Objective: To analyze cognitive performance and brain activation during a working memory task in patients with migraine during various phases of the migraine cycle and compare to healthy participants.

Background: Cognitive difficulties reported during migraine attacks remain poorly understood, despite evidence that the lateral frontoparietal network undergoes reversible disturbances and decreased activation during attacks. Recent findings in resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging suggest that brain areas involved in this network interact with subcortical regions during spontaneous migraine attacks.

Article Synopsis
  • Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a primary immune disorder that results in poor B cell function, leading to low levels of immunoglobulins and a higher susceptibility to infections and autoimmune diseases.
  • A rare case of a woman in her 30s, already diagnosed with Evans syndrome and lymphocytic alveolitis, demonstrated CVID when she presented with severe headaches and brain lesions, despite no recurrent infections.
  • Treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin and immunosuppressive therapy improved her condition significantly, emphasizing the need to consider CVID in patients with autoimmune issues and the benefits of timely treatment.

In the setting of a learning collaborative, we conducted an international multicenter phase 2 clinical trial testing the hypothesis that nonmyeloablative-related haploidentical bone marrow transplant (BMT) with thiotepa and posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) will result in 2-year event-free survival (no graft failure or death) of at least 80%. A total of 70 participants were evaluable based on the conditioning protocol. Graft failure occurred in 8 of 70 (11.

To describe the annual incidence and the leading causes of sudden non-cardiac and cardiac death (SCD) in children and young adult Portuguese population. We retrospectively reviewed autopsy of sudden unexpected deaths reports from the Portuguese National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences' database, between 2012 and 2016, for the central region of Portugal, Azores and Madeira (ages 1-40: 26% of the total population). During a 5-year period, 159 SD were identified, corresponding to an annual incidence of 2,4 (95%confidence interval, 1,5-3,6) per 100.

Background & Aims: Malnutrition is common in older individuals with end-stage renal disease on maintenance dialysis. Whether nutritional supplementation may improve skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and survival rate in this population is uncertain. We aimed to analyze the effect of a year of nutritional supplementation on muscle mass and survival rate in older patients on hemodiafiltration.

Background: In patients with established heart failure (HF) low total cholesterol levels associate with worse prognosis. Evidence concerning the impact of Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) in HF is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of LDL-c in patients with HF, both with and without diabetes (DM).

Moyamoya disease is a unique cerebrovascular disease characterized by narrowing of the terminal portion of internal carotid arteries and circle of Willis, with consequent development of a network of collateral vessels in response to brain ischemia. Moyamoya vascular pattern can be idiopathic (Moyamoya disease), is more likely to occur in individuals of Asian ascent and in the pediatric age, or is associated with other diseases (Moyamoya syndrome). We present two cases of stroke in young adults, where workup revealed Moyamoya-type vascular changes.

Cardiomyopathies (CMP) comprise a heterogenous group of diseases affecting primarily the myocardium, either genetic and/or acquired in origin. While many classification systems have been proposed in the clinical setting, there is no internationally agreed pathological consensus concerning the diagnostic approach to inherited CMP at autopsy. A document on autopsy diagnosis of CMP is needed because the complexity of the pathologic backgrounds requires proper insight and expertise.
