Activity of substantia nigra neurons in the cat brain during a self-initiated behavioral act.

Cats were trained to perform a self-initiated behavioral act in the form of an operant food-obtaining reflex with defined time requirements. Activity was recorded from 50 dopaminergic neurons (identified in terms of their low frequency of background activity and long action potentials) and 67 nondopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and adjacent region. Dopaminergic neurons were the more responsive.

[Substantia nigra neurons activity in cat brain during realization of self-initiation of behavioural action].

Activity of 50 dopamine and 67 non-dopamine neurons was studied during motivated behavioural actions in the cat brain black substance. 66% of former and 88% of latter neurons modified their activity before and during autoinitiated voluntary movements. The data obtained suggest that dopamine neurons are involved in organisation of movements in behavioural actions with cognitive components.

Localisation of immunoreactive factor VIII, nitric oxide synthase, substance P, endothelin-1 and 5-hydroxytryptamine in human postmortem middle cerebral artery.

This pre-embedding electron-immunocytochemical study investigated the localisation of endothelial (type III) and neuronal (type I) isoforms of nitric oxide synthase, substance P, endothelin-1 and 5-hydroxytryptamine in the human middle cerebral artery taken up to 40 h postmortem. To ¿recover' from the anoxic period some of the vessels were incubated in oxygenated Krebs solution prior to the immunoprocedure. At this long postmortem time, immunoreactivity to type III and type I nitric oxide synthase, substance P, endothelin-1 and 5-hydroxytryptamine was found in a subpopulation of intact cells present in the vessel intima; immunoreactivity to type I nitric oxide synthase was also observed in a subpopulation of adventitial perivascular nerve fibres.

Evidence for the presence of early vascular lesions in newborn Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits.

We have investigated the morphology of the aortic wall of newborn New Zealand White (NZW) (n = 10) and newborn Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) (n = 10) rabbits. In both strains, lipid levels (cholesterol and triglycerides) were elevated above the concentrations expected. This was particularly evident in WHHL.
