The purpose of this study was to compare changes in circulating microRNAs -126 (c-miR-126) and -222 (c-miR-222) following acute serial concurrent exercise (SCE) and integrated concurrent exercise (ICE) sessions among young, sedentary adults. Ten males and 9 females completed the study procedures. For SCE, participants performed resistance exercise (RE) followed by aerobic exercise (AE), without mixing the two.

As trained educational and developmental psychologists who study the role of working memory in educational outcomes, we know the various assumptions made about definitions and measurements of this cognitive ability. Considering the popularity of the Baddeley and Hitch working memory model in these fields, we raise challenges related to measurement, overlap with executive function, and adopting working memory measurement approaches from adult models. To mitigate educational disruption, clinical practicums were pivoted to online delivery, despite knowledge gaps on the perspectives of nursing students and community liaisons on using virtual technology to facilitate clinical placements.

Objective: Accordingly, we explored the impact of using innovative virtual technology to combat the social distancing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' and community liaisons' experiences in a clinical community health nursing course.

Resolving the free energy landscapes that govern protein biophysics has been obscured by ensemble averaging. While the folding dynamics of single proteins have been observed using fluorescent labels and/or tethers, a simpler and more direct measurement of the conformational changes would not require modifications to the protein. We use nanoaperture optical tweezers to resolve the energy landscape of a single unmodified protein, Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), and quantify changes in the three-state conformation dynamics with temperature.

Optical scattering methods for the label-free analysis of single biomolecules.

Single-molecule techniques to analyze proteins and other biomolecules involving labels and tethers have allowed for new understanding of the underlying biophysics; however, the impact of perturbation from the labels and tethers has recently been shown to be significant in several cases. New approaches are emerging to measure single proteins through light scattering without the need for labels and ideally without tethers. Here, the approaches of interference scattering, plasmonic scattering, microcavity sensing, nanoaperture optical tweezing, and variants are described and compared.

The Neural Correlates of Spontaneous Beat Processing and Its Relationship with Music-Related Characteristics of the Individual.

In the presence of temporally organized stimuli, there is a tendency to entrain to the beat, even at the neurological level. Previous research has shown that when adults listen to rhythmic stimuli and are asked to imagine the beat, their neural responses are the same as when the beat is physically accented. The current study explores the neural processing of simple beat structures where the beat is physically accented or inferred from a previously presented physically accented beat structure in a passive listening context.

It is well established that skin lightness-darkness is associated with social outcomes, but little is known regarding the social salience of skin undertones (redness and yellowness). Our study addresses two related research questions on this topic: first, we ask whether red and yellow undertones are consistently perceived by observers; second, we ask whether red and yellow undertones are associated with expectations of discrimination across a range of social settings. We address these questions using novel survey data in which skin lightness-darkness and undertones are captured using CIELAB measurements and a two-dimensional categorical skin color scale.

We study the capacity fade rate of a flow battery utilizing 2,6-dihydroxyanthraquinone (DHAQ) and its dependence on hydroxide concentration, state of charge, cutoff voltages for the discharge step and for the electrochemical regeneration (oxidation of decomposition compounds back to active species) step, and the period of performing the electrochemical regeneration events. Our observations confirm that the first decomposition product, 2,6-dihydroxyanthrone (DHA), is stable, but after electro-oxidative dimerization, the anthrone dimer decomposes. We identify conditions for which there is little time after dimerization until the dimer is rapidly reoxidized electrochemically to form DHAQ.

Raman spectroscopy allows for material characterization of nanoparticles; however, probing individual nanoparticles requires an efficient way of isolating and enhancing the signal. Past works have used optical trapping with nanoapertures in metal films to measure the Raman spectra of individual nanoparticles; however, those works required custom laser tweezer systems that provided a transmission signal to verify trapping events as well as costly top-down nanofabrication.
