 patients with kidney and upper ureteral stones (766 treatments) and 323 with middle and lower ureteral stones (391 treatments), for a total of 925 patients (1,157 treatments). Some patients received more than 1 treatment (that is the kidney and ureter), for a total of 981 patient events.

Conservative management of testicular endodermal sinus tumor in childhood.

Endodermal sinus tumor is the most common testicular neoplasm in childhood. The management of children with this neoplasm remains controversial. We have treated prospectively 5 children with stage I endodermal sinus tumor with limited surgery and no adjuvant therapy.

Isometric detrusor pressure during bladder filling and its dependency on bladder volume and interruption to flow in control subjects.

We characterized the isometric pressures generated by the bladder during voluntary detrusor contraction and interruption of flow. Urodynamic studies were done in 34 healthy female volunteers, with a mean age of 29.6 plus or minus 9.

Spatial distribution and timing of transmitted and reflexly generated urethral pressures in healthy women.

We localized the temporal and spatial distribution of pressures in the urethra to identify their contribution to continence. With the data obtained we resolved the timing between the passively transmitted and actively generated urethral pressures. Data were obtained from 11 healthy female volunteers, with a mean age of 22 years.

Urodynamic analysis of urethral, vesical and perivesical pressure distribution in the healthy female.

The transmission of intra-abdominal pressures to the urethra of the healthy female is examined with respect to cough, Valsalva and holding stimuli. A new method of recording urethral pressures using a four-channel, perfused gap catheter specifically constructed for this investigation is used. The results show that the increase of urethral pressure to stimuli is magnified at the distal urethra to a significant degree.

The effect of sympathectomy on the urethral pressure profile in the experimental animal.

The effect of sympathectomy and various pharmacologic agents on the dog urethral pressure profile (UPP) was assessed. Succinylcholine was used to subtract the effect of the external urethral sphincter from the total UPP. In the presence of succinylcholine effect, sympathectomy caused a decrease in the UPP in 12 of 13 experiments.

Posterior urethral valves.

During the past decade some urologists and radiologists have doubted the existence of posterior urethral valves. It has been suggested that the primary lesion in patients thought to have urethral valves is bladder neck obstruction. During the past seven years we have seen an average of three new cases of posterior urethral valves per annum.

Influence of vesico-ureteral reflux on the response to treatment of urinary tract infections in female children.

3 groups of female children, comprising a total of 169 patients, were followed through successive episodes of urinary tract infection with respect to recurrence of infection. Group A consisted of 66 patients with no evidence of vesico-ureteral reflux. Group B comprised 42 patients with demonstrated vesico-ureteral reflux.

Management of children with urinary tract infections: the Stanford experience.

Two hundred seventy-eight female children with urinary tract infections have been evaluated at Stanford division of urology. All children were followed up for a period of not less than twelve months. Age of onset of infection, clinical presentation, and nature of infecting organisms were observed.

Urinary tract infections in children. Part I-- Young girls with non-refluxing ureters.

This paper is the study of 144 girls with histories of urinary tract infection followed at the Stanford Medical Center who were found to be free of ureterovesical reflux. The mean age at onset of infection for the entire group was about four years and ranged from the first few months of life to age 10. Ninety-two percent of the 505 infection episodes in these children presented with symptoms referable to the lower tract, and bacterial localization studies confirmed that 85 percent of the infections were limited to the bladder.

Urinary tract infections in children. Part III--Treatment of ureterovesical reflux.

Of 134 girls with demonstrable ureterovesical reflux, 61 (105 ureters) had the reflux surgically corrected with an overall surgical cure rate of 97 percent. In the remaining 73 children (112 ureters), the reflux was treated conservatively with medical management alone. During the follow-up period no significant differences were demonstrated in the overall incidence of urinary tract infection; two years following corrective operation or medical treatment more than 50 percent of both medically and surgically treated children were still experiencing infections.
