Article Synopsis
  • Collagen is important for regenerative medicine but is commonly sourced from mammals, leading to issues like high costs and health risks; jellyfish-based collagen is proposed as a safer, more sustainable alternative.
  • Researchers created hydrogels from jellyfish collagen (Rhizostoma pulmo) using various crosslinking agents, analyzing their properties to determine their effectiveness for medical applications.
  • Results showed that the jellyfish collagen hydrogels met safety standards and enhanced the growth and activity of specific human stem cells, suggesting promising uses in regenerative medicine.

Purpose: To derive clinically useful information about the efficacy and tolerability of adjunctive treatment with perampanel for refractory epilepsy in an outpatient setting.

Method: We pooled retrospective casenotes data of adult patients with refractory epilepsy prescribed perampanel from 18 hospitals throughout UK and Ireland.

Results: Three hundred and ten patients were included (mean age 40.

Introduction: Lacosamide (LCS) is a new antiepileptic drug (AED) licensed in the European Union (EU) and United States (US) in 2008.

Aims: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of add-on LCS in an out-patient epilepsy clinic setting to obtain useful information for everyday practice.

Methods: We pooled data retrospectively from the case note of patients with refractory epilepsy in whom LCS had been prescribed in 19 hospitals across the United Kingdom.

Background: Valproate is widely accepted as a drug of first choice for patients with generalised onset seizures, and its broad spectrum of efficacy means it is recommended for patients with seizures that are difficult to classify. Lamotrigine and topiramate are also thought to possess broad spectrum activity. The SANAD study aimed to compare the longer-term effects of these drugs in patients with generalised onset seizures or seizures that are difficult to classify.

Background: Carbamazepine is widely accepted as a drug of first choice for patients with partial onset seizures. Several newer drugs possess efficacy against these seizure types but previous randomised controlled trials have failed to inform a choice between these drugs. We aimed to assess efficacy with regards to longer-term outcomes, quality of life, and health economic outcomes.

There is evidence that remote memory is affected by temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and by temporal lobectomy (TL) for the relief of epilepsy. However, remote memory is not routinely assessed when patients with epilepsy undergo neuropsychological testing either pre- or postsurgery. We present a literature review and detailed longitudinal case study of a woman (A.

Market demand places great emphasis in industry on product quality. Consequently, process monitoring and control have become important aspects of systems engineering. In this article we detail the results of a 2-year study focusing on the development of a condition monitoring system for a fed-batch fermentation system operated by Biochemie Gmbh in Austria.

The application of a novel monitoring technique, based on the use of acoustic emissions, is reported for a model high shear granulation process. It has been demonstrated that this technique is capable of monitoring changes in physical properties of powder material during granulation (particle size, flow properties and compression properties). The technique is non-invasive, sensitive and relatively inexpensive.

Many patients attending an Accident and Emergency (A&E) department with seizures never come into contact with a neurological service. This survey was designed to find out how many patients with epileptological emergencies come to A&E and how they are managed. Cases were identified using the computerized A&E database.

Postoperative epileptic seizures are recognised but rare. Psychogenic seizures and pseudostatus epilepticus are relatively common, particularly in the peri-operative period. Our series of five cases of postoperative pseudostatus epilepticus demonstrates that the failure to recognise the psychogenic nature of this condition may cause anaesthetists to give inappropriate and potentially harmful treatment.

We report successful bone marrow transplantation in a child with a severe form of alpha-mannosidosis, type I. There was complete resolution of the recurrent sinopulmonary disease and organomegaly, improvement in the bony disease, and stabilization of neurocognitive function.

Mechanical ventilation of patients with severe asthma is associated with elevated airway pressures that may contribute to increased physiologic dead space. To our knowledge, no previous reports have considered the effect of intravascular volume status on dead space fraction. We herein describe three patients whose dead space decreased by a mean of 4.

Objective: To report three patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) presenting with symptoms suggestive of cervical (one patient) and lumbar root disease.

Methods: Nerve conduction studies, EMG, and nerve biopsy were carried out, having found the nerve roots to be very enlarged on MRI, CT myelography, and at surgery.

Results: Clinically, peripheral nerve thickening was slight or absent.

Excessive daytime sleepiness is a disabling symptom of diverse etiologies. This article reviews the various, currently available diagnostic techniques that can be applied in the evaluation of childhood hypersomnolence, along with their merits and limitations. Normal polysomnographic data of children differ from those of adults.

Reaction conditions for conjugation of two fluorescent ortho-substituted aniline derivatives, 2-amino benzamide (2-AB) and 2-anthranilic acid (2-AA), to N- and O-glycans have been investigated. Conjugation conditions for attaching 2-AB and 2-AA to core-fucosylated and non-fucosylated glycans were developed using complex N-glycans radiolabeled at the nonreducing terminus with [3H]C6-galactose. Optimal conditions for each of the following reaction parameters were experimentally defined: [glycans], [2-AB] or [2-AA], solvent and acid composition, temperature and time of Schiff's base formation, nature of reductant, and temperature and time of reduction.
