Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare clinical and radiological outcomes of monoplanar and biplanar medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomies, hypothesizing no significant differences between the two techniques using a triangular allograft impaction method.
  • A total of 103 patients were analyzed retrospectively, with significant improvements in pain and functional scores for both groups from baseline to 1 year post-surgery, but no notable differences in most radiological outcomes.
  • Although the monoplanar group had more Takeuchi fractures, this did not lead to additional complications or the need for extra fixation, indicating that the triangular allograft technique supports stability and healing for both surgical methods.

Although microplastic pollution jeopardizes both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, the movement of plastic particles through terrestrial environments is still poorly understood. Agricultural soils exposed to different managements are important sites of storage and dispersal of microplastics. This study aimed to identify the abundance, distribution, and type of microplastics present in agricultural soils, water, airborne dust, and ditch sediments.

Time-relaxed sports timetables use more time slots than strictly needed, and are particularly popular in amateur (indoor) leagues. However, due to unexpected events, a considerable number of games may not be played as initially planned before the start of the tournament, leading to a potentially very different realized timetable. This study focuses on dealing with these uncertain events in time-relaxed round-robin sports timetabling, and how to mitigate their effect on the quality of the timetable.

Current farm systems rely on the use of Plant Protection Products (PPP) to secure high productivity and control threats to the quality of the crops. However, PPP use may have considerable impacts on human health and the environment. A study protocol is presented aiming to determine the occurrence and levels of PPP residues in plants (crops), animals (livestock), humans and other non-target species (ecosystem representatives) for exposure modelling and impact assessment.

In various sports large amounts of data are nowadays collected and analyzed to help scouts with identifying talented young athletes. In contrast, the literature on result-based talent identification in road cycling is remarkably scarce. The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the possibilities of the use of publicly available data to discover new talented Under-23 (U23) riders via statistical learning methods (linear regression and random forest techniques).

The concentration, in urban street sediment, of 13 chemical elements was measured in the city of Leuven, Belgium. A total of 77 locations were sampled in pedestrian zones, streets with limited traffic, streets with much traffic, and on the ring road that has very busy traffic. The data were compared to NO concentrations measured by the CurieuzeNeuzen-Vlaanderen project, a large-scale study with 20,000 sampling points all over Flanders (the northern part of Belgium).

Recent developments in generating gametes via in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and their successful use for reproductive purposes in animals strongly suggest that soon these methods could also be used in human reproduction. At least two questions emerge in this context: (a) if a legislator should permit their use and (b) if ethical claims emerge that support their provision, e.g.

Over the past few decades, studies on the red blood cell (RBC) membrane gave rise to increasingly sophisticated although divergent models of its structural organization, since investigations were often performed in denaturing conditions using detergents. To access soluble isolated RBC membrane complexes with the preservation of their interactions and conformations, we decided to apply the recent SMALP (Styrene Maleic Acid Lipid Particles) technology to RBC ghosts. Depending on the ionic strength of buffers in which ghost membranes were resuspended, the isolated proteins within SMALPs could differ on Coomassie-stained gels, but with few changes when compared to ghost membrane SDS lysates.

There is a paucity of literature describing potential issues related to lateral hand dominance in general and cardiac surgery. Nonetheless, during surgical training left-handedness can produce difficulties in the operating room that are not always understood or accepted by supervising right-handed surgeons. These problems can be easily overcome by practice and anticipation.

This paper on the biological tests carried out on serum/plasma samples from donors of human body material (HBM) is the result of a project of the working Group of Superior Health Council of Belgium formed with experts in the field of HBM and infectious serology. Indeed, uncertainty about the interpretation of biological test results currently leads to the sometimes unjustified cancelling of planned donations or the rejection of harvested HBM, whilst more sophisticated diagnostic algorithms would still allow the use of organs or HBM that would otherwise have been rejected. NAT tests will not be discussed in this publication.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses the health effects of natural dust containing heavy metals from the Nellis Dunes Recreation Area in Las Vegas, focusing on three types of geologic dust commonly disturbed by off-road activities.
  • Adult female mice were exposed to varying doses of these dusts, which contained harmful metals like arsenic and lead, leading to significant immune system suppression, particularly a marked decrease in IgM antibody responses.
  • The lowest adverse effect levels (LOAEL) identified were 0.01 mg/kg for two dust types (CBN 5 and CBN 6) and 0.1 mg/kg for CBN 7, raising public health concerns due to the high number of visitors to the area.

The specific health effects of direct inhalation of fine minerogenic dusts generated by natural soil surfaces remain poorly known and relatively little researched. To learn more about this exposure and its contribution to human health effects, we surveyed surface sediment and characterized dust from the Nellis Dunes Recreation Area (NDRA) in Clark County, Nevada, a popular off-road vehicle (ORV) recreational site. Dry drainage systems at NDRA are commonly used as natural trail systems for ORV recreation; these surfaces also are characterized by high concentrations of heavy metals.

Desert areas are usually characterized by a continuous deposition of fine airborne particles. Over time, this process results in the accumulation of silt and clay on desert surfaces. We evaluated health effects associated with regional atmospheric dust, or geogenic dust, deposited on surfaces in the Nellis Dunes Recreation Area (NDRA) in Clark County, Nevada, a popular off-road vehicle (ORV) recreational site frequented daily by riders, families, and day campers.

Published diffuse X-ray scattering from the high- superconductor HgBaCuO has been reexamined with a view to developing a model that more satisfactorily accounts for the observed patterns. The present work agrees with the previous conclusion that the doping oxygen atoms form long and isolated interstitial chains that run in both tetragonal directions. However, a distinctly different model is proposed for the accompanying displacement patterns of the atoms surrounding these linear defects.
