Environ Monit Assess
July 2024
Ecological monitoring is a vital tool to help us assess habitat condition and understand the mechanism(s) for habitat change. Yet many countries struggle to meet their monitoring requirements in part due to the high assessment workload. Rapid ecological assessment methods may have an important role to play in this regard.

Objective: To determine whether assisted ventilation in extremely preterm infants (23 0/7 to 28 6/7 weeks' gestational age [GA]) followed by cord clamping reduces intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) or early death.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This phase 3, 1:1, parallel-stratified randomized clinical trial conducted at 12 perinatal centers across the US and Canada from September 2, 2016, through February 21, 2023, assessed IVH and early death outcomes of extremely preterm infants randomized to receive 120 seconds of assisted ventilation followed by cord clamping vs delayed cord clamping for 30 to 60 seconds with ventilatory assistance afterward.
Significance: High grade serous ovarian cancer is the most deadly gynecological cancer, and it is now believed that most cases originate in the fallopian tubes (FTs). Early detection of ovarian cancer could double the 5-year survival rate compared with late-stage diagnosis. Autofluorescence imaging can detect serous-origin precancerous and cancerous lesions in FT and ovaries with good sensitivity and specificity.

Using four different driving wavelengths and a range of intensities at each wavelength for high-harmonic generation, we observe a well-characterized minimum in the harmonic emission that exhibits both a wavelength and intensity dependence. Using the intensity dependence at each driving wavelength, we classify the minimum as due to either a structural two-center interference or dynamic multichannel interference, consistent with previous literature.

Such variability benefits are often accounted for by assuming that learners are developing some general task schema or structure. However much of this research has neglected to account for differences in similarity between varied and constant training conditions.

These wetlands support diverse communities but have often been degraded by a lack of growing-season fires that historically maintained the vegetation structure. In the absence of fire, wetlands develop a dense mid-story of woody vegetation that increases canopy cover and decreases the amount of herbaceous vegetation.

The original hit was a selective inhibitor of LpxA with no activity against LpxA. The biochemical potency of the series was optimized through an X-ray crystallography-supported medicinal chemistry program, resulting in compounds with nanomolar activity against LpxA (best half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) <5 nM) and cellular activity against (best minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 4 μg/mL).

Introduction: Geriatric hip fractures are a major, costly public health issue, expected to increase in incidence and expense with the aging population. As healthcare transitions towards value-based care, understanding cost drivers of hip fracture treatment will be necessary to perform adequate risk adjustment. Historically, cost has been variable and difficult to determine.

Introduction: Geriatric intertrochanteric (IT) femur fractures are a common and costly injury, expected to increase in incidence as the population ages. Understanding cost drivers will be essential for risk adjustments, and the surgeon's choice of implant may be an opportunity to reduce the overall cost of care. This study was purposed to identify the relationship between implant type and inpatient cost of care for isolated geriatric IT fractures.

Efforts to quantify age-size relationships are hampered by difficulties in aging individuals in wild populations. In addition, species with complex life-histories often show distinct shifts in growth that cannot be readily accommodated by traditional modelling techniques.

The current American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) guidelines released in 2014 for the treatment of geriatric hip fractures recommend the utilization of monopolar cemented constructs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate hip hemiarthroplasty implant cost variability and implant selection trends from 2006 to 2018.

The optimal treatment regimen, pattern of disease progression and utility of sentinel lymph node biopsy are not established.

Experimentally, the molecules are exposed to two laser pulses with a relative time delay. The first, weaker pulse induces a nuclear rotational wave packet within the molecules, which are then ionized by the second, stronger pulse.

We implemented a guideline for appropriate acid suppressant use in hematology-oncology patients. This intervention resulted in a sustained reduction in proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use without an increase in rates of gastrointestinal bleeding. Practice guidelines are effective in reducing PPI use, which is associated with risk of Clostridioides difficile infection.

The retrieved phases exhibit a complex behavior as a function of photon energy, which is the consequence of the interference between paths involving various resonances. In spite of this complexity, we show that phases for individual resonances can still be obtained from experiment by using an extension of the Fano model of atomic resonances.

We show that a weak attosecond-pulse-train ionization seed that is properly synchronized with the strong driving mid-infrared laser field can produce experimentally relevant high-harmonic generation (HHG) signals, from which we extract both the spectral amplitude and the target-specific phase (group delay). We also show that further processing of the HHG signal can be used to achieve molecular-frame resolution, i.

Methods: Stool specimens were collected from patients admitted for chemotherapy or stem cell transplant in the setting of the evaluation of diarrhea from February 2017 until November 2017. Microbiome characteristics were compared among those exposed to levofloxacin prophylaxis vs those who received BSBL antibiotics.
We present molecular-frame measurements of the recombination dipole matrix element (RDME) in CO, NO, and carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecules using high-harmonic spectroscopy. Both the amplitudes and phases of the RDMEs exhibit clear imprints of a two-center interference minimum, which moves in energy with the molecular alignment angle relative to the laser polarization. We find that whereas the angle dependence of this minimum is consistent with the molecular geometry in CO and NO, it behaves very differently in OCS; in particular, the phase shift which accompanies the two-center minimum changes sign for different alignment angles.

Here, we evaluated the association between transient tachypnea of newborns and the degree and duration of predelivery maternal hypotension during spinal anesthesia for elective cesarean delivery.
Methods: Demographic data, details of anesthetic management, blood pressure measurements, and vasopressor requirement preceding delivery were compared between transient tachypnea newborns (n = 30) and healthy neonates (n = 151) with normal respiratory function born via elective cesarean delivery between July 2015 and February 2016.
Patients undergoing stem cell transplant (SCT) for the treatment of hematologic malignancy are at increased risk for central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). The use of prophylactic antibiotics to prevent CLABSIs in the setting of autologous SCT is of unclear benefit. We aimed to evaluate the impact of levofloxacin prophylaxis on reducing CLABSIs in this high-risk population.

We report a mild, photoredox-catalyzed reaction for sulfonylation of aniline derivatives with sulfinate salts, and demonstrate the utility of the method by the late-stage functionalization of drugs. Key features of the method are the straightforward generation of sulfonyl radicals from bench-stable sulfinate salts and the use of simple aniline derivatives as convenient readily available coupling partners.
