This retrospective study of 31 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus during 38 pregnancies shows a spontaneous or missed abortion rate of 7.9%, elective abortion rate of 10.5%, and a perinatal mortality rate of 12.

The anaerobic and aerobic flora of the vagina was identified in 79 postmenopausal women, 33 of whom received estrogen replacement. Four anaerobic species were more prevalent among estrogen-treated women than among untreated women, whereas 2 anaerobic species were less prevalent in the treated group. The types of organisms isolated from both groups are similar and all organisms isolated were considered usual inhabitants of the genital tract.

This review describes the changes in the causes of maternal deaths in a major referral hospital over a span of 55 years. There has been a significant decline in direct maternal deaths from infection, hemorrhage, and toxemia. Continued vigilance is needed since 58% of direct obstetric deaths in our hospital during the last 30 years were considered to have been preventable.

The roles of complement levels and CFI activity in the regulation of chemotactic factor generation were evaluated in newborn and adult plasmas. Plasma samples were obtained from 19 healthy adults, 19 neonates, and 12 3-day-old infants. CFI levels were determined in all samples, chemotactic activity in 15 of the 19 adult and newborn samples, and complement levels in 10 of these 15.

The hypercholesterolemia which accompanies the normal human pregnancy is not known to be influenced by diet or other factors. The present experiment in fourteen pregnant women was designed to document this phenomenon under controlled metabolic conditions and to study the effect of dietary cholesterol upon this usual increase in serum cholesterol. The subjects included twelve normal subjects, one juvenile diabetic, and one type II familial hypercholesterolemic subject.

Comparison of species of bacteria isolated from patients with endometritis with species isolated from normal pregnant and nonpregnant women suggests that bacteria causing infections are indigenous to the genital tract. However, complete studies of the flora of pregnant women, especially anaerobic flora, are lacking. Aerobic and anaerobic cultures of the endocervix were obtained from women in all trimesters of pregnancy and at three days and six weeks post partum.
