The disposition of 8-methyl-8-azabicyclo[3,2,1]octan-3-yl 3,5-dichlorobenzoate (MDL 72,222; 1), a potent 5-hydroxytryptamine antagonist, and its N-demethylated and N-oxide metabolites was studied in dogs and monkeys. After single, intravenous doses of 1 at 5 mg/kg, the mean terminal half-lives of 1 in plasma were 2.6 h in the dog and 3.

Among three HIV-1 laboratory isolates (IIIB, MN, and RF), BAT085 neutralized only IIIB infection of CEM-SS cells, whereas G3-136 neutralized both IIIB and RF. These antibodies also neutralized a few primary HIV-1 isolates in the infection of activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Functionally significant heterotopic ossification (Brooker class III or IV) developed in 23% of those patients who did not receive adequate prophylactic irradiation or indomethacin. Irradiation and indomethacin were effective in the prevention of severe heterotopic ossification.

Rod outer segments (ROS) gradually accumulated [3H]DHA as a dense, heavily labeled region that arrived at the distal tips by 28 days post-injection. Autoradiographic analysis at the time of maximal shedding and phagocytosis (1-2 hr after the onset of light) showed diffusely (before 28 days) and heavily (after 28 days) labeled phagosomes in RPE cells.

As it is required, 18:3 omega 3 is elongated and desaturated to 22:6 omega 3, then released into the circulation with lipoprotein carriers. RPE cells remove the 22:6 omega 3 from the choriocapillaris and subsequently release it to the retina proper.

Moreover, subretinal membranes contained numerous isolated HLA-DR- and -DQ-expressing cells, including glial, pigment epithelial and vascular endothelial cells.

The utility of the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) in the diagnosis of depression was examined in an outpatient sample of 29 stroke patients. Results indicated that the DST's sensitivity was 15%, its specificity was 67%, and its positive predictive value was 48%. These findings suggest that the DST yields no more information than would be gained from random assignment of the diagnosis of depression.

An initial diffuse labeling throughout the retina was detected by autoradiography and was followed by an active steady increase in labeled photoreceptor cells. After 6 hr of incubation, 92% of the label was concentrated in photoreceptor cells.

Immunostaining procedures were used to identify immunoglobulin and complement deposits, to visualize class II antigen expression by proliferating cells, and to determine eventual infiltration by cells of the immune system. Diffuse deposits of IgG, IgA, IgE, C1q, C3c, and C3d were found in epiretinal membranes, whereas numerous cells, including glial or pigmented epithelial cells, expressed HLA-DR and HLA-DQ antigens.

In specimens from two human retina biopsies, incubated for 4 hr or 6 hr with [3H]docosahexaenoic acid (110 nM), 80% of the esterified [3H]fatty acid was recovered in phospholipids and the remainder in triacylglycerols and diacylglycerols. The distribution of [3H]DHA in individual phospholipids (PL) was similar in both retinas, with phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) accounting for most of the label.

Among the Ab2, a mAb AB19-4 was characterized by both serologic and biologic methods to be paratope-specific (Ab2 beta), bearing the internal image of the neutralization site. AB19-4 was found to bind specifically to BAT123 and also to its mouse-human chimeric form in ELISA.

Highly purified A-LAK cells demonstrated greater activity against F98 tumor cells than conventional lymphokine-activated killer cells, as determined by means of 51Cr-release and clonogenic assays. Therapeutic efficacy was evaluated by means of a Winn neutralization assay, in which F98 targets and A-LAK cells or control nonadherent mononuclear cells were incubated for 18 h in vitro and then implanted stereotactically into the right caudate nuclei of Fischer rats.

Results show that community residence program structures play an important role in determining quality of life after deinstitutionalization. Clients living under program structures flowing from the Medicaid ICF/MR funding source were less active and involved in life than were clients living in programs funded by non-Medicaid state sources.

A rapid screening procedure based on the selective adsorption of deoxynivalenol (DON) from extracts of wheat and corn has been developed. DON is extracted from the sample with acetonitrile-water (85 + 15) and partially purified on a preparative minicolumn. Solvent is evaporated and the residue is dissolved in toluene-acetone (95 + 5) and chromatographed on a novel detector minicolumn which selectively adsorbs DON.
