The detection of lymph node metastases is essential for breast cancer staging, although it is a tedious and time-consuming task where the sensitivity of pathologists is suboptimal. Artificial intelligence (AI) can help pathologists detect lymph node metastases, which could help alleviate workload issues. We studied how pathologists' performance varied when aided by AI.

The importance of the PapR C-terminus and amide protons in mediating quorum sensing in Bacilluscereus.

The opportunistic human pathogen Bacillus cereus controls the expression of key infection-promoting phenotypes using bacterial quorum sensing (QS). QS signal transduction within the species is controlled by an autoinducing peptide, PapR, and its cognate receptor, PlcR, indicating that the PlcR:PapR interface is a prime target for QS inhibitor development. The C-terminal region of the peptide (PapR; ADLPFEF) has been successfully employed as a scaffold to develop potent QS modulators.

Preferential Association of Lissencephaly-1 Gene Expression with CD133+ Glioblastoma Cells.

Lissencephaly-1 (Lis1) protein is a dynein-binding protein involved in neural stem cell division, morphogenesis and motility. To determine whether Lis1 is a key factor in glioblastoma, we evaluated its expression and function in CD133+ glioblastoma cells. Global, Lis1 gene expression is similar in glioblastoma and normal samples.

Remote motor system metabolic profile and surgery outcome in cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

OBJECTIVE In patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), the motor system may undergo progressive functional/structural changes rostral to the lesion, and these changes may be associated with clinical disability. The extent to which these changes have a prognostic value in the clinical recovery after surgical treatment is not yet known. In this study, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was used to test 2 primary hypotheses.

Acute Cholecystitis as a Complication after Colonoscopy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Unlabelled: Acute cholecystitis after colonoscopy is a rare event, with less than 10 cases described in the literature. We report the case of a male patient with silent gallstones who underwent colonoscopy for follow-up of his Crohn's disease. The colonoscopy revealed erosions in the terminal ileum, from which biopsies were taken.

Detection of small abnormal B-Lymphoblast populations at diagnosis of chronic myelogenous leukemia, BCR-ABL1+: Incidence, phenotypic features, and clinical implications.

Background: According to the 2008 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumors of the Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues, the finding of B lymphoblasts in the blood or bone marrow of a patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia, BCR-ABL1+ (CML) should raise a concern for progression of the disease to B-lymphoblastic blast phase. Data addressing the incidence and phenotypic features of abnormal B lymphoblasts in CML, and whether the detection of B lymphoblasts inexorably heralds blast phase in CML, though, are limited.

Methods: We reviewed a consecutive series of patients with newly diagnosed CML who had undergone bone marrow examination with flow cytometric immunophenotyping.

Immunohistochemical analysis of GFAP-δ and nestin in cerebral astrocytomas.

GFAP-δ, the delta isoform of the glial fibrillary acidic protein, is particularly expressed in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the brain. GFAP-δ positive cells in the SVZ co-express the neural stem cells (NSCs) marker nestin. According to the theory of glioma oncogenesis, transformation of a cell population with stem features which resides in the SVZ could be the origin of astrocytomas.

Pulmonary hemorrhage with capillaritis secondary to mycophenolate mofetil in a heart-transplant patient.

Immunosuppressive drugs are an integral part of therapy in organ transplantation. However, they are not without side effects, and although rare, these agents should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary complications in patients receiving transplants. We present a case of a patient who developed acute respiratory failure 7 days after orthotopic heart transplantation and who had been on both mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and tacrolimus agents.

Traumatic brain injury in infants and toddlers, 0-3 years old.

Object: Children 0-3 years old present a completely different neurotraumatic pathology. The growing and the development processes in this age group imply specific anatomical and pathophysiological features of the skull, subarachnoid space, CSF flow, and brain. Most common specific neurotraumatic entities in children 0-3 years old are cephalhematoma, subaponeurotic (subgaleal) hematoma, diastatic skull fracture, grow skull fracture, depressed ('ping-pong') skull fracture, and extradural hematoma.

Perioperative management of patients with lung carcinoma and cerebral metastases.

Objective: The present study proposes to present the importance of perioperative therapeutic management in survival prolongation and the quality of life for patients that have undergone surgery for cerebral metastases secondary to pulmonary tumors.

Method: During 2001-2009, 40 patients with ages between 43-74 years have been diagnosed in our clinic with pulmonary tumor and cerebral metastases. The patients presented single cerebral lesion (excepting one patient with 2 cerebral metastases) and pulmonary tumor.

Option for surgical management of cerebral haematoma: case report.

A 48-year-old male patient, a surgeon, displayed a right temporo-occipital cerebral haematoma (5 x 7 cm). He had a history of chronic left occipital migraine-like cephalalgia from the age of 16 and hypertension was diagnosed when he was 42 years old. As therapy, he used ACE inhibitors, nifedipine and clonidine for hypertension and for cephalalgia a combination of aspirin, phenacetin and caffeine.
