A self-assembled, charge-neutral dicopper(II) metallo-macrocycle with a near degenerate singlet-triplet ground state is a prototype molecular two-qubit system. The weakly-coupled spin centres delivered a long phase memory time of 5.4 μs, and each spin can be selectively switched using an applied potential providing a convenient means to modulate the quantum levels.

This study is about the struggle for legitimacy in place among a group of people often assumed to have neither. It examines the roll of informal placemaking and community building in struggles for settlement among people experiencing homelessness. It does so through ethnographic observation, photo-documentation, and participatory action research at three sites in Oakland, California, on which unhoused people (and some housed members of the surrounding community) have demonstrated bold forms of grassroots placemaking on public land.

Background: Preterm delivery and current nutrition strategies result in deficiencies of critical long-chain fatty acids (FAs) and lipophilic nutrients, increasing the risk of preterm morbidities. We sought to determine the efficacy of preventing postnatal deficits in FAs and lipophilic nutrients using an enteral concentrated lipid supplement in preterm piglets.
Methods: Preterm piglets were fed a baseline diet devoid of arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and randomized to enteral supplementation as follows: (1) Intralipid (IL), (2) complex lipid supplement 1 (CLS1) with an AA:DHA ratio of 0.

It is now well-established that Australia has a significant issue with methamphetamine. Recent dramatic changes in manufacturing have led to significant shifts in both the patterns of use and the relative purity of this illicit drug, with the crystalline form of methamphetamine commonly referred to as 'ice'. Excessive use not only impacts on those taking the drug, but also takes a heavy toll on their families.

Background/aims: To compare the sensitivity and specificity of 3DD and 2DD photography with stereo slide film in detecting glaucomatous optic nerve head features.
Methods: This prospective, multireader validation study imaged and compressed glaucomatous, suspicious or normal optic nerves using a ratio of 16:1 into 3DD and 2DD (1024×1280 pixels) and compared both to stereo slide film.
Trophoblast differentiation during early placental development is critical for successful pregnancy and aberrant differentiation causes preeclampsia and early pregnancy loss. During the first trimester, cytotrophoblasts are exposed to low oxygen tension (equivalent to~2%-3% O2) and differentiation proceeds along an extravillous pathway (giving rise to invasive extravillous cytotrophoblasts) and a villous pathway (giving rise to multinucleated syncytiotrophoblast). Interstitial extravillous cytotrophoblasts invade the decidua, while endovascular extravillous cytotrophoblasts are involved in re-modelling uterine spiral arteries.

Recently we have shown that the human placenta genome has a unique epigenetic pattern of large partially methylated domains (PMDs) and highly methylated domains (HMDs) with gene body DNA methylation positively correlating with level of gene expression. In order to determine the evolutionary conservation of DNA methylation patterns and transcriptional regulatory programs in the placenta, we performed a genome-wide methylome (MethylC-seq) analysis of human, rhesus macaque, squirrel monkey, mouse, dog, horse, and cow placentas as well as opossum extraembryonic membrane.

Background: The success rate of trabeculectomy remains low in cases of refractory glaucoma even with the use of antifibrotics. Glaucoma drainage devices have proven to be more efficacious in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) in these glaucomas.
Microcystin-LR is a cyanobacterial toxin found in surface and recreational waters that inhibits protein phosphatases and may disrupt the cytoskeleton. Microcystins induce apoptosis in hepatocytes at ≤ 2.0 µM.

In the present studies we found that MUC1 is expressed by normal human neonatal and adult skin fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are usually considered negative for MUC1 expression.

The MUC1 cytoplasmic subunit (MUC1-C) can translocate to the nucleus and regulate gene expression. It is frequently assumed that the MUC1 extracellular subunit (MUC1-N) does not enter the nucleus.

Classically, this condition is attributed to a traumatic event and is thought to inevitably lead to the development of degenerative arthritis. Bilateral findings should thus be infrequent.

How mechanical stimuli are transmitted from the endothelial luminal surface to the nucleus is incompletely understood. The linker of nucleus and cytoskeleton (LINC) complexes have been proposed as part of a continuous physical link between the plasma membrane and subnuclear structures.

In hemochorial placentation, these cells play especially important roles, interfacing with and modifying the cells of the maternal decidua. Within the rapidly growing placenta, it has been shown that there are trophoblast stem cells well characterized in the mouse and postulated but not well understood in primates.

Method: of study Uterine microvascular endothelial cells and trophoblasts were co-cultured in a parallel plate chamber under shear stress (15 dyn/cm(2)) conditions. The distribution and expression of endothelial intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) was quantified by immunofluorescence image analysis and flow cytometry.
Although trophoblast stem cells can be obtained directly from blastocyst outgrowths in the mouse, this has never been described in primates. In human and non-human primates, trophoblast cells have been obtained from embryonic stem (ES) cells or embryoid bodies (EBs). The results reported here show for the first time that cells with the characteristics of trophoblast stem cells can be derived directly from rhesus monkey blastocyst outgrowths.

In this paper we show that macaque trophoblasts express the mucin, MUC1, and that it is involved in trophoblast-endothelial interaction. Immunocytochemistry, Western blotting and RT-PCR analyses confirmed that MUC1 was expressed by isolated early gestation macaque trophoblasts.

In this study, we used whole-cell patch clamp recordings to characterize the flow-activated Cl(-) current in bovine aortic ECs (BAECs). Application of shear stress induced rapid development of a Cl(-) current that was effectively blocked by the Cl(-) channel antagonist 5-nitro-2-(3-phenopropylamino)benzoic acid (100 microM).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTrophoblast migration within the endometrium and uterine vasculature is essential for normal placental and fetal development. We previously demonstrated that macaque trophoblasts express the chemokine receptor CCR5 and that this receptor mediates trophoblast migration toward RANTES (regulated upon activation normal T-cell expressed and secreted). In the present paper we have used primary cultures of early gestation macaque trophoblasts to test the hypothesis that tobacco smoke inhibits trophoblast migration as the result of dysregulation of the RANTES/CCR5 chemotactic axis.

Obvious radiographic scapholunate dissociation seen on plain radiographs may seem to establish the diagnosis in a patient who presents with wrist pain. This diagnosis, however, is based on the assumption that scapholunate dissociation is caused only by trauma. In questioning this assumption, we present 6 cases of obvious radiographic scapholunate dissociation with similar radiographic findings in both wrists.

Sustained epithelial cell hyperplasia and squamous metaplasia are considered as preneoplastic lesions during the formation of lung cancer. Initial studies of in vitro-fertilized oocytes cultured with buffalo rat liver cells suggested that other epithelial cells might be used to assess blastocyst adherence and penetration in vitro.
Methods: Macaque blastocysts were incubated with different epithelial cell lines or with Matrigel.
