Search for exotic baryons in 800 GeV pp-->pXi+/-piX reactions.

We report the results of a high-statistics, sensitive search for narrow baryon resonances decaying to Xi-pi-, Xi-pi+, Xi+pi-, and Xi+pi+. The only resonances observed are the well known Xi0(1530) and Xi0(1530). No evidence is found for the states near 1862 MeV, previously reported by NA49 [Phys.

Measurement of the D(s)+ lifetime.

A high statistics measurement of the D(s)+ lifetime from the Fermilab fixed-target FOCUS photoproduction experiment is presented. We describe the analysis of the two decay modes, D(s)+ --> phi(1020)pi+ and D(s)+ -->K*(892)0K+, used for the measurement. The measured lifetime is 507.

Orcein and litmus.

Orcein was separated into 14 dyes by partition chromatography. Their constitutions were determined mainly by spectroscopy and led to formulae that are derived from 7-amino-2-phenoxazone, 7-hydroxy-2-phenoxazone, and 7-amino-2-phenoxazime, and that were confirmed by syntheses. The major constituent of litmus is assembled polymerically from 7-hydroxy-2-phenoxazone chromophores.

A high statistics measurement of the Lambda(+)(c) lifetime.

We report results from a study of Lambda(0) polarization in the exclusive reaction pp --> p(f)(Lambda0K+) at 800-GeV/c. We observe a dependence of the polarization on the Lambda0K+ invariant mass with large (+71%) positive polarization at small mass (1.63-GeV/c(2)) and large (-43%) negative polarization at large mass (2.

Search for CP violation in the decays D+--> K(S)pi+ and D+-->K(S)K+.

A high-statistics sample of photoproduced charm from the FOCUS experiment has been used to search for direct CP violation in the decay rates for D+-->K(S)pi+ and D+-->K(S)K+. We have measured the following asymmetry parameters relative to D+-->K-pi+pi+: A(CP)(K(S)pi+) = (-1.6+/-1.

Measurement of the branching ratios of D(+) and D(+)(s) hadronic decays to four-body final states containing a K(S).

We have studied hadronic four-body decays of D(+) and D(+)(s) mesons with a K(S) in the final state using data recorded during the 1996-1997 fixed-target run of the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment FOCUS. We report a new branching ratio measurement of gamma(D(+)-->K(S)K-pi(+)pi(+))/gamma(D(+)-->K(S)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)) = 0.0768+/-0.

Diffractively produced charm final states in 800-GeV/c pp collisions.

We report the first observation of diffractively produced open charm in 800-GeV/c pp collisions of the type pp-->pD*X. We measure cross sections of sigma(diff)(D*+) = (0.185+/-0.

Study of the decay D0 --> K+pi-.

Using a large sample of photoproduced charm mesons from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab (FNAL-E831), we observe the decay D0-->K+pi- with a signal yield of 149+/-31 events compared to a similarly cut sample consisting of 36 760+/-195 D0-->K-pi+ events. We use the observed ratio of D0-->K+pi- to D0-->K-pi+ (0.404+/-0.

Observation of the Cabibbo-Suppressed Decay Ξ_{c}^{+} → pK^{-}π^{+}.

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay Ξ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+}. We observe 150±22±5 events for the signal. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Σ^{-} beam.

Vein graft-coated vascular stents: a feasibility study in a canine model.

Purpose: To evaluate different vein grafts for luminal coating of endovascular stents in normal canine arteries.

Methods: Twenty-four tantalum Strecker stents were coated with either autologous (n = 10), denatured heterologous (n = 11), or denatured homologous vein grafts (n = 3). The carotid artery (n = 11) and the iliac artery (n = 13) were stented using a transfemoral approach.

Diagnosis of bovine virus diarrhoea by two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

Two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for the diagnosis of bovine virus diarrhoea (BVD) are described: CHEKIT-BVD-VIRUS and CHEKIT-BVD-SERO. The first test detects virus antigen in leucocytes, resulting in identification of persistently-infected animals, while the second detects antibodies to BVD virus (BVDV). It is well known that even persistently-infected animals may have antibodies to heterologous BVDV strains.

An antigen capture test for the detection of cattle viremic with bovine viral diarrhoea virus--a comparison with BVD virus isolation from buffy coat cells in bovine kidney cells.

An antigen capture enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the detection of bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) viral antigen in peripheral blood lymphocytes of cattle was used for the screening of 241 animals. The test used a monoclonal antibody directed against a conserved antigenic domain of a nonstructural protein (p125/p80) of pestiviruses for antigen capture. Bound antigen was detected with a pestivirus-specific polyclonal peroxidase conjugate.

[Obstructive uropathies in early childhood--surgical intervention as renal protection].

Anomalies in the urinary tract can be noticed early by prenatal sonography. In the case of obstruction, a decompressive procedure can follow immediately after birth. Long-term results of renal function in cases of pyeloureteral obstructions after 6-10 years make it clear that results are better the earlier pyelon resection is performed.

[Clinical aspects, diagnosis and therapy of nesidioblastosis].

Hyperinsulinemia due to an excessive secretion of insulin independent on normal regulation is the most frequent cause of persistent neonatal hypoglycemia. We report on clinical course, diagnostic procedures and treatment of nesidioblastosis in three patients. Main symptoms observed in newborn period were hypoglycemia, respiratory embarrassment, cyanosis and convulsions.

[Experiences with nesidioblastosis].

Highly differentiated processes relating to insulin-generating cells of the endocrine pancreas are covered by the term of nesidioblastosis. The disease is primarily characterised by persistent hypoglycaemia, and it affects newborns and young infants. Diffuse nesidioblastosis is predominant, as compared to focal processes.

[Hamartoma of the liver in childhood].

Liver hamartoma is one of the very rare findings in childhood. It is a dysontogenetic malformation that grows clinically manifest with tumour-like appearance in the first or second year of age. Cystic and solid formations are described in this report.
