Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Expression Helps Distinguish Pleomorphic Adenoma from Histologic Mimics.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common biphasic type of salivary gland tumour to arise in adults. It is a biphasic tumour composed of both luminal (ductal) cells and abluminal (basal and myoepithelial) cells. Other biphasic salivary gland type tumours, both benign and malignant, can mimic PA, especially on small biopsies.

Evaluating small vessel neutrophils as a marker for sepsis.

A retrospective case-control study of 100 sepsis autopsy cases and 103 controls over a 9-year period was conducted to analyze patterns of neutrophils in small caliber vessels of the liver, heart, and lungs in relation to sepsis as the cause of death. Data extracted included demographics of the decedent, cause of death, presence of conditions that could interfere with an inflammatory response, history of hospitalization, and results of microbiology cultures. Histologic sections of the liver, heart, and lungs were assessed.

Is Elective Status a Predictor of Poor Survival in Liver Retransplantation?

Background: Orthotopic liver retransplantation (reLT) is considered to have poorer outcomes than primary transplantation. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of medical urgency status as a predictor of patient survival after reLT.

Methods: Forty-nine patients who underwent reLT were included in this retrospective study.

Hepatic abscess: a rare complication after liver transplant.

Background: This study was conducted to evaluate the predisposing factors, microbiology, treatment, and outcomes associated with hepatic abscess, a rare but serious complication which may accur after an orthotopic liver transplant (OLT).

Methods: This was a retrospective study based on a prospectively maintained database of 1100 patients who underwent OLT at the Medical University of Warsaw. An abscess was defined on imaging as solitary or multiple localized parenchymal collections in patients with clinical signs of infection, with or without positive cultures from blood or abscess aspirate.

Serum levels of HGF, IL-6, and TGF-α after benign liver tumor resection.

Purpose: Literature is void of data on the relationship between pre- and postoperative levels of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor growth factor α (TGF-α) after liver resection performed for particular benign liver tumors. The purpose of this study was to assess whether there is a different degree of liver regeneration through the kinetics of HGF, IL-6, and TGF-α in 2 particular types of benign liver lesions.

Material/methods: The study included 9 patients diagnosed with hepatic hemangioma and 13 patients with focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) who underwent liver resection.

A reversible decrease in ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase carboxylation activity caused by the aggregation of the enzyme's large subunit is triggered in response to the exposure of moderate irradiance-grown plants to low irradiance.

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) is highly regulated in response to fluctuations in the environment, including changes in irradiance. However, no complex data are available on Rubisco regulatory mechanisms triggered in plants which are submitted to moderate-low irradiance shift. Therefore, we investigated in a comprehensive way the changes at the level of amount of Rubisco protein, its structural organization and carboxylase activity of the holoenzyme as triggered by exposure of moderate irradiance-grown Arabidopsis thaliana plants to low irradiance conditions.

Conidia of Trichoderma virens as a phosphorus source for mycorrhizal Pinus sylvestris seedlings.

In this study, the mobilization and further translocation of phosphorus from conidia of saprotrophic fungus Trichoderma virens into Pinus sylvestris seedlings by nondestructive measuring of (32)P was assessed. The radioactive phosphorus flux from the conidia to the Scots pine seedlings forming mycorrhiza with Laccaria laccata and Suillus bovinus amounted up to 27.82% and 7.

Imaging of biophoton emission from electrostimulated skin acupuncture point jg4: effect of light enhancers.

Using an ultrasensitive CCD camera, an extremely low light intensity from the acupuncture-sensitive point JG4 at the left hand was recorded. As the intensity of the light was very weak and the time of electrostimulation exceeded the recommended period, the quality of biophoton images was poor. Chemiluminescent and fluorescent hydrophilic, hydrophobic and amphyphilic molecular probes were used to: (i) ensure penetration of probes into skin, (ii) enhance the intensity of BP emission, (iii) shorten time and (iv) obtain information about mechanisms of biophotons generation in EAP-sensitive points and channels.

[Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee joint using Eriksson's method].

The reconstruction of the anterior crucial ligament of the knee joint with the method of Eriksson has been performed in 10 patients of 17 to 42 years. In some patients complicated injuries of joint structures were observed. Control examinations included 7 patients in the period of observation over 6 months after the operation.

[Determination of abrasive properties of toothpastes by means of copper abrasion].

The results are presented of the investigations of the proposed method for determination of the abrasive properties of toothpastes and raw materials used for their production. The method is based on brushing of copper surface with the studied paste in a device of own design, followed by chemical analysis of copper content in the mass after brushing. The optimal parameters of the work of the abrasive device were determined and the method for determination of copper content is described.

[The use of Auger's electron spectroscopy for the study of chemical composition of superficial layer of enamel].

The method of chemical composition analysis of the metal surface layers based on Auger's electron spectroscopy was adapted to the evaluation of the changes in the chemical composition of bovine and human enamel. The enamel was damaged by means or hydrochloric acid and subsequently subjected to two-stage remineralization procedure.

[Two-stage method of enamel remineralization].

Two toothpastes were compared in vitro for assessing the effectiveness of a two-stage process of enamel remineralization after damage inflicted by means of acid. One paste contained added free anions essential for the remineralization process, the other paste contained analogous free cations. The remineralization process was based on sorption of free PO4(3-) or Ca2+ ions at the site of damaged enamel and development of calcium phosphate in situ.

[Studies on the remineralization of enamel using radioisotopes].

Enamel of human and bovine teeth was found to show sorption of free calcium ions after damage caused by short-term exposure to diluted hydrochloric acid or mechanical damage. The experiment was carried out using radioisotopes 32P and 45Ca and it was shown that majority of incorporated ions remained in the enamel after prolonged washing out with water as well as after brushing with toothpaste. A considerable stability of binding of the incorporated phosphate ions was noted in the damaged enamel after exposure to calcium salt solution, and marked stability of binding of the incorporated calcium ions after exposure to phosphate solution.

Examination and analysis of seat belt loading marks.

In moderate to severe collisions, large decelerations and hence large forces are generated. Various components of the seat belt system are loaded, and physical evidence of this loading may be observed long after the collision event. Such witness marks result from interaction between different components of the restraint system, or between the restraint and portions of the vehicle interior.
