Metallothionein (MT) can be induced in mouse liver by a bacterial exotoxin, toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1). Hepatic MT was induced by TSST-1 in a dose-dependent manner from 100 micrograms/kg through 3 mg/kg in CF-1 mice, and by 6 h the induction was almost maximal. The increase of hepatic MT occurred at the mRNA level, also, and both MT-I and II mRNAs increased coordinately.

The results of bile salt treatment in patients with radiolucent stones and a functioning gall bladder have been poor. In 42 of these patients awaiting cholecystectomy we determined the value of duodenal bile examination in predicting gall stone composition, and thus identifying those less likely to respond to bile salt therapy. Based on chemical analysis and scanning electron microscopy, 28 of 42 (67%) gall stones retrieved at surgery were potentially insoluble.

Cytotoxic T lymphocytes specific for tumor-associated antigens are produced by exposing animals to tumor cells and stimulating lymphocytes from animals immunized in vitro with tumor cells and small amounts of interleukin-2 (IL-2). This study was designed to determine whether a fast-growing immunogenic avian sarcoma virus-induced glioma produces primed cytotoxic T lymphocyte precursors during its progression. Lymphocytes from intracerebral glioma-bearing rats generally failed to proliferate in vitro in response to immunization with tumor cells and IL-2 and, when proliferative responses were observed, the lymphocytes were not cytotoxic for glioma cells.

Why some gallstones do not fragment easily to lithotripsy is unclear. The aim of the present study was to determine gallstone factors associated with resistance to fragmentation. Seventy-six cholesterol rich gallstones were subjected to physical evaluation, in vitro computed tomography, chemical analysis by infra red spectroscopy, and ultrastructural studies (of 26 matched stones) by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis.

Lymphocytic (microscopic) colitis is a disease of unknown aetiology which manifests as long-standing intermittent diarrhoea. Diagnosis is confirmed on histological examination of the colon. An association of this uncommon disease with tropical sprue is described.

Thirty-nine patients with cholelithiasis were prospectively studied to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative differences between duodenal bile and gallbladder bile. Duodenal bile obtained before cholecystectomy by nasoduodenal intubation and ceruletide injection was qualitatively similar to gallbladder bile obtained during surgery. Microscopic cholesterol crystals as an indicator of cholesterol gallstones (n = 35) could be detected in 31 (89%) and 35 (100%; p = NS), respectively.

Pseudopregnant mice were produced by mating normal cycling females with a vasectomized male. Interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) mRNA and bioactivity were detected between Days 1 and 8 in untreated pseudopregnant mice and during oil-induced decidualization. High concentrations of IL-1, IL-6, and TNF alpha mRNA and bioactivity were detected in the uterus within 12 h after mating, and both mRNA and bioactivity decreased progressively through Day 3.

Rectal endoscopic ultrasonography was performed using an ultrasound fiberscope in 20 patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension (6 alcoholic patients, 4 patients with hepatitis B surface antigen positive, and 10 cryptogenic patients) and in 10 patients with irritable bowel syndrome as controls. Rectal varices were diagnosed endoscopically when either tortuous or saccular distended veins were seen beneath the mucosa. At rectal endoscopic ultrasonography rectal varices were seen as rounded or oval echo-free structures in the submucosa.

A high failure rate for radiolucent cholesterol gallstones to dissolve with oral bile acids may be due to the presence of insoluble calcium compounds. Twenty sets of radiolucent gallstones, 7-20 mm in diameter, obtained from 20 patients undergoing cholecystectomy, were cut, and the outer surface, outer rim, middle portion, and central core areas were scanned for calcium by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Scrapings from the four areas of each stone were analysed by infrared spectroscopy.

alpha-Hederin (alpha-Hed) is a triterpenoid saponin that has been shown to protect against some hepatotoxicants. This study examined the protective effect of alpha-Hed against cadmium (Cd) hepatotoxicity and the mechanism of protection. alpha-Hed pretreatment (100 mumol/kg, sc) dramatically decreased Cd (3.

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a triterpenoid compound that has been shown to protect against some hepatotoxicants and is used in China to treat hepatitis. This study was conducted to examine the protective effects of OA against cadmium (Cd)-induced liver injury in mice and the mechanism of protection. OA (100 mg/kg x 3 days) pretreatment dramatically decreased Cd (3.

Tumor necrosis interfered with conventional methods of stenting in a patient with hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Therefore, a hepaticoduodenal fistula was percutaneously catheterized and dilated, and a large caliber endoprosthesis inserted to drain the right hepatic ductal system.

Four cases (one asymptomatic and three symptomatic) of solitary non-parasitic cysts of the liver are presented. The asymptomatic cysts was an incidental finding at laparotomy. The other three patients presented with abdominal distension, jaundice and malignant transformation respectively.

Expression of the metallothionein I (MT-I) gene was studied in liver and brain of control mice and rats, as well as following administration of Cd and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Time-course studies revealed that MT mRNA reached a maximum in liver of both mice and rats 6 hr following treatment with Cd or LPS. MT mRNA from control and Cd- and LPS-treated rat brains could not be detected by Northern-blot analysis of total RNA, but Northern analysis with poly(A)-enriched RNA revealed that induction of MT mRNA in rat brain does occur with both Cd and LPS treatment.

A case of isolated benign non-traumatic inflammatory stricture of the mid portion of the common bile duct presenting with recurrent jaundice and cholangitis is reported. The histological features suggested that this was not due to sclerosing cholangitis.

Metallothionein (MT) has been extensively studied over the past several years because of its probable role in endogenous metal homeostasis and cellular protection. A large body of knowledge now exists describing the physicochemical properties of MT as well as the mechanisms involved in MT induction. It has been well established that MT protects tissues from metal toxicity by chelating metals that would otherwise be available to interact with and disrupt vital cell functions.

Progesterone and estrogen induce uterine epithelial cells to produce macrophage colony stimulating factor (CSF-1), and mouse uterine epithelial cells produce large amounts of CSF-1 during embryo development. The present study demonstrated that estrogen and progesterone each induce uterine CSF-1 gene transcription and translation detectable by Northern blotting and bioassay. Intrauterine CSF-1 production was greater in the presence of both estrogen and progesterone than following exposure to either hormone alone.

The degradation of metallothionein (MT) by rat liver was examined. Degradation of MT by liver homogenate was greater than by cytosol. In addition, MT degradation by the homogenate at pH 5.

A case with tetanus presenting with progressive dysphagia due to lower esophageal dysfunction is described. A barium swallow at the onset of symptoms showed esophageal dilatation with a smooth tapering at the lower end suggestive of achalasia cardia. The patient recovered from tetanus over the ensuing three weeks; repeat barium swallow at this time was normal, suggesting that esophageal dysfunction was a manifestation of tetanus.
