Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the prevalence of dog bites and human rabies deaths in India, where a significant portion of global rabies cases occurs, aiming to assess progress toward a 2030 elimination goal.
  • - A nationwide survey found that in a year, there were approximately 9.1 million dog bites in India, with 20.5% of those bitten not receiving necessary anti-rabies vaccinations (ARV).
  • - The study estimates around 5,726 human rabies deaths annually, indicating that, despite some progress, there's still a critical need for improved vaccination and prevention strategies.

Background: The National TB elimination programme (NTEP) is facilitating sub-national certification of "TB Free" status with benchmarks at every 20% reduction in incidence from the baseline of 2015. Drug consumption/sale is essential criteria to claim for the award. During the certification process in 10 districts of Madhya Pradesh in 2022, it was found that Nikshay Aushadhi (a web-based supply chain management portal) entries were incomplete or vacant in most of the districts and it was observed that quarterly drug requests were not sent using Nikshay Aushadhi.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic, nonscarring hair-loss disorder associated with significant quality-of-life impairment and limited treatment options. AA has been recently linked to atopy and shown to exhibit both Th1- and Th2-driven inflammation. However, a comprehensive molecular and cellular characterization across blood and scalp compartments in both atopic and nonatopic patients is lacking.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has a high unmet need for better treatments. Biopsies are considered the gold standard for studying molecular alterations in skin. A reproducible, minimally invasive approach is needed for longitudinal monitoring in trials and in pediatric populations.

Sclerotic-type cutaneous chronic graft-versus-host disease is a severe complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, with profound morbidity. A dearth of effective, targeted treatment options necessitates further investigation into the molecular mechanisms underlying this T-cell-mediated disease. In this study, we compared the transcriptome in skin biopsies from pediatric and young adult (aged <25 years) patients with sclerotic-type cutaneous chronic graft-versus-host disease (n = 7) with that in demographically matched healthy controls (n = 8) and patients with atopic dermatitis (n = 10) using RNA sequencing with RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry validation.

Understanding transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in institutions of higher education (IHEs) is important because these settings have potential for rapid viral spread. Here, we used genomic surveillance to retrospectively investigate transmission dynamics throughout the 2020-2021 academic year for the University of Idaho ("University"), a mid-sized IHE in a small rural town. We generated genome assemblies for 1168 SARS-CoV-2 samples collected during the academic year, representing 46.

Background: The term mucormycosis refers to any fungal infection caused by fungi belonging to the Mucorales order. The disease often manifests in the skin and also affects the lungs and the brain. A large number of Mucormycosis cases were detected in Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.

Understanding the neutral (demographic) and adaptive processes leading to the differentiation of species and populations is a critical component of evolutionary and conservation biology. In this context, recently diverged taxa represent a unique opportunity to study the process of genetic differentiation. Northern and southern Idaho ground squirrels (Urocitellus brunneus-NIDGS, and U.

Background: A prescription by a doctor may be taken as a reflection of physician's attitude to the disease. Inappropriate prescription has always been a serious problem in developing countries.

Objectives: The objective was to observe the current prescription practices for the management of diarrhea and pneumonia in Bhopal.

Introduction: High-risk groups (HRGs) have limited access to appropriate information and sexual and reproductive health services. They are a highly marginalized subgroup and their social stigma is a barrier for the use of health care and treatment.

Objectives: (1) To assess the knowledge regarding sexually transmitted infection (STI) infections among HRGs.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus are still of much public health concern. Screening of TB patients for diabetes will ensure early case detection, better management of diabetes, and better TB treatment outcome. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of diabetes in TB patients and their impact on treatment outcome of TB.

Article Synopsis
  • In herbivores, survival and reproduction heavily depend on diet and foraging behavior, making it crucial to understand their preferred plant species, especially for endangered species.
  • Identifying the diet of small herbivores like the northern Idaho ground squirrel is challenging due to their elusive nature and limitations of traditional dietary analysis methods.
  • Using DNA metabarcoding, researchers found a diverse diet comprising 120 plant species and observed selective foraging patterns, indicating that certain plant genera may enhance winter survival despite the squirrels being generalists in their diet.

Background: Maternal mortality is an indicator of state of maternal health services, status of women, women's health, and above all developments of nation.

Objectives: The objectives of the study were to identify the patterns and causes, medical as well as sociocultural, of maternal death as well as consider and list out the rights realization perspective of the mothers, their immediate families and the community at large.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three districts of Madhya Pradesh, India, for 1 year.

Tiger (Panthera tigris) populations are in danger across their entire range due to habitat loss, poaching and the demand for tiger parts. The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is an endangered apex predator with a population size estimated to be less than 200 in Nepal. In spite of strict wildlife protection laws, illegal trade of tiger parts is increasing; and Nepal has become one of the major sources and transit routes for poached wildlife parts.

Context: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) remains a worldwide global public health problem. About 95% of patients with TB live in the low and middle-income countries and more than 70% of patients with DM also live in the same countries, especially in South East Asia. Screening for diabetes in patients with TB will not only ensure early case detection but also better management of diabetes and will lead to better TB treatment outcome.

Background: Tiger populations are dwindling rapidly making it increasingly difficult to study their dispersal and mating behaviour in the wild, more so tiger being a secretive and solitary carnivore.

Methods: We used non-invasively obtained genetic data to establish the presence of 28 tigers, 22 females and 6 males, within the core area of Pench tiger reserve, Madhya Pradesh. This data was evaluated along with spatial autocorrelation and relatedness analyses to understand patterns of dispersal and philopatry in tigers within this well-managed and healthy tiger habitat in India.

Background: Majority of the tiger habitat in Indian subcontinent lies within high human density landscapes and is highly sensitive to surrounding pressures. These forests are unable to sustain healthy tiger populations within a tiger-hostile matrix, despite considerable conservation efforts. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR) in Northwest India is one such isolated forest which is rapidly losing its links with other tiger territories in the Central Indian landscape.

Bellary sheep population variability and structure was investigated genetically utilizing FAO recommended microsatellite markers. Genetic variation at 20 microsatellite loci, population structure, and genetic bottleneck hypothesis were examined. Estimates of genetic variability such as effective number of alleles and gene diversities revealed substantial genetic variation frequently displayed by microsatellite markers.
