Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma - rare diagnosis in a Caucasian woman: case report and review of the literature.

Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP) is a rare benign pulmonary tumour, most reported cases of PSP are from Eastern Asia, with a female to male ratio of 5:1, and average age at diagnosis in the 5 decade. We present the case of a 63-year-old Caucasian woman diagnosed with PSP who underwent a left lower lobe basal segmentectomy with systematic nodal dissection, performed via video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma-a rare cause of right pleural effusion and multiple primary nodules: Case report & review of the literature.

Pulmonary epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (PEH) is a rare vascular neoplasm. The thoracic manifestation of this disorder is identified via three major imaging patterns, namely multiple primary nodules, diffuse infiltrative pleural thickening, and multiple pulmonary reticulonodular opacities. The commonest pattern of presentation is bilateral multiple nodules.

Simulating Large-scale Models of Brain Neuronal Circuits using Google Cloud Platform.

Biophysically detailed modeling provides an unmatched method to integrate data from many disparate experimental studies, and manipulate and explore with high precision the resultin brain circuit simulation. We developed a detailed model of the brain motor cortex circuits, simulating over 10,000 biophysically detailed neurons and 30 million synaptic connections. Optimization and evaluation of the cortical model parameters and responses was achieved via parameter exploration using grid search parameter sweeps and evolutionary algorithms.

Using Google Street View to examine associations between built environment characteristics and U.S. health outcomes.

Neighborhood attributes have been shown to influence health, but advances in neighborhood research has been constrained by the lack of neighborhood data for many geographical areas and few neighborhood studies examine features of nonmetropolitan locations. We leveraged a massive source of Google Street View (GSV) images and computer vision to automatically characterize national neighborhood built environments. Using road network data and Google Street View API, from December 15, 2017-May 14, 2018 we retrieved over 16 million GSV images of street intersections across the United States.

A Randomized Controlled Trial of a Trauma-Informed Support, Skills, and Psychoeducation Intervention for Survivors of Torture and Related Trauma in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq.

Supportive counseling type interventions are frequently provided to meet the mental health needs of populations in emergency and post-conflicts contexts, but it has seldom been rigorously evaluated. Existing evaluations from low- and middle-income countries provide mixed evidence of effectiveness. While Iraqi Kurdistan experienced relative stability following the fall of Saddam Hussein's government, the population in the northern Dohuk region has continued to experience periodic violence due to conflicts with neighboring Turkey as well as more recent ISIS-associated violence.

Removal of copper ions from aqueous solutions via adsorption on carbon nanocomposites.

The development of technologies for water purification is critical to meet the global challenges of insufficient water supply and inadequate sanitation. Among all wastewater treatments, adsorption is globally recognized as the most promising method because of its versatility and economic feasibility. Herein, the removal of copper ions (Cu(II)) from aqueous solutions through adsorption on free-standing hybrid papers comprised of a mixture between graphene and different types of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was examined.

Patient and family member needs during the perioperative period.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the needs and experiences of patients and family members throughout the entire perioperative experience.

Design And Methods: Using a descriptive study design, a convenience sample of patients and family members were surveyed about their needs and how well those needs were met during the perioperative period. Survey questions were adapted from valid and reliable patient and family needs surveys.

Stream water quality and service learning in an introductory biology class.

Northland College is a small environmental liberal arts college in northern Wisconsin near Lake Superior. In the fall of 2007 and 2008 students in a mixed science majors/non-majors introductory biology course engaged in a semester-long, service-learning project to monitor E. coli in city stormwater draining into Bay City Creek, a small stream that flows through campus and the town of Ashland before flowing into Lake Superior.

Haemoglobinopathy screening in an maternity hospital.

Recent changes in population movement mean that an increasing number of mothers who deliver in Ireland and their infants are at risk of haemoglobinopathies, in particular sickle cell anaemia. Early detection of sickle cell anaemia improves outcome. For this reason, many hospitals have established antenatal and neonatal screening programmes targeting high-risk ethnic groups.

Neonatal transportation: the effects of a national neonatal transportation programme.

Background: The transport of critically ill newborns by specialised transport teams has been shown to be associated with a significant improvement in their clinical condition on arrival at the receiving hospital.

Aim: To determine if the National Neonatal Transport Programme introduced in 2001 improved clinical condition of newborns at the end of transfer.

Methods: A retrospective study of all 176 patients transported by the National Neonatal Transport Programme between March 2001 and March 2002.

Placental fetal thrombotic vasculopathy is associated with neonatal encephalopathy.

Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the term infant, and many cases have an antepartum, rather than an intrapartum, etiology. Chronic processes such as thrombosis result in changes in the placenta. We sought to determine whether histopathological examination of the placenta in cases of NE, focusing on these changes, could identify significant antenatal processes that are not recognized by clinical assessment alone.

Predicting the rate of cognitive decline in aging and early Alzheimer disease.

Objectives: To determine prognostic factors affecting the course of Alzheimer disease (AD) and to determine the role of region-specific brain volumes as predictors of cognitive decline.

Methods: Longitudinal data from 166 normal elderly individuals and 59 early AD patients were analyzed. Brain volumes were extracted from MRI scans using semiautomated recursive segmentation methods.

Protection from solar simulated radiation-induced DNA damage in cultured human fibroblasts by three commercially available sunscreens.

Exposure to solar radiation can produce both acute and chronic changes in the skin, including sunburn, edema, immunosuppression, premature skin aging, and skin cancer. At the cellular level, solar radiation can produce adverse structural and functional changes in membrane proteins and lipids and in chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA. The increasing awareness of these adverse effects has led the public to demand better photoprotection.

Outcome of infants born to hepatitis C infected women.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can be transmitted vertically from mother to infant, either late in pregnancy or at delivery.

Aims: To determine the outcome of infants born to HCV infected women, to characterise epidemiology and to design an appropriate infant monitoring schedule.

Methods: Three hundred and fourteen infants, born to 296 HCV positive women between 1994 and 1999 were monitored for a median of 18 months (range 1-52).

An atypical case suggesting the possibility of overlap between Malpuech and Juberg-Hayward syndromes.

Malpuech syndrome and Juberg-Hayward syndrome are considered to be distinct disorders of orofacial clefting. We present details of a patient whose clinical presentation closely resembles the profile of Malpuech syndrome, but whose radiological features are more in keeping with published observations in Juberg-Hayward patients.

Hepatitis C infection in an Irish antenatal population.

Background: Hepatitis C infection (HCV) has an estimated seroprevalence of 1-2% in women of child-bearing age and vertical transmission rate of 5-15%.

Aims: To characterise the current trends of HCV in an Irish antenatal population.

Methods: Infants of HCV seropositive women, born 1994 to 1999, were referred to the Paediatric Infectious Diseases service.

The use of silver-stained "comets" to visualize DNA damage and repair in normal and Xeroderma pigmentosum fibroblasts after exposure to simulated solar radiation.

The alkaline and neutral comet assays have been widely used to assess DNA damage and repair in individual cells after in vivo or in vitro exposure to chemical or physical genotoxins. Cells processed under neutral conditions generate comets primarily from DNA double strand breaks, whereas under alkaline conditions, comets arise from DNA single and double strand breaks and alkali-labile lesions. A modified version of the alkaline comet assay, as described here, used silver stain to visualize the comets and a Gelbond base to facilitate the manipulation and processing of samples.

Quantifying aggregation of IgE-FcepsilonRI by multivalent antigen.

Aggregation of cell surface receptors by multivalent ligand can trigger a variety of cellular responses. A well-studied receptor that responds to aggregation is the high affinity receptor for IgE (FcepsilonRI), which is responsible for initiating allergic reactions. To quantify antigen-induced aggregation of IgE-FcepsilonRI complexes, we have developed a method based on multiparameter flow cytometry to monitor both occupancy of surface IgE combining sites and association of antigen with the cell surface.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) colonisation among expectant Irish mothers.

Group B streptococci (GBS) have been recognised for more than three decades as a serious cause of perinatal morbidity and neonatal mortality. The aim of this study was to accurately determine the prevalence of GBS carriage and the serotype distribution among pregnant Irish women. 504 women attending antenatal clinics had two swabs (one perianal and one low vaginal) taken in the last four weeks of their pregnancy.
