Article Synopsis
  • - Free radicals are important in various biological processes like cell communication and aging, and their levels increase in stressed cells, especially in liver diseases and cancer.
  • - Detecting free radicals is difficult due to their small size and short lifespan, but diamond-based quantum sensing has been developed to measure them in living cells.
  • - The method was adapted for fragile tissues, allowing researchers to successfully track free radical generation in liver slices under stress and observe the effects of antioxidants.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a growing healthcare problem with limited therapeutic options. Progress in this field depends on the availability of reliable preclinical models. Human precision-cut liver slices (PCLSs) have been employed to replicate the initiation of MASLD, but a comprehensive investigation into MASLD progression is still missing.

Background: Loss of muscle mass is linked with impaired quality of life and an increased risk of morbidity and premature mortality. Iron is essential for cellular processes such as energy metabolism, nucleotide synthesis and numerous enzymatic reactions. As the effects of iron deficiency (ID) on muscle mass and function are largely unknown, we aimed to assess the relation between ID and muscle mass in a large population-based cohort, and subsequently studied effects of ID on cultured skeletal myoblasts and differentiated myocytes.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the longitudinal associations between health literacy profiles and disease activity and medication prescription in patients with RA.

Methods: Patients with RA who previously completed the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and were assigned 1 of 10 distinct health literacy profiles based on cluster analysis were further aggregated into three groups: 'several health literacy limitations', 'some health literacy limitations' and 'good health literacy'. Linear mixed modelling (LMM) was used to analyse the association between health literacy groups and disease activity over the course of 1 year.

Patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) are at risk of developing acute hepatic decompensation and organ failures with an unraveled complex mechanism. An altered immune response toward insults in cirrhotic compared with healthy livers may contribute to the ACLF development. Therefore, we aim to investigate the differences in inflammatory responses between cirrhotic and healthy livers using human precision-cut liver slices (PCLSs) upon the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge.

In cervical cancer, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is overexpressed in 70-90% of the cases and has been associated with poor prognosis. EGFR-based therapy is currently being explored in cervical cancer. We investigated which EGFR ligand is primarily expressed in cervical cancer and which cell type functions as the major source of this ligand.

In conflict-affected states, vouchers have reduced barriers to reproductive health services and have enabled health programs to use targeted subsidies to increase uptake of specific health services. Vouchers can also be used to channel funds to public- and private-service providers and improve service quality. The Yamaan Foundation for Health and Social Development in Yemen and the Marie Stopes Society (MSS) in Pakistan-both working with Options Consultancy Services-have developed voucher programs that subsidize voluntary access to long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) and permanent methods (PMs) of family planning in their respective fragile countries.

Patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCCs) have a better prognosis than patients with non-HPV-induced OPSCC. The role of the immune response in this phenomenon is yet unclear. We studied the number of T cells, regulatory T cells (Tregs), T helper 17 (Th17) cells and IL-17(+) non-T cells (mainly granulocytes) in matched HPV-positive and HPV-negative OPSCC cases (n = 162).

Background: Deep invasion of the normal surrounding tissue by primary cervical cancers is a prognostic parameter for postoperative radiotherapy and relatively worse survival. However, patients with tumor-specific immunity in the blood at the time of surgery displayed a much better disease free survival. Here we analyzed if this was due to a more tumor-rejecting immune population in the tumor.

Cervical cancer is typically well infiltrated by immune cells. Because of the intricate relationship between cancer cells and immune cells, we aimed to identify both cancer cell and immune cell expressed biomarkers. Using a novel approach, we isolated RNA from flow-sorted viable EpCAM+ tumor epithelial cells and CD45+ tumor-infiltrating immune cells obtained from squamous cell cervical cancer samples (n = 24).

Galectins are proteins that bind β-galactoside sugars and provide a new type of potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in cancer. Galectin-1, -3 and -9 have become the focus of different research groups, but their expression and function in cervical cancer is still unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the phenotype of galectin-1, -3 and -9 expressing cells and the association with clinico-pathological parameters in cervical cancer.

Both IL-17 and Th17 cells have been ascribed tumor promoting as well as tumor suppressing functions. We reviewed the literature on correlations between IL-17 versus Th17 cells and survival in human cancer, following the PRISMA guidelines. Serum, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue and peripheral blood samples were most frequently studied.

The role of interleukin (IL)-17 in cancer remains controversial. In view of the growing interest in the targeting of IL-17, knowing its cellular sources and clinical implications is crucial. In the present study, we unraveled the phenotype of IL-17 expressing cells in cervical cancer using immunohistochemical double and immunofluorescent triple stainings.

Background: The tumour microenvironment comprises a network of immune response and vascularization factors. From this network, we identified immunological and vascularization gene expression clusters and the correlations between the clusters. We subsequently determined which factors were correlated with patient survival in cervical carcinoma.

In the final version of our article entitled, "Lessons from sexual and reproductive health voucher program design and function: a comprehensive review" the authors inadvertently failed to acknowledge the role of International Union of Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). IUSSP colleagues kindly reviewed early drafts of the manuscript presented at an IUSSP workshop in Bangkok August 2012 and had specifically requested that we recognize their feedback. We therefore feel obliged to acknowledge IUSSP.

Cervical adenocarcinoma comprises approximately 15 % of cervical cancer cases. This histological subtype has different characteristics than cervical squamous cell carcinoma, which may influence disease progression. To study whether the infiltration of T cell subpopulations was correlated with cervical adenocarcinoma patient survival, similar to squamous cell carcinoma, the tumor-infiltrating T cells, Tregs, Th17 cells and IL-17(+) cell frequencies were analyzed in a cohort of cervical adenocarcinoma patients (n = 67).

It is increasingly clear that Millennium Development Goal 4 and 5 will not be achieved in many low- and middle-income countries with the weakest gains among the poor. Recognizing that there are large inequalities in reproductive health outcomes, the post-2015 agenda on universal health coverage will likely generate strategies that target resources where maternal and newborn deaths are the highest. In 2012, the United States Agency for International Development convened an Evidence Summit to review the knowledge and gaps on the utilization of financial incentives to enhance the quality and uptake of maternal healthcare.

Background: Developing countries face challenges in financing healthcare; often the poor do not receive the most basic services. The past decade has seen a sharp increase in the number of voucher programs, which target output-based subsidies for specific services to poor and underserved groups. The dearth of literature that examines lessons learned risks the wheel being endlessly reinvented.

Background: Adolescents' health is greatly influenced by social determinants, including gender norms. Although research has shown that there is an association between gender attitudes and adolescents' sexual behaviour, few studies have assessed this relationship carefully. The Attitudes toward Women Scale for Adolescents (AWSA) is widely used to assess gender attitudes among adolescents; however, to our knowledge it has not been applied in Latin America.

Cervical carcinogenesis is a consequence of persistent infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs). Recent studies indicate that HPV-transformed cells actively instruct their microenvironment to promote carcinogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that cervical cancer cells activate monocytes to produce their own CCL2 for further monocyte recruitment and reprogram their function during differentiation and maturation to dendritic cells (DCs).

One of the hallmarks of cancer is the influx of myeloid cells. In our study, we investigated the constitution of tumor-infiltrating myeloid cells and their relationship to other tumor-infiltrating immune cells, tumor characteristics and the disease-specific survival of patients with cervical cancer (CxCa). Triple-color immunofluorescence confocal microscopy was used to locate, identify and quantify macrophages (CD14), their maturation status (CD33) and their polarization (CD163) in a cohort of 86 patients with cervical carcinoma.

Background: Adolescents in Latin America are at high risk for unwanted and unplanned pregnancies, which often result in unsafe abortions or poor maternal health outcomes. Both young men and women in the region face an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections due to inadequate sexual and reproductive health information, services and counselling. To date, many adolescent health programmes have targeted a single determinant of sexual and reproductive health.

Background: Previously, we have shown that low IL-12p40 mRNA expression by cervical cancer cells is associated with a poor survival of cervical cancer patients. As IL-12p40 is both a subcomponent of interleukin (IL)-12 and IL-23, the aim of this study was to elucidate the role of IL-12p40 in cervical cancer.

Methods: We have measured the expression of IL-23p19 mRNA, IL-12p35 mRNA and IL-12p40 mRNA using mRNA in situ hybridisation.
